Three Anglican City Centre Churches Nottingham, England St Peter and All Saints St Mary the Virgin The Parish Church of St Peter stands in the busy commercial centre of Nottingham and was built in the late 12th century. Oscar Romero (1917-80) 24th March Among those commemorated in new statues on the west front of Westminster Abbey "I am bound, as a pastor, by divine command to give my life for those whom I love, and that is all Salvadoreans, even those who are going to kill me." These words appeared in a newspaper just two weeks before Archbishop Romero was shot while celebrating Holy Communion in the hospital which had been his home since his enthronement in 1977. Quiet, unassuming, conservative in temperament and regarded by the church as safely orthodox, he was an unlikely martyr for the cause of liberation. Oscar Arnulfo Romero y Goldamez was born in 1917 in the town of Cindad Barrios, in the mountains of El Salvador near the border with Honduras. Leaving school at twelve he began an apprenticeship as a carpenter, showing promise as a craftsman, but soon thought about ordination, although his family were not keen. He trained at San Miguel and San Salvador, before completing his theological studies in Rome. Because of the war in Europe there was no member of his family at his ordination in 1942. Oscar became bishop in 1970, serving first as assistant to the aged Archbishop of San Salvador and from 1974 as Bishop of Santiago de Maria. Within three years he was Archbishop of San Salvador.

Welcome to Grappenhall Independent Methodist Church A Brief History The church dates from about 1828, when a young man by the name of Thomas Leah found conversion and soon afterwards became a preacher of the word. In 1855, Thomas Leah, then a family man and residing Grappenhall, decided with several others that a room should be opened for worship. This happened on 2nd May that year and Grappenhall Independent Methodist Church was born. The meeting, held in a room over a bakery in Knutsford Road, prospered, until by the year 1880 it became evident that new arrangements would have to be made. It was decided to build a small Church on Chester Road, close to Stanny Lunt Bridge and with much rejoicing, this was opened on 9th November, 1881. The building remains to this day as a private dwelling. Eventually, through varying circumstances, it again became obvious that new premises were required. The subsequent period of hard work led in 1913 to the building of the present Church on Knutsford Road, which opened on the 8th November of that year. Grappenhall at that time was rapidly developing as a residential and dormitory area and the new Church prospered. This was particularly true with regard to the Sunday School, which developed at an almost embarrassing rate, so that by the mid-1930's there was a desperate shortage of space. The problem persisted, and it was not until 1943 that the first part of the answer came with the purchase of a bungalow situated to the rear of our premises. While this additional space helped to some degree, the difficulties were not fully overcome until 1951, by which time the bungalow had been demolished and the space thus made available used to extend the Schoolroom to its present size. Both Church and School have been modernised and well maintained, resulting in very attractive premises.

FOUNDATION OF THE SEE When St. Augustine was sent to evangelize England by St. Gregory the Great Christian and a disciple of St. Gregory of Tours . This led him to Canterbury, where he converted the king and many thousands of Saxons in 597, the very year of his landing. Though St. Gregory had planned the division of England into two archbishoprics, one at London and one at York, St. Augustine's success at Canterbury explains how the southern archiepiscopal see came to be fixed there instead of at London. The first beginnings of the diocese are told by St. Bede (Hist. Eccl., I, xxxiii). "When Augustine, the first Archbishop of Canterbury, assumed the episcopal throne in that royal city, he recovered therein, by the King's assistance, a church which, as he was told, had been constructed by the original labour of Roman believers. This church he consecrated in the name of the Saviour, our God and Lord Jesus Christ , and there he established an habitation for himself and all his successors".

Home Contact Home On Saturday 1st November for the first time in many, many years, St Andrews had a girl representing the Manchester Regiment in the National Swimming finals. It was a well attended event with teams from Blackburn and Ulster also competing. Our Junior Senior swam extremely well finishing fourth in her individual race of front crawl and also finishing fourth in the relay. It was a great chance to meet up with old friends and also to make some new ones. Lets hope our success continues in the years to come. Band Competition Report TYMBA judges. On Sunday 12th October we entered the Greater Manchester Youth Marching Bands competition as organised by the Traditional Youth Marching Bands Association Band Competition Looms Near The band is practising for the Greater Manchester Marching Band Competition which is being held on Sunday 12th October at the George H Carnall Leisure Centre, Davyhulme. As you can see from the picture below, the girls were successful last year and won the Novice section. We are hoping to win again this year and the girls are all working very hard in band practice to ensure we have a good chance of success. We are hoping to have plenty of support on the day and if you would like to cheer us on, then please come down to the George H Carnall Leisure Centre on the 12th October. Trip to Chester Zoo The brigade received a very kind donation from Siemens Plc , who are based on Princess Parkway in Manchester. After much discussion, the girls and officers decided to spend the money on an excursion to Chester Zoo. Everyone agreed that it was a fantastic trip in which we were able to see some interesting and fascinating animals. There were rhinos, giraffes and lions from Africa, strange birds called
