Families of Christian D enominations in North America:
Today, there are many ways of classifying the over 1,500 Christian faith groups in North America: Into three or four meta-groups (e.g. Roman Catholic, Orthodox, Protestant, Anglican), By "wing" (e.g. conservative, mainline, and liberal), By denomination (From the Amish to The Way) By theological belief system (Calvinism, Arminianism, etc.), and By religious family , (Baptist, Lutheran, Pentecostal, etc.) This section describes how most denominations can be sorted into 15 families, according to their historical roots. We have largely patterned the following list of Christian families of denominations after the work of J Gordon Melton , the editor of the Encyclopedia of American Religions It is one of many possible ways of sorting individual denominations.

Overview:
Most Christian denominations, sects, and new religious movement have stated policies towards gays and lesbians: Whether to allow known, sexually active homosexuals to: become and remain church members with full privileges. be considered for ordination hold other positions of power. Whether to allow known celibate homosexuals to: become and remain church members with full privileges. be considered for ordination hold other positions of power. Whether to provide a formal religious ceremony for committed gay and lesbian couples. These are variously called union, civil union, commitment or marriage ceremonies. Whether to have an active study program to reduce homophobia within the denomination. There is no consensus within Christianity about: The nature of homosexuality What the Bible says about homosexuality, or What policies to enforce about gay and lesbian members, candidates for ordination. commitment rituals or study programs. The response of Christian faith groups to homosexuality varies greatly, depending upon their position in the liberal - fundamentalist continuum. More liberal denominations and Christians tend to view homosexuality as a civil rights matter; they generally believe it is fixed, unchosen, normal, natural, and morally neutral

List of Christian denominations
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
List of Christian denominations (or Denominations self-identified as Christian ) ordered by historical and doctrinal relationships. (See also: Christianity Christian denominations Some denominations are large (eg. Roman Catholic Lutherans Anglicans or Baptists ) while others are just a few small churches, and in most cases the relative size is not evident in this list. Also, modern movements such as Fundamentalist Christianity Pietism Evangelicalism Pentecostalism and the Holiness movement sometimes cross denominational lines, or in some cases create new denominations out of two or more continuing groups (as is the case for many United / Uniting churches , for example). Such subtleties and complexities are not clearly depicted here. This is not a complete list, but aims to provide a comprehensible overview of the diversity that exists among denominations of Christianity, whose branches are collectively referred to as Christendom . Some links may point to non-existent articles. There are approximately 250+ branches listed here. Between denominations, theologians and comparative religionists, there are considerable disagreements about which groups can be properly called Christian denominations. These disagreements rise primarily from doctrinal differences between different groups. For the purpose of simplicity, this list is intended to reflect the self-understanding of each denomination. Explanations about different opinions concerning their statuses as Christian denominations can be found at their respective articles.

    • The First Ecumenical council of Nicaea was called by emperor Constantine. The council met to deal with the schism created by Arianism. The Arians wished to avoid the heresy of Sabellius who believed in a divine monad which, by expansion, projected itself as Father, Son and Holy Spirita form of Modalism. The Arians separated the Son from God entirely so that they believed he was a creature having a beginning. "There was when he was not." The Son was but God's first creation, yet out of nothing and hence has preeminence over the rest of creation. The symbol answers the question, "Who is Jesus Christ."

Introductory thoughts:
What is religion? There are many definitions for the term "religion" in common usage. On this web site, we define it very broadly, in order to include the greatest number of belief systems: "Religion is any specific system of belief about deity, often involving rituals, a code of ethics, and a philosophy of life." Thus we include here all of the great monotheistic religions, Eastern religions; Neopagan religions; a wide range of other faith groups, spiritual paths, and ethical systems; and beliefs about the existence of God(s) and Goddess(es). We recognize that most people define " religion " in a much more exclusive manner. Christianity There are many definitions for this term as well . Again, we use an inclusive definition: "
