On this page: Encyclopedia Wikipedia Mentioned In Or search: - The Web - Images - News - Blogs - Shopping Church of Scotland Encyclopedia Scotland, Church of, the established national church of Scotland, Presbyterian (see Presbyterianism ) in form. The first Protestants in Scotland, led by Patrick Hamilton , were predominantly Lutheran. However, with the return of John Knox from Geneva, the Scottish Reformation came under the influence of Calvinism. Following the signing of the First Covenant in 1557 by the great barons and other nobles, Parliament abolished (1560) the jurisdiction of the Roman Catholic Church in Scotland. A Reformed confession of faith was adopted, and the church was organized along Presbyterian lines. The first general assembly of the church met in Edinburgh, and the First Book of Discipline (1560) was drawn up. The Second Book of Discipline (1581) was ratified by Parliament in 1592. This definitely settled the Presbyterian form of polity and the Calvinistic doctrine as the recognized Protestant establishment in the country. But under James VI (from 1603, James I of England) and the other Stuart rulers who followed, periods of restored episcopacy interrupted the progress of the new organization and were accompanied by confusion and protest.

You are visitor number
Welcome to our website! Jesus said 'I have come that you may have life - life in all its fullness.' (John 10:10) Welcome to the Parish of Ceres and Springfield, situated in a beautiful, rural part of the east of Scotland. Our parish is in north east Fife, a few miles from the county town Cupar and the town of St Andrews - the world-famous home of golf and seat of Scotland's oldest University, founded in 1411. This is an excellent area for holidays (the Scottish Tourist Board would be delighted to hear from you!) Our parish includes the villages of Ceres, Springfield, Pitscottie, Craigrothie and Chance Inn, with churches at Ceres and Springfield. To the south, the City of Edinburgh is only 1 hour away by road or train and the City of Dundee is less than 25 minutes away to the north. Local bus services are provided by Stagecoach (Fife Scottish Omnibuses), for times tel. 01334-474238, and the nearest railway stations are at Cupar and Springfield. Ceres is one of the most attractive and historic villages in Scotland, notable for its statue of the Provost, the Fife Folk Museum, the Hill of Tarvit Mansion House, Archbishop Sharp's Bridge and for having the shortest High Street in Scotland. Ceres Church was built in 1806, replacing an older church on the site. It is a grade B listed building and largely unchanged since first built. One of its most unusual features are the long Communion tables running the full length of the church. The church building is open for services, on "Doors Open Day" every September (see local publicity) and also on request. The history of Ceres can be traced back almost 1100 years; a church was established by Celtic Christian "Culdee" monks from nearby St Andrews. Ceres also has its own primary school, shops, Post Office and newsagent - the village lies on the B939 road, approximately 7 miles west of St Andrews.

The cause of the separation lay in the demand of the laity for a voice in matters of patronage. Previously abolished, patronage had been restored in 1712; protests and remonstrances resulted. In cases brought up for decision, civil and ecclesiastical courts disagreed with each other. The intrusion of ministers upon unwilling congregations became a serious issue. Congregations everywhere were divided. In 1843, after 10 years of conflict, a body of nonintrusionists in the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland signed a protest, withdrew, and constituted themselves the first Assembly of the Free Church. Doctrines The basis of the doctrines of the Church of Scotland are to be found in the Westminster Confession. The Westminster Confession was accepted as the Confession of faith by the English parliament in 1647 and by the Scottish parliament in 1649. The Confession affirms the inspiration of Scripture (but rejects the Apocrypha as "not being of divine inspiration"), the Trinity, double predestination, justification by grace through faith, and the sacraments of baptism and the Lord's Supper as the only two sacraments. History The precise origins of Christianity in Scotland are unknown. Missions arrived in Scotland in the 5th century, culminating in the mission of St Columba in the middle of the 6th century and the founding of the great monastery of Iona. Prior to the middle of the 11th century the Church in Scotland was Celtic in character. In the 11th century, however, under the reign of King Malcolm III and Queen Margaret, the church in Scotland came increasingly under the jurisdiction of the Church of Rome so that it became in many respects indistinguishable from other European churches.
Like other countries in northern Europe, Scotland came under the sway of the Reformation. Reformed theology was first brought to Scotland by George Wishart (1513?-1546). However, reformed theology was only properly established through the work of John Knox, who had been influenced by Calvinism while in Switzerland and had returned from Switzerland to Scotland in 1559. The following year the Scottish parliament accepted Protestantism as the official religion of Scotland and abolished the Mass.

