Peace Church Bible Study Home Page
Welcome! This web site is for anyone with an interest in the Bible and the "Historic Peace Churches" (Brethren, Mennonites, Quakers). I hope this site will:
  • Help bridge the gap between academic/scholarly readers of the Bible and non-academics, and between "believers" and those who feel no religious affinity for the biblical text. Help people who want to learn the languages in which the earliest manuscripts of the Bible are written: Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek. I'm particularly interested in those who are studying these languages outside a formal classroom setting for whatever reason. Help Brethren, Mennonites, Quakers (and anyone who feels an affinity for any of these groups) to engage Scripture more deeply. Offer ideas for working with Scripture ecumenically and in interfaith settings. Give me some practice learning HTML and web page design.
Please let me know what you think about how I'm doing with any of this. I'm especially interested in communicating and synergizing with folks who share any of these goals and interests. Thanks! Grace and peace of the Lord to you!

On the Dunkard Teachings
The Dunkard Brethren Church, founded in 1928, is a conservative element of the Church of the Brethren. The church uniformly maintains that its only creed is the New Testament. In a nonliturgical church such as the Dunkard Brethren, cultural inheritance and geography will inevitably, with the passage of time, cause some differences in local customs. Yet the Dunkard Brethren have preserved a remarkable homogeneity, the great annual meeting, which is an annual reunion as well, being a definite element in preserving unity of outlook. There is no binding creed other than the New Testament itself, yet the

Alva J. McClain, Th.m., D.D., LL.D.
Founder and First President,
Grace Theological Seminary
Foreword: This sermon was prepared while Dr. Alva J. McClain was the pastor of the First Brethren Church of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Several young men of that church were urged by friends to enter the Masonic lodge and they came to Dr. McClain for counsel in the matter. As the outcome of a conference with them he promised to make a fair investigation of the organization on the basis of such Masonic literature as might be available to the general public, and to report his findings in the form of a sermon to the congregation. Following the delivery of the sermon to a large audience, a number of interested friends made provision for its publication requesting that it be printed as delivered with as little change as possible. This will explain the conversational manner. This booklet has had wide circulation, having gone through six printings. In order to make the documentation up to date, the references in the Encyclopedia of Freemasonry were taken from the "New and Revised Edition" published by the Masonic History company in 1929. BMH Books sends forth this, the seventh printing with the prayer that this important message by the late Dr. Alva J. McClain might serve in an increasing ministry of helpfulness to persons being confronted by Freemasonry, and as Dr. McClain himself said in an earlier foreword, "that its ministry may be used to open the eyes of men, that they may see and honour the Lord Jesus Christ as the 'true God, and eternal life' (1 John 5:20)." The Confession of Faith
Evangelical United Brethren
Dennis Bratcher, ed. From the Discipline of the Evangelical United Brethren Church, 1963 The Evangelical United Brethren Church was formed in 1946 by the merger of The Church of the United Brethren in Christ and the Evangelical Church. In 1968, the Evangelical United Brethren Church merged with the Methodist Church to form the United Methodist Church (US).
We believe in the one true, holy and living God, Eternal Spirit, who is Creator, Sovereign and Preserver of all things visible and invisible. He is infinite in power, wisdom, justice, goodness and love, and rules with gracious regard for the well-being and salvation of men, to the glory of his name. We believe the one God reveals himself as the Trinity: Father, Son and Holy Spirit, distinct but inseparable, eternally one in essence and power.
We believe in Jesus Christ, truly God and truly man, in whom the divine and human natures are perfectly and inseparably united. He is the eternal Word made flesh, the only begotten Son of the Father, born of the Virgin Mary by the power of the Holy Spirit. As ministering Servant he lived, suffered and died on the cross. He was buried, rose from the dead and ascended into heaven to be with the Father, from whence he shall return. He is eternal Savior and Mediator, who intercedes for us, and by him all men will be judged.

Historic Church Documents: The Brethren Card
July is Historic Church Document Month here.
When I was a child and my father was a student at Wheaton College, almost every Sunday we drove to the southside of Chicago (Yes, Leroy Brown territory) to attend and help out in the Sunday service at a little Brethren in Christ mission that my grandma's cousin and his wife* had in an old storefront building there. They lived in the dark and narrow apartment up above the storefront sanctuary along with a couple of spinster ladies** who also worked in the mission.
The dining room was the biggest room in the apartment, and the oval table filled the whole room. We always stayed for Sunday dinner, along with several others of the people who attended the service. That's where I learned to love cauliflower with cream sauce.
