Massachusetts Congregationalist Political Thought, 1760-1790: The Design of Heaven
Historical Journal of Massachusetts , Winter 1998 by Field, Peter Massachusetts Congregationalist Political Thought, 1760-1790: The Design of Heaven. By Dale S. Kuehne. Columbia, Missouri, 1996 (University of Missouri Press, 2910 Le Mone Blvd., Columbus, MO 65201). $37.50. . Finding something novel to write about the well-plowed ground of New England Congregationalist thought is no easy task. It is no exaggeration to claim that scholars have exhaustively examined the Congregationalist clergy's published sermons. In Massachusetts Congregationalist Political Thought, 1760-1790: The Design of Heaven, Dale S. Kuehne attempts to offer some new insight into the political thought of these prominent religious figures in the era of the American Revolution. Building on the work of Alice Baldwin and Alan Heimert, Kuehne examines the clergy's published sermons in order to highlight its importance in the coming of the Revolution in the Bay colony. While this is not a new claim, Kuehne effectively demonstrates how the clergy proved to be "an important component of the Massachusetts political class during the founding era." Drawing heavily on Harry Stout's The New England Soul, which he celebrates as a "monumental study," Kuehne argues that the Congregational church functioned "as the spiritual and political center" of the lives of most citizens. However, unlike Stout, Kuehne eschews delving into his subjects' unpublished sermons and other documentary evidence, choosing instead to base his study solely on the published sermons. This poses significant limitations on the types of conclusions one can draw from his work. It would certainly seem to undermine his claim to "provide a glimpse of what the "silent" political masses heard."

History of congregationalist (Independent)Churches in the Isle of Man.
http://www.isle-of-man.com/manxnotebook/parishes/nc/cong.htm
Congregationalist Churches
Congregationalism really began on the Island with the appointment of Samuel Haining as Minister in 1808. They opened their first chapel in 1813 in Athol Street Douglas from whence the congregation, after what appears to be some form of split, moved to Finch Road in 1866 and also to another chapel in Circular Road; A small chapel was also built in Union Mills. Nightingale in his Lancashire Nonconformity , 1893, gives the most detailed history available concerning the Congregationalists. The Evangelical Magazine for November 1808 has the following: The Gazette 27-Feb-1817 quotes Miles Leah as new independent preacher at Castletown - this M. Leah would appear to have later joined the Primitive Methodists as he is reported to have ministered at their first camp meeting 3 June 1823 and to have opened a new chapel in Braddan in Aug 1824 (when described as Mr Leah from Ramsey). The Manx Advertiser 20 June 1822 reports the opening of an independent chapel at Peel - this would appear to have been in the one-time Barracks though it is possible they used the long cellars at the rear of Castle street properties.

First Congregationalist (UCC)
We attended a nearby ''http://www.sanfranciscoucc.org/" target="blank">UCC congregation today. Its a small congregation (40 people or so) with very friendly congregants. We were welcomed with open arms and smiles. Definately a place that made you feel like you just walked into an old forgotten friend's home. We can't say enough about how friendly and warm the congregation is. The relatively new pastor hails from Germany and gave a wonderful sermon (about temptation, it is lent afterall!) and included a sweet prayer for Emma (to have peace and love in this world) in the community prayer time. I think he must set the tone for the congregation, he was welcoming and warm himself. They are moving to a new location, and meet there once a month (to get a 'feel' for the neighborhood and its needs and how they might want to design their new building, I was told :). Its an 'older' congregation, Emma was the only child there. They had no qualms about a toddler in the service (handed us a packet with paper and crayons, stickers) and didn't have a separate place for children. It might be difficult for us to attend there regularly, Emma pretty much spends the entire service running around and talking/singing. Though they say they don't mind (and in fact seemed to enjoy her presence), it does make it difficult for us and Emma (she gets antsy quickly). Perhaps the occasional visit and maybe when Emma is older and can actually sit through a service.

ARE CONGREGATIONALISTS REAL CHRISTIANS?
from www.ChristiansforDean.info
Many people have written to us here at Christians for Dean to say that congregationalists are not really Christians. This is not surprising, due to a lot of disinformation circulating in the press.
For the sake of accuracy, I submit the following informative press release from the UCC:
Howard Dean is one of many United Church of Christ members:
A feature news release by J. Bennett Guess
Editor, United Church News
Like Bill Clinton and Al Gore, presidential candidate Richard Gephardt wears the Southern Baptist tag, while George Bush and John Edwards are United Methodists. John Kerry and Dennis Kucinich are life-long Roman Catholics.
Carol Moseley Braun, no longer Catholic, worships as an Episcopalian. Joseph Lieberman is an Orthodox Jew, and the Rev. Al Sharpton, a Pentecostal minister, spends his Sunday mornings in the pulpit.
Dean's wife, Judith Steinberg Dean, who also is a doctor, is Jewish. Their two children have been raised with exposure to both traditions by observing Jewish and Christian holidays.
But New England is not the only place where the UCC can be found. Located in all 50 states and Puerto Rico, the UCC also is formidable in New York and Pennsylvania, the industrial Midwest, Missouri, the West Coast, Florida and Hawaii.
