The academy is a joint program of Bethany Theological Seminary, a Church of the Brethren seminary with a main campus located in Richmond, Ind., and the Church of the Brethren General Board. The Vital Pastor experience is a self-selected group of pastors who determine their own study focus for a two-year venture. The experience begins with an immersion retreat that takes the form of travel, including international travel. One group left April 17 to visit early Brethren sites in Germany and Switzerland. Continuing the Work of Jesus. Peacefully. Simply. Together.
To continue the work of Jesus Christ, one cannot stand still. It is essential to move, to be transformed, to embrace living in a way that is consistent with both His teachings and His example. In an ideal world, this would be an easy thing. Because ours is not an ideal world, it is important to be a part of a community of people who encourage and uphold one another in this faith journey. Many of us have found such a place at Oak Grove Church of the Brethren. It is a place that is constantly changing as we seek to discover a deeper relationship with God and one another. (click here for music) Jesus said . . . "I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father, but by Me."
(John 14:6)
Greetings from the Bristolville Church of the Brethren, located in northeast Ohio 30 miles north of Youngstown!
With roots in the Anabaptist and Pietist movements, we are part of a 140,000-member Protestant denomination which traces its roots to Germany and the year 1708. Serious believers were dissatisfied with the "politically correct" churches of the day, which put an emphasis on man-made standards rather than the plain and pure Word of God. Believers often met informally to pray and study Scripture. It was in 1708 that Alexander Mack and seven other individuals reached the conviction that as followers of Christ, they should be baptized as an outward testimony of their inward commitment. Since infant baptism was routinely practiced in the state-approved churches, to be rebaptized as an adult was considered a crime against the state. As a result, many believers suffered persecution, and even martyrdom. As a result of the persecution, believers who made up the Brethren movementknown at that time as "New Baptists," and later German Baptist Brethrenbegan migrating to America. The name "Church of the Brethren" was not used until 1908. Four other denominations trace their heritage to the same source as the Church of the Brethrenthe Old Order Brethren, Ashland Brethren, Dunkard Brethren, and Grace Brethren.

This is a picture of what the church looked like when it started in 1899. Notice these signs of the times: no stained glass windows, a picket fence around the church, a kerosene street lamp in front, and cobblestoned street.
This is a picture of the current church. Notice the changes since we started over 100 years ago in 1899: stained glass windows, stone wall instead of fence, and a concrete sidewalk and paved street have replaced the cobblestoned.

Church of the Brethren STATEMENTS ON CAPITAL PUNISHMENT Annual Conference, 1959. We commend current efforts to abolish capital punishment and call upon Brethren everywhere to use their influence and their witness against it. Annual Conference, 1975. (The following statement is part of a much longer paper on "Criminaljustice." It is included in a section of recommendations entitled "Reforming the System.") " . . .Brethren are encouraged to work for the following changes: that the use of capital punishment be abolished." General Board, 1979. The Church of the Brethren General Board views with deep concern and alarm the resumption of the use of capital punishment. We affirm the Church of the Brethren Annual Conference Statements of 1957, 1959, and 1975 which uphold the sanctity of human life and personality, oppose the use of capital punishment, and encourage Brethren to work for the abolition of the death penalty. We encourage Brethren to express their opposition to capital punishment, especially to governors and state legislators in states where capital punishment has been established or is being considered. We deplore the taking of human life, whether by the hand of an individual or through the working of a judicial system. We pray, in the spirit of Jesus Christ who calls us to share his ministry of reconciliation, that our society will turn away from the use of capital punishment.
