Brethren, Dunkers, Dunkards
General Information The term Brethren identifies several Christian groups of common origin, at an earlier date frequently called "Dunkers," of which the Church of the Brethren is today the largest. The movement began in Germany in 1708 as part of the spiritual awakening called Pietism. In that year a small group led by Alexander Mack (1679 - 1735) baptized one another by immersion, facedown, three times in a flowing stream: this form of Baptism became a distinctive practice. Mack and his followers migrated to Pennsylvania from Germany in 1719. Since then, small groups have broken away from the main body, either because it seemed too liberal or not liberal enough. Among all Brethren, trine immersion is practiced and a pacifist witness maintained. The Church of the Brethren lists 161,824 members in 1,044 congregations (1986). The Brethren Church and the Old German Baptist Brethren are much smaller. BELIEVE

Unitarian Universalist Service Committee Coffee Project Church of the Brethren Coffee Project Print Email The Church of the Brethren Coffee Project is an innovative way for Brethren congregations to reach out to communities in the coffee-growing world. As Christians we can address a consumer dilemma by buying coffee that is fairly traded. Through the project, farmers and their families earn a fairer share of income, have access to credit and technical support, and gain a trading partner they can trust, a Fair Trade organization called Equal Exchange. At the same time, your congregation can enjoy fellowship and learn more about the world, its economy and our part in it. There are many ways that your community can become involved in the Church of the Brethren Coffee Project. Within your congregation there are committees, such as Social Justice or the youth groups, that might sponsor the project. Then, as your congregation enjoys this delicious coffee, members and visitors alike can take time to learn more about its impact on the people who grow it. Read about small-scale farmers in the developing world and the ways in which the Church of the Brethren is helping their communities. Discuss issues of human rights and economic justice in the global marketplace and take action in the spirit of love.

    Church of the Brethren resettlement staff members, Alex Kirculescu and Stan Noffsinger, serve newly arriving refugees at the Brethren Service Center in New Windsor, Maryland. The Church of the Brethren and its Emergency Response/Service Ministry has been involved with refugee ministries since World War II and has worked in partnership with Church World Service for many years. Photo: CWS/New Windsor The Church of the Brethren, a historic peace church, has long been involved in the ministry of refugee resettlement. It began by providing assistance to people left homeless by the devastation of World War II. In 1949, congressional action opened the way for large numbers of refugees to enter the United States. That same year the Church of the Brethren Annual Conference called on the churches to help resettle 1,000 families displaced by the war. Within a year, Church of the Brethren congregations had resettled 500 families and the goal of 1,000 was reached the following year. Since that time, the Church of the Brethren has been involved in the resettlement of refugees fleeing from brutal and oppressive conditions resulting from war and civil strife. Refugees have come from all over the world, representing the spectrum of racial, social, ethnic and religious diversity. Working closely with CWS, the Church of the Brethren has resettled refugees in congregations throughout the U.S.

They were popularly known as Dunkards, Dunkers, or Tunkers, from the German for “to dip,” referring to their method of baptizing. The Brethren evolved from the Pietist movement in Germany. The first congregation was organized there in 1708 by Alexander Mack. Persecution drove them to America where, under Peter Becker, they settled (1719) in Germantown, Pa. From that and other settlements in Pennsylvania they spread westward and into Canada. The Brethren oppose war and advocate temperance, the simple life, plain dress, and “obedience to Christ rather than obedience to creeds and cults.” The original group, at present the largest in the United States, is the Church of the Brethren (Conservative Dunkers); the local churches are united by an annual conference that elects a general board to supervise the national church program. From the Church of the Brethren there have been separations into the Seventh-Day Baptists, German Baptists (1728; see Beissel, Johann Conrad

The General Board's Emergency Response/Service Ministries office activated Child Care in Aviation Incident Response (CAIR) teams, calling them to the Brethren Service Center in New Windsor, Md., for orientation. Team members were coming in by car from a variety of locations as far away as Nebraska. ER/SM manager Stan Noffsinger said he expected some teams to be taken by van to New York Thursday or Friday. They will go to yet-to-be-named locations in the city, which saw its World Trade Center twin towers flattened Tuesday when hijacked planes flew into them. In addition, a $25,000 grant from the General Board's Emergency Disaster Fund was approved to assist with the CAIR teams, Disaster Child Care, and emergency response volunteers, as needed. [From Church of the Brethren Annual Conference Statement on Health Care in the United States (1989)
    and Church of the Brethren General Board Resolution on Health Care in the United States (1992)] Throughout the Scriptures, God calls for justice and fairness for all people. Therefore, it seems particularly clear that in the richest nation on earth, God expects access to adequate health care to be a basic right for all citizens, regardless of gender, race or financial status. While good health cannot be assured to everyone, good health care can and should be guaranteed. Our Judeo-Christian heritage has taught us that God’s holy purpose includes everyone, that every person is of worth. As God’s people, we are to be concerned for the health of all people and to nurture health for one another. In the past, the church has accepted the responsibility of caring for others; today the church is called to a new level of involvement. As God’s people on earth, the church is called to work for high quality, comprehensive health care for all. AFFIRMATIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS:
    • We believe that as tangible evidence of the covenantal nature of our Christian faith, all persons should receive adequate health care as a basic human right and as a reflection of personal dignity;
