61. In Defense Of The Roman Catholic Church
Explaining catholicism to Protestants as well as Catholics, defending the Church's teaching with appeals to Scripture and reason.

"I would not believe the Gospel unless moved thereto by the Church."
- St. Augustine of Hippo
Site updated Sunday April 24, 2005
Introduction
This web site was developed mainly for non-Catholic Christians, but is also for Catholics who want to explain their faith to Protestants and non-Christians. Most often, this "defense" is against "Bible" Christians and Fundamentalist Christians. Since the majority of non-Catholic Christians incorrectly believe the Holy Bible is the sole or final authority for Christian beliefs ( Sola Scriptura ), this web site will explain Catholic beliefs in reference to the Holy Bible. In addition, the doctrine of the Catholic Church is explained by what is NOT stated in the Bible and what is just plain God-given "common sense." In addition, quotes from the "Catechism of the Catholic Church," "The Early Church Fathers" and "The Doctors of the Church" are cited.
This web site will help you learn and prove that there is a Biblical basis in even the most controversial issues that the Mother Church has taken a stand on.
I am not a theologian or a priest. I do not even have a Bachelor's Degree in any field. However, I do have an Associate's Degree in History. I have studied Church history and I am a person who strongly believes in the unity of Christianity and the Holy Catholic Church. Also, I am gravely concerned with the current "immoral" trends of both Protestants and Catholics alike.

  • The Founding:
The apostles of Jesus Christ formed the beginnings of the Christian Church. They helped spread the Gospel and provided structure for the early Church. It is hard to differentiate the beginnings of the Roman Catholic church from that of the early Christian church. The apostle, Peter, also known as Simon, was of central importance. The Church was organized and presided over by Peter. According to the Scriptures, Matthew 16:13- 19, Christ said to Peter: "And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church." In 313, the Roman Catholic Church was legally recognized by the Roman Emperor Constantine, and, in 380 it became the official religion of the Roman Empire.

About this site The Dispute: Overviews The Dispute: Specifics Gateways and Official Websites ... Other Welcome to Orthodoxy and Catholicism: A Comprehensive Guide to Issues and Materials. On this site I have attempted to bring together all the material I could find about relations between the Catholic and Orthodox churches. You will find overviews of all the issues that separate the two sides, church documents, discussion groups, news and so forth. There are currently over 200 links I have tried to be impartial in every way I can think of. My occasional topic introductions attempt to reproduce what a committee of well-meaning experts from both sides would agree to. In describing the links I have aimed to keep my religious opinions separate from my duty to find and describe the material. Occasionally I describe something as "poorly-written" or "tedious"; these are not religious mistakes. Very occasionally I describe someting as "biased," when, for example, an author says that the other side believes something that no member of that side would agree to. I am not opposed to vigorous disagreement. I have, I am sure, missed important pages and made factual mistakes, particularly in categorization. Email and I will amend.

Avery Cardinal Dulles Among the major nations of the Western world, the United States is singular in still having the death penalty. After a five–year moratorium, from 1972 to 1977, capital punishment was reinstated in the United States courts. Objections to the practice have come from many quarters, including the American Catholic bishops, who have rather consistently opposed the death penalty. The National Conference of Catholic Bishops in 1980 published a predominantly negative statement on capital punishment, approved by a majority vote of those present though not by the required two–thirds majority of the entire conference. Pope John Paul II has at various times expressed his opposition to the practice, as have other Catholic leaders in Europe. Some Catholics, going beyond the bishops and the Pope, maintain that the death penalty, like abortion and euthanasia, is a violation of the right to life and an unauthorized usurpation by human beings of God’s sole lordship over life and death. Did not the Declaration of Independence, they ask, describe the right to life as “unalienable”? While sociological and legal questions inevitably impinge upon any such reflection, I am here addressing the subject as a theologian. At this level the question has to be answered primarily in terms of revelation, as it comes to us through Scripture and tradition, interpreted with the guidance of the ecclesiastical magisterium.

