The Plymouth Brethren
The following page includes three papers written by Miles J. Stanford on the subject of the Plymouth Brethren (PBs)both the Open and Closed varieties. The Plymouth Brethren (often known throughout the world as Assemblies or Gospel Halls) are a small groups of Christians with a deep and rich history. The PBs should not be confused with any "Brethren" out of the Continental Free Church tradition, (such as the Church of the Brethren, Brethren Church, etc.), nor the Arminian Pentecostal Assemblies of God. For decades, the PBs reached out with their various needs to brother Miles Stanford by telephone and letter, yet often in pride and denial that they could be helped or ministered to by someone "outside" their Assembly system. However, it is often only an outsider who is in a position to evaluated conditions as they truly are, rather than how insiders represent them to be. Miles' burden was always that the PBs would discover the rich legacy of Pauline Dispensationalism established by the original founders of the movement. The green titles above and below are links to specific articles.

Exclusive Brethren ~ Anti-gay secretive religious sect A secret group has been mailing literture condemning same-sex marriage to tens of thousands of Canadian households. The material has a post office box for a return address at a 711 store in Toronto.
The material came to light recently when Liberal MP Mark Holland complained in the House of Commons in March. Residents in his riding had received the mailout. Very little is known of the group. The Vancouver Sun has discovered more about the group in an article it published today.

Top marks for sect schools that shun the modern world
    By Tony Halpin, Education Editor
A SECRETIVE religious sect that bans children from using computers or reading fiction has won praise from Ofsted for the quality of education provided by its schools. NI_MPU('middle'); Television, radio, mobile telephones, newspapers and going to places of entertainment are all banned. Computers and the internet are regarded as tools of the Devil. A spokesman for the trust said it hoped to have all of them registered by the summer. He said that the schools observed the same rules as the Brethren on the use of computers and modern technology. Most of the schools, which cater for pupils aged 11 to 17, had operated previously as tuition centres for children who were otherwise taught at home. They rely on fees from parents or donations from the Exclusive Brethren. Pupils are entered for GCSE and vocational qualifications. SEPARATE LIVES

OTTAWA A secretive religious sect is behind an aggressive but anonymous direct-mail and advertising campaign against gay marriage that has triggered complaints in Parliament and in the media from MPs and ordinary Canadians from B.C. to Atlantic Canada, The Vancouver Sun has learned.
    Posted Saturday, July 16, 2005
"To have anonymous money being spent in this way from a post office box in a 7-11 in Toronto is absolutely unacceptable," Ontario Liberal MP Mark Holland complained in the House of Commons in March. Some members of the ultra-conservative Exclusive Brethren, who shun relationships with non-members and require their women to wear head scarves in public, organized and funded the campaign, a sect member confirmed Thursday. The campaign's sponsors identify themselves in the provocative ads and mail-outs only as "concerned Canadian parents," or CCP, with a post office box address located in a Toronto convenience store.

An exclusive right is the power, granted by the state to person s to prevent ("exclude") all others from taking certain actions. Exclusive rights are found in property law intellectual property law, and public utilities . Many scholars argue that they form the basis for the institution of private property In ordinary property law, exclusive rights (such as the right to prevent others from entering or using land, or the right to prevent others from taking an object) have often been the codification of pre-existing social norm s with regard to land or chattel s. Although some scholars (particularly in continental Europe ) argue that exclusive "intellectual property" rights, such as those attached to s or patent s, are the codification of some kind of moral right natural right or personality right , they can only be consistently justified through instrumentalism In the philosophy of science, instrumentalism is the view that concepts and theories are merely useful instruments whose worth is measured not by whether the concepts and theories are true or false (or correctly depict reality), but how effective they are

THE OTHER SIDE OF NZ HISTORY Christianity Modernity and Culture, edited by John Stenhouse, assisted by G A Wood. Until the 1980s, most NZ historians, like their overseas counterparts, took it for granted that secularization would wax as religion waned. But the reality has been different, even in New Zealand, where secularity remains a strong, but more embattled force. In this broadranging book, a number of contributors look at different aspects of NZ's history and culture and religion, providing almost a dozen excellent essays. Colonialism and cross-culture impacts; Wiremu Tamihana and mana; women in both mission situations and amongst the working class; popular religion amongst the colonists; the effects of Calvinism on settlement; the contrasts and conflicts of church and state; God and George Grey; ecumenism, and the church's voice in society. Contributors include Allan Davidson, Peter Lineham, Lindsay Head, Alison Clarke, Susannah Grant. Australian Theological Forum 2005 - 348 pp - $44.95
