: Miss Hong is having a vision. As we sat together in this room, the spirit moved into her body, she says, suddenly and unexpectedly.
(to Miss Hong): Who were you talking to? Miss HONG (Cao Dai Disciple): My father and also mother from above. SEVERSON : Miss Hong is a disciple of a Vietnamese-founded religion called Cao Dai, which means "above on high where God reigns." The church's home and main temple is located a couple hours north of Saigon, in a province called Tay Nynh. There are eyes throughout the massive temple that stare down, unblinkingly. The eye symbolizes God as He appeared in the first vision establishing the Cao Dai faith in 1926. It's also the way He appeared in a vision to Ngasha Beck in 1993. She says it was when she first heard of Cao Daism. NGASHA BECK (Co-Author, CAO DAI: FAITH OF UNITY): The vision I had of the Divine Eye filled my entire visual field and it came rushing toward me and washed over me and there was a very loud sound at the time. So it, it involved my whole being and it was very intense and that's why, I guess, it was to get my attention enough so that I would do something about it.

Cao Dai draws upon ethical precepts from Confucianism, occult practices from Taoism, theories of karma and rebirth from Buddhism, and a hierarchical organization (including a pope) from Roman Catholicism. Its pantheon of saints includes such diverse figures as the Buddha, Confucius, Jesus Christ, Mu h ammad, Pericles, Julius Caesar, Joan of Arc, Victor Hugo, and Sun Yat-sen. In Cao Dai, God is represented as an eye in a triangle, a symbol that appears on the facades of the sect's temples. The religion's organization is patterned after that of Roman Catholicism, with a pope, cardinals, and archbishops. Worship involves elaborate rituals and festivals. In 1919 Ngo Van Chieu, an administrator for the French in Indochina, received a communication from the supreme deity during a table-moving séance. Chieu became the prophet of the new religion, which was formally established in 1926. A Cao Dai army was established in 1943 during the Japanese occupation of Indochina. After the war the Cao Dai was an effective force in national politics; it first supported, then opposed, Premier Ngo Dinh Diem. In 1955-56 Diem disbanded the Cao Dai army and forced the sect's pope, Pham Cong Tac, into exile. After the communist takeover in 1975, Cao Dai was reportedly repressed by the government. Centers of worship were established in Vietnamese refugee communities abroad, however, and by the early 1990s Cao Dai was reported to have some two million adherents in Vietnam, Cambodia, France, and the United States. Headquarters of the religion are at Tay Ninh, near Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon).

April/May 2000 The Divine Eye gazes unblinkingly from the enormous globe on the altar. Twenty-eight dragon-encrusted columns, representing the twenty-eight manifestations of the Buddha, run the entire length of the immense chamber. The temple’s enormous windows, all emblazoned with the Eye, let in the muted sunlight. Lao Tze, the Sakyamoni Buddha, and Confucius share the stage with Jesus Christ on the fronton above the altar. The Great Divine Temple, epicenter of the Cao Dai religion, is unlike any other house of worship in the world. Cao Daism was founded in southern Viet Nam in 1926 and claims six million adherents. Cao Dai temples dot the Mekong Delta, but the faith’s world headquarters is the Holy See compound which lies just outside the Vietnamese city of Tay Ninh, about two hours northwest of Saigon, near the Cambodian border. Like the Cao Dai religion, the Great Divine Temple, centerpiece of the Holy See compound, is a vibrant and mesmerizing mix of different traditions and theologies. The immensity of the temple combined with the riotous colours and statuary creates an effect that is at once grand and gaudy. The enormous temple and its accoutrements will inspire thoughts of the Supreme Being, but also of Walt Disney. A full appreciation of the temple requires some knowledge of the Cao Dai religion. While many other religions are insular, Caodaism trumpets its foundations in other faiths. Caodaists describe their religion as the unification of Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism: These faiths are represented in Cao Dai theology through such concepts as reincarnation, vegetarianism and yin and yang and also on the Cao Dai banner - a tri-colour with one colour for each religion.