Brief about Opus Dei Opus Dei, Latin for the Work of God, is in essence a vicious, wealthy, powerful, secretive, elitist and dangerous cult deeply embedded in the heart of the Roman Catholic Church. It seeks new recruits throughout the Church using a number of sophisticated and highly developed psychological cultic mind-control techniques. Opus Dei is one of the most organized and effective intelligence gathering operations in the world. They create and maintain intelligence dossiers on their own members, potential recruits, Catholic Church leaders, political/business people and real/perceived enemies.
    Sources: www.odan.org, www.oss.net
History and Structure Opus Dei was founded in 1928 by a Spanish priest named Josemaria Escrvia. It was named the first secular institute in 1950 and as a personal prelature in 1982. As a personal prelature, Opus Dei can operate in any Catholic Diocese in the world without control, oversight or the permission of the local Bishop. It is responsible to the Pope alone. Escriva, the founder, was beatified in 1992 and canonized in 2002. Occuring 27 years after his death, it was the fastest canonization in the history of the Catholic Church. Ever since its founding, Opus Dei has been a source of controversy and tension within the Catholic Church and the societies it operates within.

See also Popes Gnosticism Inquisition Heresy ... Relics The Roman Catholic Church claims to be the official keeper of the teachings and traditions of Jesus Christ This in itself is not surprising. Virtually every religion claims it has exclusive access to the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. What's really impressive is the massively complicated structure of beliefs piled on top of this simple claim, many of which have next to nothing to do with anything Jesus taught. Catholics believe their religion is directly descended from Christ, via St. Peter, the apostle Jesus allegedly called "the rock (on which) I shall build my church." Early Christianity was a mishmash of different beliefs, espoused by various charismatic figures. Although records are sparse , we know the names of a few influential early Christian teachers — including the apostles Peter, Paul and James, and other figures who were later dismissed as heretics , including gospel writers using the names of the Apostle Thomas and Jesus's pal Mary Magdalene From what little evidence survives, we can infer that there were several distinctly different sects of Christianity during the first decades after Christ's death. The two most powerful, as best anyone can determine, were the Jerusalem Church and the Roman Church.

Why " Roman Catholic " instead of " Catholic "?
We use the phrase " Roman Catholic " in place of " Catholic " to avoid confusion. Most Christian faith groups acknowledge the Nicene Creed and thus regard themselves as "Catholic," at least as far as being part of the " catholic and apostolic church ." Within any one given faith group, the meaning of the term " Catholic " is relatively clear. But our site deals with all Christian denominations and all other religions. To assure clarity and to avoid ambiguity, we use the term " Roman Catholic " when referring to the church headed by the pope in Rome. We use similar terms (e.g. Evangelical Catholic, Anglo-Catholic) when referring to some other faith groups. We often use the abbreviation RCC to refer to the Roman Catholic Church. This saves wear and tear on your eyeballs and on our fingers.

    Overview:
This essay compares Roman Catholicism with the conservative wing of Protestantism. In the 16th century, during the Protestant Reformation, many faith groups split away from the Roman Catholic Church . This destroyed the relative unity of Christendom in western Europe. The Protestant movement further fragmented during the following centuries. At the present time, there are over a thousand Christian denominations in North America alone, in addition to many thousands of independent, unaffiliated congregations. Although there are many mainline and liberal Protestant faith groups, most are conservative in nature. The beliefs of both the Roman Catholic church and conservative Protestant denominations are in a state of gradual change. Examples of this are: The acceptance of the theory of evolution by the Catholic church, and the continuing rejection by most conservative Protestants. The acceptance of homosexual sexual orientation but not same-sex behavior as morally neutral by the Catholic Church, but not by many conservative Protestants.

    The Hopefulness of St. Augustine
When you read the lives of Saints, it is often striking how holy they were – even from a young age. These men radiated holiness and likely never committed a mortal sin. So the question is: can I, considering my past, still become a Saint? The answer is Saint Augustine. A man who lived an extremely sinful life, but suddenly turned it around and became one of the greatest Saints. St. Augustine, as Jesus asked, was never lukewarm, but always either hot or cold. He did have much passion, which drove him to holiness once he had decided that God and the Catholic Church were real. His transformation is explained in detail in his Confessions and he inspires us all to do the same. We too, like Augustine, can become the faithful followers of Christ that go directly to heaven. We must just decide to do so as we pray often and try hard.
