61. Scottish Enlightenment
The Scottish enlightenment stretched roughly from 1740 to 1790. The Scottishenlightenment came to an end in the early 1800s, due largely to the rise

The Scottish Enlightenment
Scotland's connection to England began officially in 1603, when King James VI of Scotland inherited the English crown and became also King James I of England. The kingdoms were still theoretically distinct, both crowns just happened to sit on the same head. This remained the case until the 1707 Act of Union , which united the kingdoms of England and Scotland forever. Before 1707, there had been surprisingly little contact or even less good feeling between the two nations. All Scotsmen were either Presbyterians or Jacobites, and that alone was enough to alienate them from four-fifths of the English population. Few Scotsmen traveled south and even fewer Englishmen traveled north. Scotland's traditional ally, France, was England's traditional enemy. Scottish scholars and clergymen looked to the universities and seminaries of Continental Europe, rather than England, to further their educations and garner intellectual inspiration. The internal structure of Scotland looked nothing like England. The Edinburgh parliament was an incredibly corrupt and unrepresentative institution dominated by "gangs" of noblemen. The interlocking system of assemblies of elders of the inquisitorial Presbyterian Kirk of Scotland served as the only real local government Scotland had. Scottish agriculture was semi-feudal and unproductive, run via the "run-rig" system in unenclosed fields with peculiarly short tenancies. On the upside, compared to their English counterparts, the Scottish lords were decidedly more paternalistic and their lifestyle and culture much closer to that of their tenants which did wonders for social relations. And then, of course, there were the mysterious and impenetrable Highlands, run by the "barbarous" Clans, whose social, cultural, political and economic structures were a thousand years older than anything else in Britain.

The Enlightenment was a movement of thinkers who believed that science could explain everything in nature. Until then, most people believed that god controlled the universe in a "metaphysical" manner. Metaphysical means "beyond physical," and suggests that it is impossible for humans to comprehend things that happen in our environment.
Galileo was one of the first thinkers of the Enlightenment. Galileo used a powerful telescope to discover that many moons surrounded Jupiter. He used his discoveries to prove the Copernicus' theory that the earth traveled around the sun. The church was opposed to Galileo's discovery. Galileo was imprisoned for heresy and printers were forbidden to print and of Galileo's writings. His students continued to discuss his teachings and in time, the ideas of using observations and measurement were to become the root of modern science. The thinkers of the Enlightenment encouraged people to use science to explore nature and to question what they had always accepted without questioning. The Enlightenment encouraged people to participate in government and to rethink old ideas like feudalism and primogeniture. The American Revolution was seen by many as a huge achievement for the Enlightenment. Two hundred years ago, our Constitution provided for a government where nobody was above the law. People had freedoms of speech and religion, and the press would be allowed to print any true statement.

69. French Deism [Internet Encyclopedia Of Philosophy]
Brief historical survey of the development of Deism in the French enlightenment. From the Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy.
http://www.utm.edu/research/iep/d/deismfre.htm
French Deism With other English influences Deism entered France, where, however, only its materialistic and revolutionary phases were seized upon, to the exclusion of that religiosity which had never been lost in England. French Deism stood outside of theology. The English writers who came to exercise the greatest influence were Hobbes, Locke, Shaftesbury, Pope, Bolingbroke, and Hume. Of the true Deists only Collins, the most critical and the least theological, became prominent.

Voltaire Voltaire (d. 1778) embraced the conception of natural religion with ardor, and entered into a polemics against intolerance in Church and State relations as well as against the philosophy of the Church and the prevailing religious Cartesianism ( Essai sur les mmurs et l'esprit des nations ; Dictionnaire philosophique , 1764). He derived his natural philosophy from Newton and Clarke, his theory of knowledge and his ideas on toleration from Locke, the main principles of his ethics from Shaftesbury, his critical method and the conception of natural religion from the Deists. All phenomena are explained historically by the interaction between man and his environment, and all things are governed by God acting only in accordance with natural laws. Natural morality and religion are not entirely innate ideas, but rather simple and universally prevalent conditions standing in need of development and following a course that leads through errors arising from ignorance and fear to an ultimate standard truth which is characterized as the "fruit of the cultivated reason." Deism is thereby emptied of all religious content and restricted to the field of morals and rational metaphysics.
