by Fr. John A. Hardon, S.J. Felix Adler came to the United States from Germany as a child. He studied at Columbia University and after graduation became a teacher of Oriental literature at Cornell University. His religious background was Jewish; in fact, he was to have succeeded his father as rabbi of Temple Emanuel in New York City. Formative Factors. Basic Principles . Ethical culture emphasizes the fact that individual opinions on such questions as the existence of God or the immortality of the soul are of secondary importance. Membership in Ethical Societies, therefore, does not depend on acceptance of a creed. Theists, deists, and atheists are equally welcome. Since Adler himself and many ethical culture leaders came from Reform Judaism, the movement has sometimes been mistakenly identified with extreme liberal Judaism. According to the Culturists, the character of every person contains contrary elements. The two kinds of qualities may be called the fair and the foul, or more simply the plus and minus traits. Plus qualities exist in the worst characters and minus traits can be found even in people who are most respected.

Print friendly format The Distinctiveness of Ethical Culture Platform Address by Don Johnson, Leader Delivered on August 22, 2004 READINGS America shall introduce a pure religion. There will be a new church, founded on moral science; at first cold and naked, a babe in a manger again, the algebra and mathematics of ethical law, the church of those to come, without shawls or psaltery or sackbut; but it will have heaven and earth for its beams and rafters, science for symbol and illustration; it will fast enough gather beauty, music, picture, poetry. Ralph Waldo Emerson, 1838 The crying need was for a religious organization that should be above all else active in social, political, educational and moral reform. Thus the ethical movement had its genesis. Yet, mark you, it did not represent an attempt to find a substitute for religion in philanthropic activities and moral education. On the contrary, it started with the hope of finding a

LA LECHE LEAGUE HONORED BY NY ETHICAL CULTURE SOCIETY
Marian Tompson, a co-founder of La Leche League International, will be honored for her "courageous, pioneering, lifelong work on behalf of children and mothers" by The New York Society For Ethical Culture on Tuesday, May 18. Mrs. Tompson will receive the Ethical Humanist Award, presented annually by the Society, at the organization's headquarters [2 W. 64th Street at Central Park West in Manhattan] at 7 p.m. The public is invited. The award honors those who have "acted with extraordinary moral courage, without regard for the sanction or acclaim of peers or of society, and whose actions have had broad humanizing implications." Marian Leonard Tompson, the mother of seven children, began her pioneering work in 1950 after the birth of her first child, at a time when there was not a great deal of information available about breast feeding. Through her research and work, La Leche League was founded and now has 3,000 chapters world wide. La Leche League Groups receive 200,000 queries a month with questions and concerns about breast feeding.

THE ETHICAL CULTURE SCHOOL
By Rosalind Singer , Reply by Jeremy Bernstein
In response to Creators of the Bomb May 11, 2000 To the Editors In his review of In the Shadow of the Bomb: Oppenheimer, Bethe, and the Moral Responsibility of the Scientist , by S.S. Schweber [ NYR , May 11, 2000], Jeremy Bernstein states: "Oppenheimer...was educated at the Ethical Culture School in New York. This leads Schweber to devote several pages to a somewhat tedious digression into the ideas of Felix Adler, who founded the school. What any of this had to do with Oppenheimer is not entirely clear." I have not read Schweber's book, but as a graduate of the Ethical Culture Schools, I can tell the reviewer that the philosophy of Dr. Felix Adler had an enormous impact on all of us. For these reasons it seems to me that Bernstein's comment "What any of this had to do with Oppenheimer is not en-tirely clear" is incomprehensible. Although I could not understand much of the physics that Oppenheimer spoke about, I, along with many of my fellow alumni from Ethical, could very well understand most of his social and ethical comments. We all drank from the same philosophical fount. Rosalind Singer

Reform Judaism

Definition:
The movement of Ethical Culture Societies was started by Professor Felix Adler (1851-1933) in New York City on May 15, 1876. Membership in such groups is open to anyone who accepts the basic doctrine that the principle aim in life is to lead an ethical life. Other opinions regarding the existence of gods, where one should stand on particular moral questions (like abortion), etc. are not important. Some argue that, with Ethical Culture, Adler was taking Reform Judaism one step further. Adler had studied to become a rabbi, but his research into biblical criticism had lead him to the conclusion that most of what was contained in traditional religion simply wasn't true - thus leading him to reject the life of a religious leader. In his autobiography Adler wrote: Was I to lie in order to teach the truth? ...Was I to repeat these words? It was impossible. It was certain they would stick in my throat. On these grounds the separation was decided by me.
