It is divided into two provinces - Canterbury in the South of England and York in the North. Each province has a head or Primate - the Archbishops of Canterbury and York. The Church of England is part of the Anglican Communion, which is a worldwide family of churches in more than 160 different countries. On any one Sunday more than a million people attend Church of England services making it the largest Christian denomination in the country. The Established Church The Church of England is the established church, meaning, amongst other things:
  • the Monarch is the the Supreme Governor of the church (theologically Jesus is the head), the Church performs a number of official functions, Church and State are linked
History The Church of England traces its roots back to the early church, but its specifically Anglican identity and its links to the State date back to the Reformation.

Comparative Religion: The Church of England
Most of these basically Lutheran tenets apply to all Protestants. The Calvinist ("puritan") refinements are presented further along. Man's wickedness is so great that no amount of good works could hope to atone for our sin. God, being all good, would not require something of us that is impossible. Therefore, the only thing necessary for salvation is believing in His Name ( "justification by faith" The Church exists to guide but is not necessary for salvation. There is no need for priests to interpret God's will. Supporting the Church, or denying the flesh, does not bring you closer to God. If you are united with Him at all, it is completely and absolutely. The Roman church has corrupted the original doctrines and teachings of Christ and His Apostles for its own purpose, and no longer represents the true faith of Christ. The only source of religious authority is Scripture. The two sacraments are Baptism and Holy Eucharist (Communion). The other so-called sacraments are worthy but not Scripturally justified. No sacrament is efficacious without understanding and faith.

Church of England, Anglican Church
General Information The Church of England is the established church in England. It is divided into two provinces, York and Canterbury, with 43 dioceses and approximately 27 million members. The monarch is technically at the head of the ecclesiastical structure, and the archbishops of Canterbury and York are next in line. The beginnings of the Church of England date at least to the 2d century, when merchants and other travelers first brought Christianity to Britain. It is customary to regard St. Augustine of Canterbury's mission in 597 as marking the formal beginning of the church under papal authority, as it was to be throughout the Middle Ages. In its modern form, the church dates from the English Reformation of the 16th century, when royal supremacy was established and the authority of the papacy repudiated. With the advent of British colonization, the Church of England established churches on every continent and achieved international importance. In time, these churches gained independence, but retained connections with the mother church in the Anglican Communion. The Church of England is identified by adherence to the threefold ministry of bishops, priests, and deacons and by a common order of worship found in the Book of Common Prayer. The church is also characterized by a common attitude of loyalty to Christian tradition, while seeking to accommodate a wide range of people and views. It holds in tension the authorities of tradition, reason, and the Bible, but asserts the primacy of the Bible. It thus seeks to comprehend Catholic, humanist, and reformed elements, historically represented by Anglo-Catholics (high church), Liberals (broad church), and Evangelicals (low church).

NI_MPU('middle'); They will, however, have to give an assurance to their diocesan bishop that they will abstain from sex. The bishops are trying to uphold the church doctrine of forbidding clergy from sex except in a full marriage. They accept, however, that the new law leaves them little choice but to accept the right of gay clergy to have civil partners. The decision is likely to reopen the row over homosexuality that has split the worldwide Anglican communion. It may also overshadow an international meeting of senior bishops next month designed to heal rifts between liberals and conservatives over the issue. The Lesbian and Gay Christian Movement estimates that within five years 1,500 homosexual Anglican clergy will have registered under the new law, which comes into force on December 5. The Church of England proposal is contained in a draft Pastoral Statement on Civil Partnerships, drawn up by Graham James, the Bishop of Norwich. It was discussed at length and provisionally agreed at a meeting last week at a hotel in Market Bosworth, Leicestershire.

Clergy who don't believe in God

Clergy and laity show signs of schism over homosexuality, miracles and the Almighty
HUNDREDS of Church of England clergy doubt the existence of God and fewer than two thirds believe in miracles, a study out today says. NI_MPU('middle'); Whereas 56 per cent of the laity believe that it is wrong for people of the same gender to have sex together, the proportion falls to 48 per cent among the clergy. The Anglican Church hasbeen brought to the brink of a schism over homosexuality, and the survey shows it to be at risk of further unrest. Fragmented Faith? Church Times . By Jan Jun
London, 25 February 2005 (RFE/RL) As the archbishops of the 38 worldwide districts of the Church of England ended their General Synod on 25 February, there was a sense of sadness.
A split in the church now seems inevitable. The divisive issues are the consecration of homosexual bishops and same-sex marriages, and few experts expect them to be resolved. William Rees-Mogg is former editor in chief of London's "The Times" newspaper and a member of Parliament's House of Lords. "I don't know how entrenched the positions are," he said, "but it sounds as though there is a complete split."

THE EPISCOPAL SUCCESSION OF THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND The documents given here are an attempt to chart the course of the Episcopal succession as it has been preserved in the Church of England. The 'successio sedis' or succession of Bishops in their dioceses has of course been published many times and is a matter of general knowledge (it is published, for example, in most editions of Crockford's Clerical Directory); this study however gives the 'successio manuum' or succession of consecrators, which I believe has nowhere before been set out in this form. The unbroken list of definite and historically verifiable consecrations begins in the ninth century. Before that date it is rare to find any record of a bishop's consecrator - contemporary documents, where they exist, may record only the bare fact that the consecration has taken place. This does not of course mean that there was no consecrator. Episcopal consecrations being major public events it is unthinkable that the rite could have ever been performed except by someone universally known to be competent to do so, that is, by a lawfully and validly ordained bishop; and, notwithstanding the occasional bishop who was elected but never consecrated, it is equally unthinkable that anyone could have embarked upon the actual exercise of episcopal orders without being known to have received them.

Anglican Church of England Will Allow Gay Clergy to “Marry” LONDON, May 30, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Since earlier this spring, the various member churches of the Worldwide Anglican Communion have been attempting to avoid a schism between two implacably opposed and hostile camps by postponing the decision on the ordination of homosexual clergy to their upcoming June international meetings. Meanwhile, the latest decision of the Anglican Church of England – the Communion’s mother church – has reached what may be the nadir of self-contradiction. The senior bishops of the Church of England, led by Rowan Williams, the Archbishop of Canterbury, have said that clergy can “marry” their boyfriends – and of course, the female clergy, can “marry” their girlfriends – if they promise to refrain from sexual activities with their “spouse.” In a decision that may go down in history as being the first to render Monty Python parodies redundant, Rowan Williams, offered this compromise as a solution to the problem created by a British law that recognizes same-sex unions for purposes of tax and inheritance benefits. The decision is part of the Anglican bishops’ draft Pastoral Statement on Civil Partnerships. The bishops also agreed to change ecclesiastical law to enable gay partners to occupy vicarages for up to two months after the death of their clergy ‘partners.’
