Christianity Subdivisions Page 1 of 5 Printable version of this page The Exclusive Brethren Introduction The Exclusive Brethren are an Evangelical Protestant Christian church related to the Christian or Open Brethren. Members follow a rigid code of conduct based very strictly on Bible teaching, which provides a firm moral framework and is focussed on a strong family unit. They keep themselves separate from other people (including other Christians) as far as possible, because they believe the world is a place of wickedness. They regard 'exclusiveness' as the only way to keep away from evil. The main group of Exclusive Brethren are called 'Taylorites' after James Taylor Senior and Junior who led the church for much of the twentieth century. This group is secretive so most of the information available about them comes from people who have left it. As a result the Exclusive Brethren often gets a bad press and is referred to using phrases like "an exclusive and secret religious sect" or "a secretive church".

Christianity ... Help Like this page? Send it to a friend! Christianity Subdivisions Page 5 of 5 Printable version of this page Criticisms of separation The harshness of separation has been heavily criticised in the press and by former members of the Exclusive Brethren. They say that the Exclusive Brethren's rigid laws destroy marriages, split families and damage the lives of members who try to leave. Since a members' whole existence has been focused on the church they have to rebuild their lives completely if they leave or are expelled. It can be a very lonely experience. "It was a known thing ever since you were a child that if you ever left you'd go to hell - you'd burn in hell for ever; and that you'd never be able to speak to any of your family or anyone that you'd ever known through childhood in the Brethren ever again. That you'd just be ignored...like you didn't exist" ex-Brethren woman Families often put great pressure on leavers to return to the Brethren, which can add to the trauma of separation. Other pressure can include job loss and having to leave the family home.

We do not think either of the above sites do this.

Exclusive Brethren (1/2)
Often referred to mistakenly as 'Plymouth Brethren', the Exclusive Brethren is in fact an extremist offshoot of the former. Founded in 1825 by a clergyman dissenter called John Nelson Derby, the Plymouth Brethren always had strongly predeterminist views - it was the duty of God's chosen to avoid all contact with the ungodly. Friendship, business or even eating with those outside the Brethren was forbidden. The founders of Exclusive Brethren believed that this isolationism should not be compromised in any way - today's members are not allowed television, radio, newspapers, fax machines or computers. They do not vote, join unions, take civil office or allow their children to take part in sports or social activities at school. Men wear jacket and tie; women must have long hair, modest clothes and no make-up. Sunday worship begins at 6am in Brethren Meeting Rooms (which have blocked-out windows) and goes on all day.

There are shorter meetings each night of the week. The cultic elements of the movement are those of isolationism rather than recruitment. Members are not allowed to communicate with relatives who have left the movement. There are estimated to be 10,000 members of the Exclusive Brethren in the UK. The movement has enjoyed a string of strong leaders and is currently under the command of an Australian called John Hales.

Exclusive Brethren
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Until about 1960, the people now referred to as the Exclusive Brethren EB , or sometimes the Closed Brethren , were a quiet, conservative, fundamentalist, Christian group who desired to remain spiritually separate from the world surrounding them, and also the divisions and confusion they perceived in Christendom. They did not support 'clericalism', the making of a distinction between those who teach or lead and those who serve other functions within the church, but recognised John Nelson Darby J B Stoney F E Raven C A Coates , James Taylor and others as gifted of God to help "recover the truth" as to Christ and His Assembly (Church). The EB never used the name "Exclusive" for themselves, but it derived from their strict interpretation of the rules of membership of their "assemblies". EB believe that a person who has been excluded from Christian fellowship at one of their branches is excluded from all others. The word "exclusive" was a way to distinguish between those meetings which had separated over the Bethesda division of 1848, where the Plymouth Brethren became divided into two camps, one known as
