Early Modern Literary Studies http://purl.oclc.org/emls/02-2/halemil2.html By surveying Milton's use and non-use of certain biblical images, this essay records his loss of political innocence, and also something of his pluralism. In doing so, it shows in action his view of the relation between church and state. It charts his implied view of Isaiah Berlin's two concepts of libertynegative and positive, the absence of external constraints as opposed to spiritual fulfilment or self-realizationto conclude that Milton favours the first for the sake of the second. He drew the corollary, that freedom mattered last as well as first. He was, in short, a more consistent thinker than is often acknowledged. I move toward these conclusions rather gradually, for two reasons. First, it is worth illustrating from the writings and speeches of Milton's contemporaries how much more moderate Milton's political imagery from the Bible was than that of many with whom he shared political and religious commitments. The imagery needs substantial quotation for the reader to recognise its dynamism, and to accept that it was used extensively, not only by religious cranks and the weak-minded. The Tameside Battalion is one of the largest non-Diocesson Battalions in the Country (that is one that is part of a Regiment, in our case Manchester). It consists of five separate companies, Christ Church Ashton, Christ Church Denton, St Andrew's Droylsden, St Lawrence Denton and St Peter's Ashton. What Do These 'Companies' Do ? Each company is run on a local basis, but in all cases there is some element of Christian understanding. Almost all of the companies are actively involved with the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme, whilst the two Ashton and the two Denton companies all have bands which compete in various levels of competitions, in addition to which the Battalion Band, Tameside Bugle Corps, competes in open competitions, and takes part in parades and carnivals in the Greater Manchester area. There are strong sporting traditions within the Brigade, and members of all companies take part in local events, and can progress to National competitions held around the country.
