© Press Association In Scotland, the monarch is required by the 1707 Treaty of Union to preserve the Church of Scotland (Scotland's established Church). The monarch takes an oath to preserve the Church of Scotland at the meeting of the Privy Council immediately following his or her accession.
The Queen is not the Supreme Governor of the Church of Scotland, but an ordinary member. In Scotland, there is a division of powers by which Church and State are each supreme in their own sphere; the Church is self-governing in all that concerns its own activities. Its supreme authority is the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, presided over by a Moderator chosen each year by the Assembly itself.
The Crown is represented at the Assembly, sometimes by the monarch in person, but more often by a Lord High Commissioner appointed each year by The Queen. Provided that it acts within the law of the land, the Assembly has the power to pass resolutions which can have effect without Royal Assent.

Although the beginnings of the collection date back to the early Ontario Agricultural College Library, the Scottish Church and Religious History Collection began in earnest with the establishment of the History Department in 1965. As chairman W. Stanford Reid was particularly interested in Scottish church history, this area was very quickly built up. Grants from the Macdonald Stewart Foundation were used to further develop the collection in the early 1970s. Description
Material on all aspects of Scottish religious and church history are collected at a comprehensive level. One exception is that Scottish sermons are collected only if they are of interest beyond the purely theological. For example, Rutherford's sermons, while primarily doctrinal and theological in nature, are in essence the justification for the actions of the Cameronian Covenanters in the 1680s. Another exception is that Scottish church hymnals are collected only to exemplify important changes in church policy or disputes. Language
English predominates, but material in any language, especially French and Gaelic, is collected if it is on Scottish church history as defined above. Gaelic biblical material is limited to a few examples from significant periods of translations. However, all Gaelic material brought by early Canadian immigrants is of interest.

http://www.edinphoto.org.uk/1/1_church_of_scotland_history.htm
Church of Scotland and some other churches Brief History Scotland's religion was Roman Catholic until John Knox created the reformed Church of Scotland in 1560. The Church of Scotland was a Presbyterian churches. In Presbyterian churches, there were no Bishops, and the congregation played an active part in the running of the church and election of Ministers. This became the Established Church of Scotland in 1567. Establishment meant recognition by the Government as being the official church in Scotland. However, some thought that Establishment had resulted in too much interference by the Government, and they broke away to form new churches. The State attempted to introduce Bishops. The Covenanters objected and were persecuted. However, Presbyterianism was restored in 1690. 1733 - The Secession Church broke away. 1761 - The Relief Church broke away Both these break-aways occurred when the State introduced new rules for the election of ministers. 1843 - The Free Church of Scotland broke away.

The Baptist Cathedral Of Europe
T he Church has been part of the Paisley sky-line for a 100 years and is sometimes called the Baptist Cathedral of Europe. The spiritual home of a broad-based congregation in the Baptist tradition, the Church is primarily a place of worship, prayer, music and the preaching of the gospel. As such it offers a welcome to all who come through its great oak doors. The beauty of the building speaks its own silent message. There is the intricate beauty of the wood carvings and the spaciousness and symmetry of the sanctuary with its vaulted roof and cruciform shape. Marble, alabaster and mosaics abound. The building, in red sandstone, is Gothic in design, topped with a crown spire rising to more than 60 metres above ground-level.

SCOTLAND'S CHURCHES AFTER 1700
This diagram is taken from the Collins Encyclopaedia of Scotland with some fairly minor changes. Although not specifically aimed at genealogists this is an excellent resource with small articles on places and people as well as other aspects of Scotland.
The top of the diagram starts about 1700 and shows only the Church of Scotland and the Cameronians as having had a prior existence. There are also the Episcopal Church of Scotland and the Roman Catholic Church which would be represented as two straight vertical lines going from top to bottom of the diagram. The churches shown could be classed as presbyterian but the Baptists and some others are omitted. I should also say that some texts I have read do not fully agree with the diagram

This group broke off from the Free Presbyterian Church in 1989. An elder of the church, Lord Mackay, was also Lord Chancellor which is the highest judicial office in England. He attended the (Roman Catholic) requiem masses for two of his very good friends. After all most people attend weddings, funerals of other denominations without hypocrisy as a token of love for their friends or the departed. Nevertheless he was excommunicated.
