  • From 1960 JTJr consolidated power by surrounding himself with bright young men from the English-speaking world, and introduced an increasingly "hard line" of teaching. EB meetings ceased to be old men raking over their biblical knowledge, and took on a more gladiatorial atmosphere. Young people found this much more interesting. JTJr's teachings took people away from the comfort and laxity of post-WW2 society by banning membership of associations, banning eating with non-members, and eventually separating families into members and non-members who could not even speak to each other ever again. The JTJr era resulted in a huge increase in alcohol (especially Scotch whisky) consumption among EB. Twentieth century inventions that were encouraged rather than proscribed were: good cars, travel by jet aeroplanes and international telephones.

The early vision was to throw off, as they saw it, the trappings of 'religion' and meet without ordained ministers and carefully orchestrated meetings. Every man was encouraged to take part and the meetings were in simple places. There were no musical instruments and the breaking of bread was a simple but meaningful act.

The Exclusive Brethren
Within the U.K. most Brethren churches are 'Open Brethren'. There is, however, another, separate group, known as the 'Exclusive Brethren'. In the early days of the 'Plymouth Brethren' movement, the movement divided, because a member who had been excommunicated from one fellowship, was allowed to take communion in another. Those who believed this was unacceptable followed the lead of J N Darby and became known as 'Darbyites', and later as 'Exclusive Brethren'. The Exclusive Brethren meeting rooms have no windows. In most of their main beliefs, Exclusive Brethren are the same as other Christians. However, their emphasis on the verse 'Let every one who names the name of the Lord withdraw from iniquity' ( The Bible, 2 Timothy chapter 2 verse 19 ) has led them to live their lives as separately as possible. They believe everyone who does not follow their beliefs to be iniquitous, and therefore to be avoided as far as possible, and especially to be excluded from 'Breaking Bread' (Communion). These quotes are from the 'Darby' translation of the Bible, which they invariably use. This chart lists some of the differences between 'Exclusive' and 'Open' Brethren.

I returned from Burning Man yesterday with a glazed look in my eye and a bewildered smile on my face, immediately sliding between the sheets to begin collecting the many hours of sleep misplaced and misspent out on the playa. I'm home. I had a fantastic trip. And now, I'm mentally, emotionally and physically exhausted. Consequently Queer Day will be out of commission for awhile to give me a chance to truly recoup and regroup. My apologies for the delay. Things will return to their usual state here soon.
Timing Is Everything. It's Time To Burn.
They say that breaking up is hard to do, and tonight I was very well reminded of that fact during my evening spent talking and crying and talking and crying - live from the window table at Sweet Inspirations on Market Street. Not my most glamorous moment on display, but it's great to be at a place in my life where I know how I feel and I'm not afraid to show and share it. Nevertheless, a man in love alone does not a lasting relationship make. I cried all the way home, and, dear heart, if I may be frank, I could really care less about gay celebrity gossip and transsexuals on television right now. I'm off, off of Queer Day for the weekend, off all of next week as well. I'm off for Burning Man and the lovely and talented Nancy will be holding down the fort next week - so tune on in and her some love, allright? And for those of you who will be adventuring in Black Rock City as well, come find me and say hello. I'll be within the Avalon Synapse Station at 7:30 and Catharsis, more specifically as a part of the

How many other groups out there fall into the "cult" class is debatable and not likely to be debated. Official cultdom continues to be accepted in many aspects of life and law in Canada with and without the secret handshakes.
Just who are these people. The group is responsible for the mailing of tens of thousands of pieces of anti-gay marriage literature in communities across Canada recently. The material did not identify the Exclusive Brethren as the source, only as Concerned Canadian Parents.
The Vancouver Sun identified the group in an article published today after they discovered the group had placed a full page ad in the Hill Times telling senators same-sex marriage was wrong. The Senate has just wrapped up the committee stage on the Civil Marriage Act and is expected to pass the bill on Monday. The Act will likely receive Royal Assent later Monday or Tuesday, July 19.