New College and the Church of Scotland
As in the sister colleges, the Principal of New College is a minister of the Church of Scotland, and is appointed by the General Assembly of the Church from the senior academic staff of the School. The Principal, with the College Senate, is responsible to the Church for overseeing the academic part of the training of its candidates. Assisted by the New College Financial Board, the Principal and Senate are also responsible for investments held by the College. Where necessary, the Principal seeks to interpret the Church to the University and the University to the Church. The Senate of New College is composed of the Professors of the School of Divinity (together with the Head of School, if not a professor). Graeme Auld, Professor of Hebrew Bible, was inducted as Principal in October 2002. Church and Nation Newsletter 1/03
Special Edition on Iraq
This is the first of what we intend to be regular updates on matters on which the Church of Scotland's Committee on Church and Nation is working. The normal pattern is intended to be that we will cover several topics in each edition. However, given the urgency of the threat of war in Iraq, this edition is given over entirely to that subject. The newsletter will be sent by email to presbytery clerks for them to distribute within their presbytery as they see fit. We hope, however, that at the very least those who make up the presbytery's committee on these areas of the church's concern will receive a copy either by email or on paper.
Iraq
In August 2002 the Moderator of the General Assembly wrote to the Prime Minister: Dear Prime Minister I write to add my voice to the growing chorus, political, military and religious, calling for restraint in relation to Iraq.

Church and Nation Newsletter 2/03
Second Iraq Edition
From all over Scotland we continue to receive messages from people who are perplexed, concerned, angry or sorrowful about the international situation and the part being played in it by the United Kingdom. People who have never taken political action before are asking what they can do: we know of a Kirk Session writing to its MP, Presbyteries having special debates and organising petitions, people writing letters to MPs who have never done so before on any issue at all, people asking about marches or other demonstrations in which they can take part. In this newsletter we offer details of the demonstration in Glasgow on February 15 which will coincide with a meeting to be addressed by Mr Blair, a postcard campaign, and our own most recent communication with Downing Street. Everyone is encouraged to write in similar terms to the Prime Minister.

Short History of the United Free Church of Scotland Presbyterianism Presbyterian describes a method Church Government. The word presbyter means elder, and Presbyterianism means government of the Church by elders, These are divided into two classes, those who rule over the spiritual affairs of the congregation, and those who teach and rule. The latter the ministers, the former the elders, and together they form the Kirk Session, A separate body in a congregation, variously known as a Committee of Management, a Deacons Court, or a Congregational Board, is concerned with property, income and expenditure. Presbyterianism has always asserted pointedly the duty of every member of Church to care personally for the Church and to further it in all its activities by his personal support and interest. Every member has the right to take part in the election of the minister and in the management of the affairs of the congregation. Every member is expected contribute according to his resources. The Church in Scotland The Reformed Church in Scotland came into being in 1560. It was established in 1567. The essence of Establishment is a contractual relation with the state involving certain undertakings and securing certain exclusive privileges and preferences. This contract is expressed and embodied in a series of statutes from 1567 onwards (That in 1587 declares 'There is no other face of Kirk, nor other face of religion, than is presently by the favour of God established within this realm,') concluding with the act of 1921 which embodies nine articles setting forth the constitution of the

http://www.makepovertyhistory.org Welcome to the web site of Barclay Church. Designed by Pilkington, Barclay is an incredible building. But there are plenty of other churches and interesting buildings in Edinburgh. What's different about Barclay is that it is a genuinely mixed group of people; old and young, families and students. All sorts of people are part of Barclay - some who have been part of the church and lived in the area all their lives, some who are only here for a year or two while studying in Edinburgh.
Services and activities
There are two main Sunday services. At 11am there is a fairly traditional service. The 6:30pm service is more relaxed: more modern songs, more participation by the congregation, a wider range of worship styles. For more information, see the What's On section. Text and recordings of recent sermons are available in the Sermon Archive There's an active children's programme , with groups meeting Sunday by Sunday. In particular a large number of secondary school age are part of our "Next" group and are invoved in Barclay's own "Silly Sheep Puppet Company". We run Alpha courses twice a year - in the autumn and in the Spring. Alpha is an informal introduction to, and a chance to discuss, the Christian faith.
