Gaithersburg Man Crosses the Bruderhof
Maryland Daily Record, August 31, 2000
By Peter Geier
A family court hearing yesterday in upstate New York may seem far removed from a federal lawsuit filed last week in Baltimore, but the two are inextricably linked by bonds of emotion, blood and faith. In the New York case, a Nigerian man is seeking visitation rights to children he fears he may never see again, after being kicked out of a religious group called the Bruderhof. Two other cases involving Nigerians excommunicated from the Bruderhof also are pending. In the Baltimore lawsuit, an air charter service with ties to the Bruderhof is suing a Gaithersburg man for defamation for publicly speculating that the air service spirited the four children and their mothers to Pennsylvania and Great Britain to prevent them from appearing in the Ulster County, N.Y., Family Court. "Speculation continues to mount today in regards to whether Rifton Aviation Services...may have flown four children and their mothers out of the country in order to prevent them from appearing" in court, the Gaithersburg man, S. Blair Purcell, wrote in a self-styled "press release" posted on the Internet Aug. 16. Rifton Aviation filed the defamation action eight days later. It claims the release was posted where its clients could see it and had caused the company to become an object of public wrath and ridicule.

Bruderhof Communities
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
The Bruderhof Communities German place of brothers ) are Christian faith-based communities with branches in New York and Pennsylvania in the USA , the United Kingdom Germany , and Australia . They have previously been called The Society of Brothers and The Hutterian Brethren They were founded in Germany in by Eberhard Arnold . He was a religious seeker for several years. Then in 1920 he rented a farm at Sannerz, Germany and founded a religious community with seven adults. Their inspiration was first church in Jerusalem who shared all things in common as described in the Book of Acts . The teachings of Jesus , in particular those concerning nonviolence, faithfulness in marriage, and love of neighbors and enemies in the Sermon on the Mount are central to Bruderhof life. Also influential was the example of the early Anabaptists of the Radical Reformation in the 1500s.

Bruderhof Communities members witness to the Bruderhof life of faithfulness and service
Member Stories
Being a Bruderhof member myself, I grew up hearing these stories. Often on a summer night, we'd meet together with all the members of the community. After a few songs about courage and faithfulness, we'd stretch out our legs and somebody would start telling about how they found the Bruderhof. What struck me again and again the diversity of the backgrounds. There were Jews, Gentiles, Protestants, Catholics, Atheists and Evangelicals... you name it. And all these people felt called to pursue a life of sharing together.
Bruderhof Family
The essence of the Bruderhof life is not the property, the buildings, the land etc. Not even in the church services or the order of the church itself. Rather it exists in the hearts of the people. That is why I thought there would be no better way to convey the what is deepest on our own hearts than to make these stories available for everybody to read. So click away!

Program Transcript Randy Gauger on Bruderhof immigration NSW Parliamentarian Richard Torbay on Bruderhof immigration David Rutledge : Welcome to the program. Today in Holy Week we’re looking at how Christianity may well get you into heaven, but it certainly won’t guarantee you an open-ended stay in Australia. This week we’ve heard that the government has been reviewing the cases of 30 long-term immigration detainees, mostly from Afghanistan and Iran, who have converted to Christianity, and therefore face persecution if they return to their countries of origin. One of them, the Iranian Amir Mesrinejad, has had his case adopted by the Anglican Archbishop of Sydney, Dr Peter Jensen, and we’ll be hearing from Dr Jensen a little later in the program. But first, Prime Minister John Howard’s declaration this week that Christians will not get preferential treatment from the Immigration Department comes as no surprise to the members of a Christian community in rural New South Wales, that’s currently considering its future in the light of tightened visa regulations. The Bruderhof is an international Christian movement that draws on the spirituality of the Mennonite and Amish traditions. Bruderhof members live in large rural communities with an ethic of simple living, pacifism and the renunciation of individual private property.

