Christian Science church eyes cuts
Overhaul of Monitor, layoffs are discussed
By Donovan Slack, Globe Correspondent, 2/5/2004 Officials of the First Church of Christ, Scientist in Boston told employees yesterday that ailing finances are forcing them to restructure church operations, including laying off top-level managers, possibly ceasing production of some publications, moving others overseas, and overhauling operations at the Christian Science Monitor. ADVERTISEMENT "Overall contributions to the Mother Church have not kept pace with the demand," church treasurer Walter D. Jones said in a speech to employees at the church's headquarters on Huntington Avenue and broadcast to others over the Internet. "We must bring expenses in line." The church plans to review the operations of the printed edition of the Christian Science Monitor newspaper and may begin charging for subscriptions to the online version, according to church officials and an employee at the Monitor. The online edition records 4 million unique site visits per month, while the print edition, published five days a week, has about 70,000 subscribers. "What that suggests to me is a whole lot of people like what they get from the Christian Science Monitor, and those people are reading it online," Virginia S. Harris, chairwoman of the church's board of directors, said in an interview after yesterday's meeting. "We have to take a look at how people are getting their news and want to engage with Monitor journalism."

CHRISTIAN SCIENCE IN UTAH The Church of Christ, Scientist, founded in 1879 by Mary Baker Eddy "to reinstate primitive Christianity and its lost element of healing," has been in Utah for over a century. Its state history began in July 1891 when Mrs. Eddy sent one of her followers, Mrs. N. A. Bagley of Chicago, to Salt Lake City to organize a branch church. This led to the formation of the first Utah congregation, the present First Church of Christ, Scientist, Salt Lake City, incorporated on 27 August 1891. Mrs. Bagley returned to Chicago after the church was started. The small group initially met at various sites, including members' homes, the Odd Fellows Hall, and the Jewish synagogue. In 1897 the thirty-three local members voted to build their own church, located at 352 East 300 South. The Richardsonian Romanesque structure was planned by architect Walter E. Ware, who also designed the First Presbyterian Church, St. Mark's Hospital, the Old Masonic Temple, and many other structures in Salt Lake City. On Sunday, 27 November 1898, the new church was dedicated, according to church policy, free of debt. At least 1,000 people crowded into the church, which was designed for a seating capacity of 650. Christian Scientists from several nearby states traveled to Salt Lake City for the occasion. Services were opened by Mrs. Frank D. Kimball, acting First Reader in the absence of Lewis B. Coates, who was back east on church business with Mrs. Eddy. Mrs. Kimball read a letter from Mrs. Eddy praising the dedication of the Utah members. Thus began the thirty-second Christian Science branch church, which was restored in the 1970s and placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

OPINION from the October 24, 2000 edition Editor's note The Christian Science Monitor archive includes stories dating back to 1980. Some early articles lack sufficient formatting, and will appear as one long column without paragraph breaks. We apologize for the aesthetics and hope that the information will still be of value to you. Outsmarting suicide terrorists Ehud Sprinzak HERZLIYA, ISRAEL - The Oct. 12 bombing of the USS Cole is but the latest in a long list of major suicide attacks over the last two decades. From Chechnya to Sri Lanka to (apparently) Yemen, terrorists are embracing suicide bombing as their most deadly and horrifying strategy. But while most of the world sees suicide terrorists as lone, irrational zealots, they are, in fact, pawns in large terrorist networks that wage calculated psychological warfare. Contrary to popular belief, suicide bombers can be stopped - but only if security authorities pay more attention to their methods and motivations. Suicide terrorism has confounded governments since it made its modern debut on Oct. 23, 1983, when two explosions destroyed the barracks of the US and French contingents of the multinational peacekeeping force in Beirut, Lebanon, killing 241 American servicemen and 58 French paratroopers. Two centuries of experience had suggested that terrorists, though ready to risk their lives, wished to live after the terrorist act in order to benefit from its accomplishments. Suicide terrorism defies that belief. It seems almost supernatural, extremely lethal, and impossible to stop. The attack on the USS Cole, an 8,600-ton destroyer armed with missiles and torpedoes, only aggravates the sense of vulnerability.

Brouhaha on National School Testing Gail Russell Chaddock, Staff writer of The Christian Science Monitor WASHINGTON - Educators call it the "Lake Wobegon syndrome," a reference to Garrison Keillor's imagined homeland, where "all of the children are above average." Most American parents are being told by local schools that their children rank "above average" in both reading and math. Yet according to a national education survey released this weekend, 62 percent of fourth-graders have trouble reading and only 20 percent of eighth-graders have ever faced an algebraic equation.

Quotations:
" After religious teachers accomplish the refining process indicated, they will surely recognize with joy that true religion has been ennobled and made more profound by scientific knowledge. " Albert Einstein " There can never be a conflict between true science and true religion, because they both describe reality." Excerpt from a posting to a religious mailing list. " Science is almost totally incompatible with religion ." Peter Atkins. " The difference between faith and a conditional reliance on observation of the natural world is profound. It is the unresolvable difference between religion and science. " Mark Friesel
The relationship between science and religion:
Disagreements are seen in two main areas:
  • Active conflict between science and religion: There have been hundreds of disputes since the end of the 16th century in which scientists and theologians have taught opposing beliefs. At any given time, in recent centuries, there has been at least one active, major battle. Dozens are active at the present time. Probably the most keenly argued are currently: The nature of homosexual orientation : Is it sinful, chosen, changeable, unnatural and abnormal for everyone?, Or is it morally neutral, not chosen, fixed, natural and normal for a minority of people.
