Nanhua Temple's Application for World Cultural Heritage Listing Supported Nanhua Temple is a famous ancient Chan Buddhist temple, acknowledged as the ancestral home of the religion in China. Buddha Huineng first introduced Chan sect of Buddhism here. In November 2002, Nanhua Temple celebrated its 1,500th anniversary since foundation. Many Buddhists and experts acknowledge that Nanhua Temple has a special cultural significance, a typical temple architectural style and an abundance of rare historical relics, including Altar Sutra , buildings, sculptures, gardens and tablet inscriptions. It meets the requirements of World Cultural Heritage in terms of history, culture, science, and artistic value, and is therefore qualified to apply for listing. The Special Cultural Significance Nanhua Temple was founded in 502 AD by an Indian monk. The religious group has branches in many countries throughout Southeast Asia, Europe and America, and also in India, the cradle of Buddhism. It was among the first group of key temples acknowledged by the State Council, China’s cabinet, in 1983, and was designated as one of “China's key cultural relics for state protection” by the State Council in July 2001.

What is Chan?
"Chan is the practise of liviing wisely and experiencing a blissful life."
"Chan is not the same as knowledge, yet knowledge is not completely apart from Chan. Chan is not just religion, yet the achievements of religion can be reached through Chan. Chan is not philosophy, yet philosophy can in no way exceed the scope of Chan. Chan is not science, yet spirit of emphasising reality and experience is also required in Chan."
- Ven Sheng Yen Chan is everywhere, in space without limit and time without end. Chan exists universally and eternally. There is no need for any teacher to transmit it; what is transmitted is just the method by which one can personally experience Chan. In China, the Chan school developed from Indian Dhyana Buddhism, which taught methods of meditative concentration aimed at the attainment of an absorbed, concentrated state of mind. This school later spread to other countries from China, and is called Zen in Japan, Son in Korea, and Thien in Vietnam. Chan starts with gaining through knowledge of one's own self. Through letting go of all attachments and giving rise to wisdom, our mind can regain its luminosity. We call this knowledge of the notion of self "enlightenment" or "seeing one's self-nature." This is the beginning of helping yourself to thoroughly solve real problems. In the end, you will discover that you as an individual, together with whole of existence, are but one indivisible totality.

is a Buddhist community that has existed in Croatia for a number of years. It follows the Sino-Japanese Mahayana Buddhist tradition, primarily Chinese Chan (Zen). The community is a member of the European Buddhist Union, an organization that brings together the majority of Buddhist Centers and associations in Europe. It is also a member or several Buddhist organizations, centers and temples in the East. Since 1991, the community has issued a quarterly journal of Buddhist studies. In 1992 it established the first Buddhist center in Croatia. The community has its branches in Slovenia and Germany. The Spiritual Advisor of the community is Shih-fu Sheng-yen , who is considered to be one of the greatest living masters of Buddhism. Master Sheng-Yen was born near Shanghai in 1930, and left his home to become a monk at the age of thirteen.
During the period of Communist unrest, he fled to southern Taiwan where he continued his study and practice, and spent six years in solitary retreat.
