    A Cao Dai temple, Vietnam
Buddhism, Taoism, Christianity, Hinduism Confucianism and Islam. It is based in the province of Tay Ninh, an hour away from Cu Chi and it currently has 7 to 8 million followers in Vietnam and 30,000 around the world. "Cao Dai” is a metaphor for spiritual growth and literally translates as “high tower” or “palace”. Its followers believe that God was concerned that the multiplicity of religions prevented people from living together in harmony and so gave a third revelation through a spirit called Duc Cao Dai. This revelation grew into Caodaism. Its central philosophy is similar to Confucianism , concerned with how the individual functions within society. The follower has a duty towards themselves, their family, the community and the world as a whole. They must not kill, be dishonest, commit adultery, get drunk or sin by word. Similar to Christianity and Islam, believers worship only one God but they also look to numerous superior spirits for guidance.

    Among the Cao Dai
by Lucretia Stewart The Great Divine Temple has to be one of the strangest buildings in the world. I started off thinking that it was unbelievably hideous but, after three days, I began to see a strange beauty in it. In a small, octagonal pavilion, a group of elderly woman dressed in long, white robes are arranging their hair. It has to be very smooth, not a hair out of place, and twisted into a neat, round bun at the nape of the neck. Some of them also cover their heads with a piece of white cotton, wrapping the bun so that it is concealed and securing the whole thing with a large jewelled hairpin in the shape of a lotus. They do this four times a day - at dawn, at midday, at dusk and at midnight - and, when they are dressed and coiffed to their satisfaction, they make their way to the Great Divine Temple of the Cao Dai. The women with the hairpins, even though they all appear to be at least sixty years old, are student priestesses of the Cao Dai. The ones with bare heads are followers.
From a long, low building on the other side of the temple come a number of very old men. Some are wearing yellow robes, others sky-blue and yet others scarlet. Those with little, round, coloured caps are bishops or even archbishops. Those with tall, winged headdresses are student priests. The man wearing a mitre is a, or possibly the, principal archbishop.

The Cao Dai religion was founded by Ngo Van Chieu in the 1920s in Vietnam; it is an indigenous Vietnamese religion. Chieu had been a Taoist whose vision of the Jade Emperor, or Cao Dai (the Supreme Palace or Being) led him to combine concepts from a variety of Eastern and Western doctrines. (Cao Dai is translated as high tower or palace, a metaphor for spiritual growth.) This religion venerates a number of prophets such as Lao-tzu, Confucius, Buddha, Muhammad, and Jesus. Some of its rituals are derived from Buddhism, as well as the idea of escaping cycles of rebirth. The use of mediums to communicate with the other world derives from Taoism. The priesthood is patterned after Catholicism. The structure and plan of the churches resemble Christian basilicas. After 1975, the practice of this religion was suppressed; it was legalized again in 1985. The religion has more than two million followers and is headquartered in Tay Ninh province near the Cambodian border.

The Cao Dai In Tay Ninh
As part of our trip to South Vietnam last month, we had a chance to go observe the Cao Dai worshippers at a town called Tay Ninh about 1.5 hours from Ho Chi Minh City.
Cao Daism (the belief of the Cao Dai religion) is the concept of a "Single Unifying Religion" and is a unique eclectic cocktail of fragments of Chritianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, Taoism, Confusionism, and a sprinkling of Animism ALL IN ONE under a single Flag Of The One Nameless Divinity! No conflict, no discussion, no disagreements, no differences......not a bad concept academically.
I shall take a quote on the Principals of the Cao Dai religion from their website - http://www.caodai.org/
QUOTE - Cao Dai is a universal faith with the principle that all religions have one same divine origin, which is God, or Allah, or the Tao, or the Nothingness, one same ethic based on LOVE and JUSTICE, and are just different manifestations of one same TRUTH."
"The noble effort of Cao Dai is to unite all of humanity through a common vision of the Supreme Being, whatever our minor differences, in order to promote peace and understanding throughout the world. Cao Dai does not seek to create a gray world, where all religions are exactly the same, only to create a more tolerant world, where all can see each other as sisters and brothers from a common divine source reaching out to a common divine destiny realizing peace within and without. - UNQUOTE

    Cao Dai Holy Temple
Cao Dai is a very intriguing religion. It mixes Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism and Confusianism (a kind of 'best of'!) and consults people like Shakespeare through seanses. Here, we visited a ceremony in their holiest church.
If you're American, this Cao Dai symbol is probably very familiar. (For those of you who aren't, check out a one-dollar-bill.)
Cao Dai priests: the ones in red specialize in Islam, the ones in blue specialize in Christianity and the ones in yellow specialize in Buddhism.