Christian Brethren
A conservative, fundamentalist Christian movement. The Plymouth Brethren is a widely used, but unofficial, designation for a loose grouping of churches with early nineteenth-centry roots in the British Isles. Within these churches, the common terminology is simply "Brethren" or "Christian Brethren," but they are to be distinguished from Brethren churches associated with the Pietist movement [...]. Similar to the Restorationist bodies in the U.S., the early Brethren envisioned a basis for Christian unity by forsaking

EXCLUSIVE BRETHREN LEADER DEAD In our March/April 1996 TACL we reported, in good faith - based on a number of different reports, the death of John Hales , the world leader of the Exclusive Brethren We were rather premature on that occasion, and published an acknowledgment of our error in the May/June issue of TACL that year. In spite of serious ill-health at the time, John Hales rallied and managed to live quite a deal longer than apparent expectations. His son also had to wait a bit longer to take over as the ‘Elect Vessel’ This time we haven’t made a mistake! John Stephen Hales JSH ), considered the ‘Elect Vessel’, the ‘universal leader’, the ‘Man of God’, ‘the embodiment of the Holy Spirit’ of the Taylorite Exclusive Brethren, died in Sydney, New South Wales (Australia), early on Saturday evening, the 12th of January, 2002. He was buried on Tuesday, the 15th of January. His wife, Helen Dietrich, died about a month earlier. Three Hales’ sons and one daughter survive their parents. One son

http://www.ccgm.org.au/Articles/ARTICLE-0106.htm
Exclusive Brethren Settle Out of Court The thinking and actions of some religious groups and their leaders can often be difficult to fathom. The Exclusive Brethren and the dictates and actions of its leadership can be particularly peculiar and hard to follow. In October 1990 our Director met with two Western Australian leaders who wanted to discuss what they regarded as unfair comments about their movement in an article we had published in TACL of June 1990. They were nice men and polite in their dealings with the director (though later correspondence became more abrupt). They had itemised our article in writing and provided their corrective comments next to each item they were concerned about. However, as these were discussed one by one, it turned out that almost every time something was declared to be untrue, it was more a matter of splitting hairs over word meanings. It was more a ‘word game’ than factual corrections of incorrect statements on our part. For example, we had reported that one person had been disciplined for having a dinghy. That was claimed to be untrue. He had been disciplined for disobeying counsel from others who had advised against having a recreational fishing boat – because this was not wise, it would lead to unwise use of God’s time (not to be used for pleasure or recreational activities) and would lead to unacceptably playing sport with God’s creatures.

Posting on peebs.net site Written out of concern for those who leave the Exclusive Brethren movement and seem to flounder without any direction in their lives. The following are just a few simple thoughts of encouragement to those who have left 'the brethren'. Whatever reason you have for leaving the brethren, be assured that act of leaving them cannot be wrong. Maybe your reasons might be wrong ones, but even then it would be a case of 'doing the right things for the wrong reasons'. So cheer up!! You may not mean you are saved. The inverse applies too. Just because you have left the brethren does not What they (and you) have been exposed to is a stereotyped message which, while including certain elements of the true gospel, has so confused these with the repetitious preaching of sectarianism and man-pleasing, that many younger people "shut down" and stop listening. This effectively 'hardens' them against any future appeals of the gospel. Be aware of this danger.

Welcome to this site and thankyou for visiting. Here we take a close look at some of the issues relating to the Exclusive Brethren movement. For more details, look at the 'Explanation of Site' page.
The main purpose of this site is to reach those who are members of the religious group commonly called Exclusive Brethren. We have no desire to belittle or defame members of this group. We do love them sincerely. But the organisation which enslaves them must be separated in our minds from the people who form part of it. Therefore we do all within our power to expose the system for what it really is and by so doing, hopefully enlighten the people within it. I am not an author or a writer. My formal education was minimal and I dare say that this will be obvious. I can only ask my readers to be tolerant. I would appreciate an e-mail informing me of any mistakes, omissions etc.

II Timothy 2: 19 "Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, the Lord knoweth them that are his. And, let everyone that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity." It turns out that as much as a third of the anonymous anti-gay mail barrage Canadian MPs were subject to in the run up to recognizing same-sex marriage is thanks to a single, secretive Christian sect, the Exclusive Brethren The Exclusive Brethren are an Evangelical Protestant Christian church related to the Christian or Open Brethren. Members follow a rigid code of conduct based very strictly on Bible teaching, which provides a firm moral framework and is focussed on a strong family unit.
They keep themselves separate from other people (including other Christians) as far as possible, because they believe the world is a place of wickedness. They regard 'exclusiveness' as the only way to keep away from evil. Writing as a fringe member of a not terribly secretive, but small and fervent, Christian sect I have to say I find all the secrecy and exclusivity most appealing. That said, their ideas about gay marriage are wrong on two counts: first, they are wrong about gay marriage, and; second, there is no point is being an
