AT AVALON GROVE
The spiritual teachings which follow were given to us directly by a Celtic people who are thousands of years old. They are known by many names, but are referred to most commonly as the Tuatha De Danaan, the Sidhe, the Fair Folk, or the Faerie tribes. They live today as they have lived for thousands of years, in a land known as Tir na n'Og, the original Garden of Eden.

Please see discussion on the talk page Celtic Christianity is Christianity as it was first received and practised by communities with Celtic backgrounds that observed certain practices divergent from those in the rest of Europe. The conversion of pagan Britain was brought about by two very different missions; one, led by Augustine of Canterbury , from Rome that landed in Kent in AD , and the other from the Celtic Church, led by Columba , who went from Ireland to Iona Scotland . Priests from Iona led the Christianisation of Northumbria and later Mercia . This term is also used to indicate a modern movement espousing the goal of recovering what it believes was the distinctive spirit of the earlier group.

Celtic Christianity
The latest Christian fad...a significant rediscovery...New Age thinking invading the church...everyone has an opinion on the awakening interest in Celtic Christian spirituality.
I've always been interested in church history - it seems to me we can learn a lot about the present, and perhaps the future, by examining the experiences of Christians who lived for Jesus in the past. About nine years ago I was thinking about how Christianity needs to find expression within each culture, and that got me thinking about whether there had ever been a distinctive British form of Christianity. At the same time, I was also thinking about ways to communicate the unchanging Gospel in our rapidly changing, post-modern, post- Christian culture.
I looked at the origins of Christianity in Britain, during the Roman occupation and the so called Dark Ages, a time of great change and uncertainty not unlike today.
The stories of the men and women who brought Christianity to Britain, and an examination of the way they lived struck a chord with me. It challenged me to examine my own faith and spirituality afresh.
On this site I have tried to outline some of my personal discoveries, in the hope that they may be of use to others who are seeking to travel this "ancient path".

Here is a paper summarizing this researcher's work in identifying and deciphering the Vin a Script. This script was used in the Balkans in the fifth millennium BCE and represents the first attested writing, well before the developments in Sumer. It also reconstructs the first sentence (found to date) ever written: The Bear Goddess and the Bird Goddess are the Bear Goddess indeed . The paper is an outgrowth of several articles (see publications ) as well as guest lectures at The Citadel and Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. It is in Adobe Acrobat (PDF) format within a ZIP file.

What is Celtic Christianity? Andrew Dunn
The interest today in Celtic spirituality is huge. Whether it is in the art, music, saleable handcrafts, or books about it, or in the growth of modern Celtic communities and retreats, this ancient way of describing how to be Christian, and how to relate to God, God's creation, God's word and God's people, is attracting attention.
"The rediscovery of the Celtic world has been an extraordinary revelation for many Christians in recent years, an opening up of the depths and riches within our own tradition which many of us had not before suspected", writes Esther de Waal in Wales. The breadth of the interest in Celtic spirituality is surprising. People across the theological spectrum find elements in Celtic Christianity that attract them. Liberal Christians find the emphasis on the love of God and inclusiveness irresistible. Conservatives discover in Celtic spirituality a theological and biblical orthodoxy that gives them certainty about its aims and roots, and enables them to explore its spiritual offerings with confidence. Those involved with Creation spirituality, along with green and eco-sensitive believers, delight in the Celtic honouring of creation as God's Second Book. Feminists find the gender equality in leadership honours their discoveries. Earth-centred Christians delight in the maternal principle of the early Celtic cradling which gave women a prominent place in society, mission centres and church.

The Celtic church has many lessons to teach the contemporary Church. The early Celtic Christian church was catholic and apostolic in nature, fiercely independent, in tune with creation, yet remaining committed to Scripture and tradition. It drew on the positive aspects of the earlier druidic religion yet remained true to the Faith and thereby was able to transform Celtic society without destroying it. I would like the Anglican Communion to model the ancient Celtic church: catholic and apostolic in nature, resisting of overburdening and corrupting hierarchy and structure, in tune with the created world, remaining committed to Scripture and tradition, and finally acting as a powerful transforming agent to Western society. Some general introductions to Celtic Christianity follow.

by the Reverend Monk Dr. Gorazd
Related Articles Father Gorazd (Vorpatrny), a graduate of Holy Trinity Seminary in Jordanville, New York, completed his M.A. and doctoral degrees in theology at the Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic, where he is Senior Lecturer in Orthodox Studies at the Hussite Faculty of Theology. In 1996, the Charles University, the oldest university in Central Europe and the most prestigious educational institution in the Czech Republic, awarded Father Gorazd the B. Bolzano Prize for his Masters thesis, written on the Orthodox Church in Czechoslovakia from 1945-1951. THE ANCIENT CELTIC CHURCH had intimate ties with the same Desert Fathers of Egypt, Syria, and Palestine who fostered the ascetic literature and monasticism of the Byzantine and Slavic Orthodox Churches. This essay attempts to elucidate Celtic Christian spirituality and monasticism in the light of Orthodox Christian monastic and ascetic tradition. Specific points are illustrated with salient examples drawn from the Celtic Saints, the ancient Christian East and, for a perspective closer to our own times, from nineteenth-century Russian Orthodox monasticism, along with commentary from contemporary Orthodox writers. These flourishings of monastic sanctity, separated by great distances in space and time, manifest a deep internal kinship and harmony.

40. Introduction To Celtic Christianity - By Caedmon Greene
Christian revival network , prayer, Ezines, news and interactive forums.
http://www.openheaven.com/library/celtic/traditions.htm
Introduction to Celtic Christianity - by Caedmon Greene Celtic Christianity was characterised by extreme holiness, a love of God and man, and wanderlust from the need to bring the light of Christ to the world. Also, many of the issues that the Celtic Christians dealt with are amazingly contemporary - things like the position of women in the Church, nature and our environmental surroundings, and dealing with others of different customs and beliefs (both pagan and Christian). Much of its attraction comes from how it dealt with these problems, taking the best from older traditions while still standing firm in the truth. Tradition holds that the faith was brought to the British Isles by Joseph of Arimathea and Aristobulus in A.D. 55 (some argue it was as early as A.D. 35) [Some] modern scholarship rejects this, and place the introduction in the middle of the second century. Little is known of the first several centuries, however, Christianity was firmly established in Roman Britain by the time of the council of Arles (314) as two British bishops were in attendance. (There is also a possibility that British bishops were at Nicaea).
