    Prospect Christian Methodist Episcopal Church
Grand Junction, TN As provided by Ann Jenkins: There are no records available to show when Prospect Christian Methodist Episcopal Church was established. However, there is strong evidence to suggest that members were worshipping at Prospect Church during the early 1890's. One of the present members, Katherine Lake, recalls having heard her father, Sandy Horston, say that when he was 18 years old, and himself a member of Prospect Church, he was given a copy of a deed which conveyed to the trustees "a one and one-half acre graveyard site; and Prospect Colored M.E. Church lot on the west side of (what is now) Highway #18". This apparently occurred in about 1895. Indications are that until about 1910, Prospect Colored M.E. Church worshipped in a building on the site described by the deed. That building was also being used a school house and was called Prospect School. About 1910, the old building was destroyed by fire, and the membership soon thereafter began to plan for a new church. They felt that Prospect Church could grow and better serve the needs of the community, if the building could be relocated on a public road. Their wish was granted. They moved to a site about 1/2 mile from the original church site located on what was then the Grand Junction-Hickory Valley Road. The church was rebuilt and in 1912, the congregation began worshipping in its second building. Little is known as to who the pastors were, nor the church officials who administered Prospect Church, from its beginning in about 1890 to its relocation in about 1912. Indications are that in the very early days of the church a Rev. John Morgan and his wife Emmaline were responsible for much of the leadership. It is possible that Rev. Morgan may have served at some time as pastor of Prospect Church. Some other persons who are known to have served faithfully in the church during this period were: Jack Buntyn, John and Ann Buntyn, Henry and Ann Grayson, Andrew Goodall, Isom and Florence Lowe, Sandy Horston, Joe Moore, Joe O'Bannon, and Bill and Jennie Richardson.

Church The African Methodist Episcopal Church; an important denomination for African-Americans, founded in 1816 by the ex-slave and preacher Richard Allen. It is noted for education and philanthropy in the black community. An offshoot is the C.M.E. (Christian Methodist Episcopal) Church.
    American History
A.m.e. Church Stirred into action by the Great Awakening of the 1740s, white evangelical Protestants began proselytizing black Americans. The most successful of these were the Methodists. Their program of systematic evangelism and their emphasis on a "near" rather than "distant" God, self-help, liberation from sin through conversion, and lively preaching and singingalong with John Wesley's denunciations of the evils of slaveryproved tremendously effective in attracting converts among slaves and free people of color. By the time of the Revolution, blacks formed substantial minorities in congregations in Philadelphia, Baltimore, and New York, and a majority in Charleston. But given the contradiction between the Methodist gospel of a Christianity transcending race and class, and the prejudices among white adherents against black people, tensions soon developed.

History of the Christian Methodist Episcopal (CME) Church
If you have information on the history of a historic CME church or Conference or significant historical events of interest to CME members, please e-mail specifics. (Don't send just a list of your church's pastors and dates when you changed locations.) It was Thursday morning. The black preacher rose from his prayers. He went outside and saddled his horse for the familiar ride into town. That morning his soul was filled with eager anticipation. He would not, as he had on so many other occasions, guide his horse to Liberty Street where the Colored church was located. Rather, he would head toward 2nd Street to the white church. On that day, the preacher was on his way to join 40 other African American men representing eight Annual Conferences of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. They were coming to establish their own church. The town was Jackson, Tennessee. The date was December 15. The year was 1870. That evening they devoted themselves to prayer and commitment to God. The next day they organized the Colored Methodist Episcopal Church in America the CME Church. The preacher was Isaac Lane. Slavery Lane and those who gathered with him had been slaves. Indeed it had been scarcely five years since the Civil War had set them free. Slavery was the forcible capture of Africans in their native land, their horrible voyage across the Atlantic to America, and their servile status and inhumane treatment as chattel property (the same as horses, cattle, furniture, etc.) It began with twenty slaves brought to Jamestown, Virginia in 1619 as indentured servants. (Indentured servants were people, often Europeans, who agreed to work for seven years in exchange for passage to America.) It ended with Lee's surrender to Grant in 1865. For more than 250 years slaves provided the labor on the cotton plantations, tobacco farms, cane brakes, and rice paddies of the South. More than 20 million Africans were bought and sold as American slaves. At the beginning of the Civil War, there were almost 4 million slaves in America.
