Encyclopedia
England, Church of, the established church of England and the mother church of the Anglican Communion Organization and Doctrine The clergy of the church are of three ancient orders: deacons, priests, and bishops. Except for the celebration of the mass and giving absolution, deacons have the same clerical functions as priests. Only the bishop can ordain, confirm, and consecrate churches. A bishop is given consecration at the hands of other bishops. There are two archbishoprics, Canterbury and York, with the Archbishop of Canterbury taking precedence over the Archbishop of York. The church is established, and all episcopal appointments are still made by the crown; however, the clergy are not paid by the state. Women have been ordained as deacons since 1987 and as priests since 1994. Homosexuality is not a bar to ordination, but being in a homosexual relationship is. In 1919 the Church Assembly was established, consisting of three houses: the upper and lower houses of convocation (i.e., the bishops and other clergy) and an elected house of laity, with the power to prepare measures for enactment by Parliament. In 1970 the Church Assembly was replaced by the General Synod, which retained the basic administrative structure but streamlined certain aspects of church government and allowed for greater participation by the laity. Worship is liturgical and is regulated by the Book of Common Prayer and its revised alternatives, but it varies in degree of ritual between parishes. The creeds in use are the Apostles', the Nicene, and the Athanasian. General standards of doctrine are found in the Thirty-nine Articles, the Book of Common Prayer, the Catechism, and two 16th-century books of homilies. Authority rests in Scripture as interpreted by tradition.

Convocation of the English Clergy
The technical name given in the Church of England to what corresponds in some respects to a provincial synod, though in other respects it differs widely from it. The two ecclesiastical provinces of Canterbury and York have each their Convocation, but that of Canterbury is the more important, and is spoken of as "Convocation" par excellence . The history of its external constitution is continuous down to the present time and is bound up with the development of English constitutional history; its powers and independence, however, were lost at the Reformation; its organization, retained as a mere form for many years, has been utilized of late to give expression to the opinions entertained by the clergy as a body upon questions of the day. Thus it exercises influence, but has no power. The authority of the Crown asserted at the Reformation is still supreme and intact. The history of Convocation may be divided into five periods: (1) Before 1295; (2) From 1295 until the Reformation; (3) The Reformation period; (4) The post-Reformation period; (5) Modern times. (1) Before 1295 Previous to 1295 the Church in England had assembled in diocesan and provincial synods to regulate disciplinary and other matters interesting the body of the clergy. Moreover the

THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND
IN THE SIXTEENTH CENTURY
Henry VII, ultimate victor in the Wars of the Roses and first Tudor monarch, held the burgeoning country together with pragmatic governance. He united the houses of Lancaster and York, and later pacified Scotland, by marriage. For a cash settlement he relinquished several ancient claims to French territory. He disbanded private armies and defeated the Yorkist pretenders with minimal violence. He reorganized the courts and extended the rule of law to every part of his kingdom except Wales. In the first orderly succession since 1422, his son Henry VIII took over the makings of a modern nation-state.
THE BREAK
In 1509, the year he ascended the throne, Henry VIII received papal dispensation to marry his elder brother's widow, Catherine of Aragon. He also engaged the services of Thomas Wolsey, who for a time virtually ruled in his stead. Wolsey built a collection of secular and ecclesiastical titles unusual even in England-lord chancellor, Archbishop of York, cardinal legate, and so on. At the height of his power he merged Church and state in his own person. His high-handedness earned him many enemies. His meddling in Continental affairs created an imbalance of power. Without English involvement, Emperor Charles V (Charles I of Spain) defeated France and brought the Pope to heel. Even so Wolsey might have stayed in favor had Henry not decided at an ebb of English prestige to divorce the Emperor's aunt.

The emerging church of England?
Articles The theory of emerging church Deep in the collective psyche of the ‘emerging church’ is a desire for unity, not as an expression of doctrinal accord or structural integration, but centred around a renewed determination to be a creative, adventurous and authentic people of God in Christ. I have been thinking recently that the most powerful and prophetic form the pursuit of unity in this country might take would be the reunification of the numerous independent and non-conformist churches with the Church of England. I’m not sure I imagine this happening in real terms, but an informal, symbolic reconvergence of the different traditions as the church of England (without the capital C) may in fact prove more significant than the reality of it. These are some preliminary arguments in support of the case. If you find the whole idea preposterous, you may be right - but let it stand as a thought-experiment, a catalyst to explore the question of unity further. I should add that I write this as someone who, although baptized into the Anglican Church as an infant, has worked and worshipped for the most part outside the sphere of Anglicanism. 1. A return to the Church of England, in whatever form it might be conceived, would present a more concrete, effective, and dramatic move towards unity than, say, the development of intermediary or ecumenical structures or the attempt to abandon all forms of ecclesial identity.

Introduction
Print Preview of Section England, Church of or Anglican Church , the Christian church in England, dating from the introduction of Christianity into that country. More specifically, it is the branch of the Christian church that, since the Reformation, has been the established Church of England. The earliest unquestioned historical evidence of an organized Christian church in England is found in the writings of such early Christian fathers as Tertullian and Origen in the first years of the 3rd century, although the first Christian communities probably were established some decades earlier. Three English bishops are known to have been present at the Council of Arles in 314. Others attended the Council of Sardica in 347 and that of Ariminum in 360, and a number of references to the church in Roman Britain are found in the writings of 4th-century Christian fathers.
