Disciples of Christ
Introduction Churches of Christ
I. Group Profile
  • Name: The Christian Church/Disciples of Christ and the Christian Church (Churches of Christ)
  • Founder: Barton W. Stone, died in 1844.
  • Date of Birth:
  • Birth Place: Port Tobacco, Maryland
  • Year Founded:
  • Brief History: Barton W. Stone began preaching in 1801 in Kentucky during the start of the Second Great Awakening. During this time Stone took part in the Cane Ridge Revival and became burdened with the desire for Christian unity. By participating in this charismatic revival, he was violating the Presbyterian doctrine. Thus, around 1804, he and several others, decided to leave their organized religion, and on June twenty-eighth wrote The Last Will and Testament of the Springfield Presbytery. (Tyler, 1894: 26) Their hopes, like those of Alexander Campbell , were to form a primitive church that was united as one body. In 1832, the Stoneites joined Campbell’s group, forming the Stone-Campbell Movement, but less than two decades later there was conflict within the sect. In 1906, the groups split; Stone’s followers became officially known as the Christian Church, or Disciples of Christ while Campbell’s group became known as the Churches of Christ (non-instrumental).

    http://www.community-christian.org/flwright.htm
Main About Us Weddings What We Offer ... Tour Information In April, 1940, Frank Lloyd Wright, world renowned architect, was commissioned to design a new building for the congregation after the burning of their building on Linwood Boulevard. Wright envisioned the entire property at 46 th and Main Streets being devoted to parking with the church building supported on graceful pillars, similar to the mushroom-shaped supports at the Johnson Wax Company office building in Racine, Wisconsin. Plans included a 1,000-seat auditorium with accommodations for a Sunday School of more than 700. Also included were a roof garden to be used for entertainment and other church functions, as well as a radical approach in construction of heating and cooling systems. Wright was considered a genius by some and was known for his complete departure from the ordinary. It was expected that the new church building would be no exception. The idea of air-conditioning for the building was met with much disfavor from Wright exclaiming "I’ve gotten more colds in so-called air-conditioned buildings than any other place." He went on to explain that the building he envisioned would be comfortably cool in the summer and warm in the winter using a floor heating and cooling system. Wright presented his finished plans to the pertinent departments of the church in June, 1940. Parking for 150 cars was allowed; construction of the building would be of steel and rose-tinted concrete. A green copper dome would sit above the chancel area. Wright claimed the building would be "fireproof, earthquake, and vermin-proof" and upkeep would be virtually nil. Wright also claimed that "it is no mere church building, but a new order dated 10 years ahead of its time."

In Christ's name and by his grace, we accept our mission of witness and service to all people. We rejoice in God, maker of heaven and earth, and in the covenant of love which binds us to God and one another. Through baptism into Christ, we enter into newness of life and are made one with the whole people of God. In the communion of the Holy Spirit we are joined together in discipleship and in obedience to Christ. Within the universal church we receive the gift of ministry and the light of scripture. In the bonds of Christian faith we yield ourselves to God that we may serve the One whose kingdom has no end. Blessing, glory and honor be to God forever, Amen." http://www.sewanee.edu/Theology/DOCCFolder/DOCChome.html
Disciples of Christ in Community (DOCC) is an adult education program which provides an experience in building Christian community while encouraging individual spiritual growth. It began in 1975 at Trinity Church, New Orleans, under the leadership of Rev. John Stone Jenkins. It is now under the auspices of the School of Theology Programs Center of the University of the South. To begin a DOCC program a team of clergy and lay- persons are trained at the DOCC Summer Conference in Sewanee or one of the off-site conferences held at various locations around the country. A team consists of a presenter and two or more group facilitators. Clergy or theologically trained laypersons serve as presenters. At each of the 21 sessions, a 30 minute presentation is given. After which, the participants gather in small groups of about ten to discuss the significance of the presentation to their lives. In an accepting and caring atmosphere, group members can grow in awareness of the purpose and potential of the Church, and discover and define personal ministry. The fee for the program is $75 per participant for the entire session. The DOCC Year One course consists of 21 sessions, but it can be expanded or reduced to fit the needs of the congregation.