    An Encounter with the Bruderhof
    Sunday 5 June 2005
Summary Nick Franklin visits the Bruderhof in NSW to see how their commitment to the spirit of the early Christians, who expressed their faith by sharing all their property, plays out in daily life in 21st century rural Australia. Transcript Nick Franklin: This is ABC Radio National. Nick Franklin here, on the road for Encounter in New England, New South Wales, heading out of Inverell and looking for the Bruderhof community. They’ve not been in Australia many years, and in fact of them have been forced to leave the country, after falling foul of the Federal government’s visa regulations. I’ve been told to look out for a big sign, I can see it in the distance, a sign on the side of the road, and as I get closer, I can see it’s an impressive sign, it’s hand-carved, gold-leaf lettering, and the sign says actually, ‘Signs’. That’s where the Bruderhof are, and they told me also on the phone of another sign as to what they’re all about. Have a look in the Bible, Acts 2: Verses 44-45. The turn’s coming up here.

Woodcrest Bruderhof residents gather for lunch in the community's dining room in Rifton. RIFTON Its name means ''place of brothers.'' Tucked away in a humble community are a close-knit group of families who base their lives on worship of God and service to others. They are known as the Bruderhof. Their lifestyle is simple. They work hard, dress modestly and divide the fruits of their labor with all in the community. That includes pooling their money and sharing their homes and cars. ''Our purpose in living together is to make the Bible real in our lives,'' said Emmy Barth, historian of the Woodcrest Bruderhof in Rifton. Roots date to 1500s The first Bruderhof arrived in Rifton nearly 50 years ago, establishing the first American Bruderhof settlement. The group now numbers about 3,000 worldwide in 10 communities in New York, Pennsylvania, England and Australia.

Journey Toward Wholeness Joining the Bruderhof , a Christian Community
    Charles E. Moore
Ten years ago, my wife and I packed up our bags to join a Christian community, the Bruderhof a fellowship of men, women, and children who live, work, and share a common purse and a common life together. By "community" I mean a gathered life involving a total commitment to each other. Our homes, work place, community center, and school are all together in one geographic space. We possess no private property and share daily life together. Why would I, a seminary professor, and my wife, a high school teacher, drop everything and move across the country to join the Bruderhof, an intentional Christian community ? We were both well on our way to a fulfilling and fruitful life of meaningful work. So why the change? In short, because we were living a slow death of gradual disintegration. As for myself, the explosive energy of my youth had fast become dissipated, not because of reckless living, but as a result of obsessively attempting too much and of trying to hold everything together. It was a meltdown of my own choosing. I was obsessed with trying hard, being good, meeting needs, pleasing God, and doing the right thing. There were so many good causes to join, so much knowledge to master, so many people to meet, so many relationships to build, so many obligations to fulfill, and so many opportunities to explore. But as I plunged into the whirlwind of possibility, I became systematically fragmented. Peace of heart slipped away, peace of life was lost.

Update: I just visited Spring Valley Bruderhof where they make the custom wood signs If someone had told me a few months back that a group of some three thousand radical Christians were practicing cooperative community living in modern-day America, I probably would have said, Check your water, buddy. After all, we're in the twenty-first century now - Y2K + 1, for Pete's sake - so why would anyone choose to spend time on hard-to-get-your-head-around things like religion, fellowship, commitment, and prayer?
Of course, now that I'm home (I live in New York City) from a three-day stint at the Bruderhof Communities' upstate commune, my perspective is radically different. I went to the Bruderhof on a whim - a latte-drinking friend of mine, speaking from experience, recommended it as a unique place to visit. "It'll blow your mind," he cautioned, "and some of their people serve lousy coffee - grounds floating in it, even - but you won't regret going there." What was I to say to that? I asked a few questions, to get the basic picture: According to my friend, the Bruderhof is a place where families and single people live and work together, and do their best to take care of each other - from the smallest to the most wrinkled. It sounded like a little taste of heaven (the coffee aside).
