Opinion Editorial: Separation anxiety / Church of England resists disestablishment Monday, July 15, 2002 Whether the issue is the U.S. Supreme Court's approval of a voucher program in Cleveland or Congress' apoplectic condemnation of a court decision striking "under God" from the Pledge of Allegiance, we often hear that the "wall of separation" between church and state is being demolished. To put such concerns in perspective, it's useful to look across the ocean. The Church of England is "by law established" and bishops are chosen (from a list prepared by a church commission) by the prime minister, and then ratified by the queen. Although even Prince Charles has raised questions about whether the monarch of a multireligious nation should be identified with one denomination, opponents of a change in the church's official status are fighting back. Last weekend the General Synod of the Church of England overwhelmingly rejected a motion to take the appointment of bishops out of the hands of the prime minister. The vote came as the British press has been reporting that Prime Minister Tony Blair is likely to look outside England for the next archbishop of Canterbury. The leading candidate is Archbishop Rowan Williams, the head of the Anglican Church in Wales, which has no ties to the British government.

Church of England urged to follow ACC divestment recommendation on Caterpillar
Press Release, War on Want, 8 July 2005
The Church of England should follow the recommendation of the Anglican Consultative Council and vote to divest from companies supporting Israel’s illegal occupation of Palestine during its General Synod this weekend, campaigners will say at a fringe meeting at York University on Friday (8 July). The Church of England’s Ethical Investment Advisory Group has been examining whether the £2 million of shares currently held in Caterpillar are consistent with the Church’s ethical investment policy, which prohibits investment in arms companies or companies making ‘weapons platforms’ such as naval vessels or tanks.
Caterpillar has been singled out by the United Nations for complicity in human rights abuses in the Occupied Palestinian Territories. As detailed in War on Want’s recent ‘alternative report’ on Caterpillar, thousands of Palestinian homes and vast swathes of agricultural land have been destroyed by the Israeli military using armoured Caterpillar D9 bulldozers. Caterpillar bulldozers have also been used in the construction of Israel’s Separation Wall, ruled illegal by the International Court of Justice one year ago, in July 2004.

Church of England Brainstorm Bombs
By Lee Duigon
MichNews.com
Aug 8, 2005 Can you believe this idea isn't working? Church of England bishops thought they had a brainstorm last month when they announced that avowedly homosexual clergy could "marry" their "partners"as long as they promised they wouldn't have sex afterward, ever again. This is the kind of idea that only works in a movie, and then only because the screenwriters say it does. Sort of like the hero pointing to one warehouse in a row of 100 and saying, "The bad guys are in there!" And of course they arewhen in real life the bad guys aren't even in that city anymore.

Upholding the Inerrancy of Scripture
Adhering to the Westminster Standards
Fulfilling the Great Commission History The Evangelical Presbyterian Church in England and Wales (EPCEW) is a young denomination with roots that go back hundreds of years. It was formed in two stages.
  • In 1986 the London Presbyterian Conference drew together a group of ministers and other active Christians who wanted to see a new Presbyterian Church in England. From that conference arose the Presbyterian Association in England (PAE).
  • In 1996 five churches that had identified themselves with the PAE declared themselves to be a Presbytery, calling themselves the Evangelical Presbyterian Church in England and Wales.
Since that time the presbytery has grown to 9 churches and is currently developing a new mission church in the Birmingham area. Doctrinal Commitment The EPCEW holds as its confession the Westminster Confession of Faith (WCF), which was drawn up at Westminster Abbey in London at the request of Parliament in the 1640's. The WCF and its related Catechisms ( Larger and Shorter ) have been the standard confession of faith for Presbyterians all around the world ever since the Church of Scotland first adopted it in 1647.

The choir of St Peter's Church, Nottingham
There is a long-standing choral tradition at St Peters, developed by men such as Vincent Trivett (Organist 1909-1947) and Kendrick Partington (Organist 1957-1994). We try to maintain a good "parish church" standard, and sing a wide range of accompanied and a capella church music: from Byrd and Gibbons to Howells and Leighton, by way of Mozart, Brahms, and the Victorian stalwarts such as Stainer and Stanford. We are fortunate to have the wholehearted support of the Rector in our attempt to maintain this tradition. Sung services We sing a full Choral Evensong on the second Sunday of each month, with the versicles and responses and the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis sung to a composed setting. On the fourth Sunday of the month there is a Ferial Evensong, when the responses are sung to the ferial setting as used at Southwell Minster, and the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis are sung to Anglican chant. Except on certain feast days, the morning service on the first Sunday of the month is Matins, when at least one of the canticles (Te Deum, Jubilate Deo, Benedicite) is sung to a composed setting. At all these services and at the sung Holy Communion (on all Sunday mornings except the first) we sing an anthem. The Director of Music The role of the choirmaster is crucial for a successful choir, and not an easy one to fulfill. While teaching and maintaining a good standard of discipline and musicianship, he must also motivate, encourage and occasionally cajole the members of what is only a voluntary choir. Following Andrew Teague's move to Bradford Cathedral in March 2003, we are delighted to have appointed