Tay Ninh
Tay Ninh is the holy site of Caodaism, probably Vietnam's most curious indigenous religion. Caodaism, founded in 1926 by Ngo Minh Chieu, is an attempt at an ideal religion, using religious and philosophical traditions from the West and the East, including Buddhism, Confusianism, Taoism, Hinduism, native Vietnamese spiritism, Christianity and Islam. The eclectism of the religion is reflected in the Great Temple. Built between 1933 and 1955, it combines architectural elements of a church, a pagoda in an extravagant rocco style. The ceremony at the Great Cao Dai temple has a visually beautiful ritual, with the ordinary clergy in white robes and only the high priest wearing color. Traditional music is sung and played as well. It takes place daily at noon (there are three others during the day, but it's too dark then), and visitors are admitted on upstairs balconies. Past the first half-hour, the crowds of tourists will thin out, so there is no need to jockey for position. Visitors are welcome but not allowed on the floor of the temple. We were directed to a balcony from where this photograph was taken. White robed followers are happy to describe their beliefs and answer questions. There has been no Pope since 1933. The three hooded figures on the front row are lady bishops. Above the altar on a paper globe is the Cao Dai symbol of the divine eye surrounded by sun rays. Caodaism combines the three main religions of Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism and includes Christianity, Islam and the traditional Vietnames Cult of Ancestor Worship. The robes of the priests who are non professional, indicate their branch of the religion. Yellow for Buddhism, Red for Confucianism and azure for Taoism. On entering the temple shoes are removed.. Men enter and worship on the right and women on the left.. In spite of the somewhat bizzare surroundings we found the noonday ceremony with its music and chanting to be very moving. We were warned that the clergy would be unwilling to be photographed but this was not the case. Even the octogenarian lady bishops sat for a 'portrait'. Lest the big God's Eye and psychedelic colors flash you back to the Summer of Love, this indigenous alter belongs to the Caodai, and Vietnam's Congregation of Kitsch.
By Ron Gluckman/Tay Ninh, Danang and Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam E XOTIC OFFERINGS ARE COMMONPLACE across Asia, but in Vietnam, stands that rare attraction that simply refuses to be ignored. Colorful seems an insufficiently drab description for the utterly original, outrageous, bizarre, beautiful Holy See. Actually, terming this monumental Congregation of Kitsch a mere attraction is also underselling the impact of what is, in fact, a genuine icon of the believe-it-or-not genre. Nothing this unique, this done up, so over-the-top and out there, could ever have been created solely for tourists. No, the Cao Dai’s holiest temple, in Tay Ninh, just 90 kilometers from Ho Chi Minh City, is the real thing. But what is it? Words cannot suffice. Visitors have called it a Spiritual Disneyland, an Alice-in-Wonderland leap through a magic mirror into a Fantasia in which life has been transformed into a Technicolor daydream. At Tay Ninh, everything is bright, vivid, larger than life. It’s mad, moving, must-see to believe. Enormous, finely-detailed enamel dragons with lifelike scales slitter around giant day-glow pink banisters at the entrance to the grandest of a series of Cao Dai shrines sprinkled around southern Vietnam. All mix grand architectural themes and religious decorum as liberally as philosophy is stirred together in services held four times daily inside.

Saigon may well be an alluring city. But if you need a break - physically, mentally and spiritually - from this city's frenetic pace during your stay, there are plenty of day trip options out of the city to choose from. Saigon in fact doubles up as great stepping-stone in the south of Vietnam. Many of the traveller's cafes and tour operators in the centre of town can organize these for you, as you're probably smart enough to pass on the public transport. One such excursion and a real highlight for many travellers, is the Cao Dai Cathedral , or Great Temple of the Holy See . As its only 96kms out from Saigon - in Tay Ninh District - you can easily make the trip in one day. The journey out to the cathedral, heading northwest out of Saigon on Highway One, is lined with pancake flat paddy fields and farmland. Its' present day tranquillity belies the ferocious fighting experienced here during wars of previous decades. Tay Ninh District is virtually encompassed by the foreboding lands of Cambodia, and the imposing

  • Founder: Ngo Minh Chieu
  • Date of Birth:
  • Birth Place: Vietnam (South)
  • Year Founded: October 7, 1926 Le Van Trung and 28 other persons signed the "Declaration of the Founding of the Cao Dai Religion" which included a list of 247 signatures of members present at the ceremony announcing the official existence of Caodaism.
  • Sacred or Revered Texts: The Dai Thua Chon Giao is a doctrine that teaches the way for overcoming intolerance of earlier salvations. The Phap Chanh Truyen is Caodaism's religious Constitution illustrating the structure of the church. It is an unchangeable document created through spiritist messages from God. The Phap Chanh Truyen controls the Tan-Luat (the New Canonical Codes/New Law) and other legal documents, which are the key to administering the religion. They were established by the Sacerdotal Council (headed by the pope) and cannot be changed, vanished, or replaced in any way without the proper procedures that are instructed in the Phap Chanh Truyen.
