The purpose of Cai Dai Kung-Fu is to teach you to get that arsenal fully armed. While there may be beauty in a perfectly performed martial-arts session, "art" takes a back seat to "martial" in a life and death struggle. Vietnam's Cao Dai Great Temple
Among the strangest belief systems on the face of the earth is the nationalistic syncretism of Vietnam's Cao Dai (pronounced "Cow Die") sect. It didn't exist a century ago. It is a cross between Buddhism, Christianity, Confucianism, and a few other religions. Today visitors to the Great Temple, Tay Ninh Cao Dai Cathedral in Tay Ninh (about 60 miles northwest of Ho Chi Minh City), can watch the chanting ceremony take place four times a day. 96. Cao Dai Temples In Viet Nam
More on the Cao Ðài religion can be found at http//www.caodai.net/. Google ifyou’re really interested. Meanwhile, I’m inordinately pleased to have a copy
    http://www.pauahtun.org/Exile/CaoDai.html
The Cao Đ i in Việt Nam
In 1970, I saw several Cao Đ i temples, but this is the only one I have an actual picture of.
Taken in August of 1970 (the white banner in the foreground has a date, 30 August 1970). The main Cao Đ i temple is in T¢y Ninh, twenty or thirty miles from Củ Chi. One day, in 1970, Sgt. Scanlon and I drove out to deliver some dispatches to the 369th Signal Battalion, Company B detachment in T¢y Ninh. When we were done, Scanlon said, “Wanta drive over and see the Cao Đ i temple?” “Sure,” I said, having read Frederik Pohl’s 1957 Slave Ship many years before. It was my main source for Cao Đ i information for years; I reread it this year on the Third Annual Sage College Learning and Reconciliation Tour. Since I knew we were going to the Temple, I had no choice. Fred is not only a very famous SF writer (check out the Heechee series, beginning with Gateway ), he’s a hell of a nice guy to boot. He once rejected a story of mine by beginning the letter, “For the first few pages of [name of terrible story excised] I really thought I had a winner.” He used to chain smoke so heavily that even with filtered cigarettes his fingers were stained yellow from nicotine. The last time I saw him was in 1977, at SunCon in Miami, Florida. A plot summary for Slave Ship , culled from a French site and translated by Babelfish, reads, “Space will opera strange where the animals, become erudite, enter in direct competition with Humanity,” which is more than a little surreal. Not to mention counterfactual.

nav_buttons( "header", "narrative", "Friday, November 24, 2000", "trip_dalat_saigon.htm", "photos_cao_dai_temple.htm", "city_saigon.htm"); That morning we all met for breakfast at Pho Hoa, a famous pho restaurant in Saigon on Pasteur Street. This was something of a pilgrimage for me. My first real introduction to Vietnamese food was at a restaurant in New York called Pho Pasteur. These restaurants hang newspaper clippings so you can see how wonderful they are, and I remember the clipping from New York Newsday . It said that the odd-sounding name of "Pho Pasteur" was taken from Pasteur Street in Hanoi. Now I knew better. It just goes to show that you shouldn't trust food critics. Most of the time they don't know their stuff. The pho here was different from the pho that they have in Hanoi, and the same style as the pho The first stop was the Cao Dai Great Temple in Tay Ninh, about 26 kilometers from the Cambodian border. CaoDaism has some of the characteristics of an established religion and some of the characteristics of a cult. It was founded in Vietnam in 1926 by Ngo Van Chieu, a government official who had a vision that heralded the Third Age of spirituality. Today there are three million followers. The Cao Dai religion takes parts from Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism, Christianity and Islam. In a nutshell, Cao Dai is the third link in a chain that started with Confucius, Buddha and Lao Tse. The next age had Jesus and Mohammed. The message from these divine intermediaries was garbled because of human frailty, and hence the need for repeated visits. Cao Dai followers believe that divine messages are revealed through cultural figures, who can be contacted directly through seances held in Vietnamese, French or English. The mural at the entrance to the Cao Dai Temple shows the signature of the "Third Alliance Between God and Man". The signatories are Sun Yat Sen, Nguyen Binh Khiem (a Vietnamese poet) and Victor Hugo. Victor Hugo is a popular figure in CaoDaism, and is contacted frequently.
