However, in the 2001 national census, 42% of Scots identified themselves as ‘Church of Scotland’ by religion. Although it is the national church, the Kirk is not a " state church ", and in this, and other, regards is dissimilar to the Church of England (the established church in England). Under its constitution, which is recognised by acts of Parliament, the Kirk enjoys complete independence from the state in spiritual matters. It is thus both established and free.

Free Presbyterian Church of Scotland
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
St. Jude's Free Presbyterian church in Glasgow The Free Presbyterian Church of Scotland was formed in and claims to be the spiritual descendant of the Reformation . It is sometimes colloquially known as the Wee Wee Frees (not to be confused with the "Wee Frees" which is the colloquial name for another offshoot of the Church of Scotland, the Free Church of Scotland In the Free Church of Scotland , following the example of the United Presbyterian Church of Scotland and the Church of Scotland ), passed a Declaratory Act relaxing the stringency of subscription to the confession, which was widely perceived as paving the way for unification with the United Presbyterian Church. This was met by a protest from the minister from the island of Raasay , who was later joined by one other minister. The result was that a small number of ministers and congregations, mostly in the Highlands , severed their connection with the Free Church of Scotland and formed the Free Presbyterian Church of Scotland, on strictly orthodox lines. Ethical Problems with Roslin Cloned Embryo Research Decision
The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority's decision to grant the Roslin Institute a license to create cloned human embryos poses ethical problems beyond the strict legality of the proposed research. We commend the aim of the Roslin proposal, to produce cells which exhibit motor neurone disease for studying the causes of this awful disease, but is this reason enough to make cloned embryos?

A very brief history of the village is that from the early 1700s what is now know as the village of Invergowrie existed as four ancient farm hamlets, some evidence of which, still remains. The coming of the railway and many of the houses built from around 1880, together with the completion of the village school around that time, meant that the village started to take on the character it has today. There are 4 church buildings in the area of the village of Invergowrie.

Established in 1560, the Church of Scotland was the only ecclesiastical body established by law in Scotland. The General Assembly was Scotland's only national legislative assembly. It met every May and the moderator, who presided over the General Assembly, was elected annually by the delegates.
By 1901 the membership of the Church of Scotland had reached 662,000. Its leading competitors included the Free Church of Scotland (288,000) the United Presbyterian Church (194,000) and the Scottish Episcopal Church (47,000). There were also Baptists and Methodists and a growing number of Roman Catholics , composed mainly of Irish immigrants, settling in industrial centres such as Glasgow Available from Amazon Books (order below)

Homework Center Fact Monster Favorites Reference Desk Encyclopedia Scotland, Church of Scotland, Church of, the established national church of Scotland, Presbyterian (see Presbyterianism ) in form. The first Protestants in Scotland, led by Patrick Hamilton , were predominantly Lutheran. However, with the return of John Knox from Geneva, the Scottish Reformation came under the influence of Calvinism. Following the signing of the First Covenant in 1557 by the great barons and other nobles, Parliament abolished (1560) the jurisdiction of the Roman Catholic Church in Scotland. A Reformed confession of faith was adopted, and the church was organized along Presbyterian lines. The first general assembly of the church met in Edinburgh, and the First Book of Discipline (1560) was drawn up. The Second Book of Discipline (1581) was ratified by Parliament in 1592. This definitely settled the Presbyterian form of polity and the Calvinistic doctrine as the recognized Protestant establishment in the country. But under James VI (from 1603, James I of England) and the other Stuart rulers who followed, periods of restored episcopacy interrupted the progress of the new organization and were accompanied by confusion and protest.
