NATIVE TONGUES
To judge by some of the recent correspondence in the pages of Keltria, there is a quite a bit of disagreement among us on the value of learning Celtic languages and the relation of Celtic tradition to living Celtic communities. Much of the disagreement, I think, stems from differing degrees of awareness of the relationship between language and culture. There are some (cf., for instance, Pat Taylor’s “Druids : Who Are We?” in the Samhain issue) who seem to suggest that the only reason one would want to study Celtic languages is to provide some kind of purely decorative “authenticity” to our rituals. “Ancient” gods want to be addressed in an “ancient” language so we
might want to preserve such languages, but for liturgical purposes only. Of course, this is a rather flimsy premise (and if we wanted to apply it seriously in a Celtic context, we would have to do rituals in Old Celtic, not in any extant form of Irish!), and Pat Taylor rightly shows us its limitations. However, she maintains an opposition between Celtic languages as “ancient” and English as “modern”. Apart from being hair-raisingly insulting to modern Celtic-speakers, this view of the relationship between Celtic and English is clearly based on insufficient knowledge : it can be maintained only by those who know nothing (or very little) of the Celtic-speaking world.
To those of us who speak Celtic languages, English is not the “modern” vehicle of Celtic culture; it is the language of Anglo-American culture, which is completely different from and, in some ways, inimical to Celtic culture. English-speakers conquered Celtic-speakers, crippled their self-

An Introductory FAQ
for the alt.religion.druid Newsgroup
This FAQ is the creation of Elaine Stutt and is being hosted on the Summerlands as a service to all who use the alt.religion.druid newsgroup. It was first posted Oct.7 '98. The website urls were checked as to being operable Jan. 8 - 10, 2000. E. This is an introductory FAQ for alt.religion.druid. A.r.d hived off of alt.pagan, alt.religion.wicca, etc. in the Fall of 1995. It is for discussion about: Druids; Druidry/Druidism; Celtic cultures, history, religion and spirituality. Note that some, who are interested in Brehon Law and Druids as leaders of Celtic society, are only faintly interested in Celtic spirituality; for others it's just the opposite. I'm Elaine and I've followed a.r.d almost since it's inception. Because I wrote this FAQ, it necessarily reflects my interests and biases. However, my aim was neither to give my opinions, nor to give academic definitions but rather to show the range of knowledge and opinion on a.r.d. Thanks to all those who post on a.r.d for their information, opinions and websites. 1. Where can I find information?

Harry Potter, Witchcraft and the First Amendment
September 18, 2000
Is it a harmless promotion to encourage youngsters to read? Or does it violate the separation of church and state by stimulating an interest in occult themes and pagan religion? In Florida, parents have objected to a library program that presented youngsters with certificates for reading the wildly popular Harry Potter series by author J.K. Rowling . A Christian legal interest group, Liberty Counsel, became involved in the controversy and charged that the promotion actually violated the separation of church and state. Before dismissing such a charge, though, it may be worth mulling a few facts. Increasingly, followers of pagan belief systems have sought various forms of legal protection and recognition. In the summer of 1999, Rep. Bob Barr objected to the presence of an organized circle of witches who happened to be members of the U.S. military at Fort Hood, Texas . New York parents objected last year to school programs that invited a psychic and a ministers of the Sikh religion to classes to conduct yoga sessions. Children were also allegedly required to make sculptures of Aztec and Hindu deities How would Atheists react if schools invited fundamentalist preachers into the classroom? Would libraries be violating the separation of church and state if they presented children with recognition certificates for, say, reading the Bible or Koran? Are books with fantastic or occult themes to be considered a form of religious proselytizing?
