It is a sister community to Spring Valley Bruderhof , founded in 1990 and also located in Farmington, Pennsylvania. Until 1965, the property, buildings, and lake remained practically unchanged. But by summer of that year, the hotel had become unbearable to live in. Members scarcely needed to set foot outside during the day; their homes, school, workplaces and communal dining hall and meeting room were all in the same enormous building. Besides, further development of the Bruderhof was impossible, as the lake occupied most of the property. So to rid Oak Lake of its "hotel atmosphere," the main building was drastically remodeled, the lake was completely drained, the lakebed landscaped and developed, and the property renamed. intentional Christian community Bruderhof communities in the United States United Kingdom Australia ...

A concise, readable introduction to the life and writings of a man who, in his search for Christ, spent his life turning conventional Christianity on its head.
Inner Words
Daily meditations selected by Emmy Arnold from the writings of her husband Eberhard Arnold, as well as those of Augustine, Blumhardt, Bodelschwingh, Deitrich Bonhoeffer, Meister Eckhart, Hermann Loens, Martin Luther, Thomas a Kempis, Hudson Taylor and others.
The Gospel in Dostoyevsky
Excerpts from Dostoyevsky's greatest novels explore the devastating (yet ultimately healing) social implications of the Gospels. This collection of passages vividly reveals - as none of his novels can on their own - the common thread of the great God-haunted Russian's questioning faith.
A Third Testament
In this illuminating collection of portraits, Muggeridge explores the spiritual wanderings seven maverick thinkers: Augustine, Pascal, Blake, Kierkegaard, Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, and Bonhoeffer.
Homage to a Broken Man
Those who knew J. Heinrich Arnold later in life wondered at the way people were drawn to this strange man with a thick accent and easy smile. In his presence, complete strangers poured out their darkest secrets and left transformed. Others wanted him dead.

In his latest book,
Endangered: Your Child in a Hostile World , author Johann Christoph Arnold contends that rule-breaking children make the most self-reliant and independent adults. He should know - Arnold, who lives at the Woodcrest Bruderhof , a Christian community where members seek to put their faith in action through service to others, prayer, and fellowship, is a pastor and youth counsellor with years of experience. In Endangered, he voices his concern for a culture that is fast alienating - if not annihilating - its own children and young people. "In Praise of Black Sheep" is a chapter from Endangered. Eberhard Arnold Download full PDF version of Eberhard Arnold's doctoral thesis on Friedrich Nietzsche's religious thought. Eberhard Arnold's doctoral thesis reveals a great deal about Friedrich Nietzsche's religious thought. But it reveals equally as much about Arnold's inner viewpoint in 1909. Nietzsche's philosophy, language, and thinking continued to concern Arnold even after he completed his doctorate. In the following years, traces of the great impression made on him by this eccentric and extraordinary thinker surfaced in his thought, speech, and action. Arnold agreed with Nietzsche that "the church's foundation is built upon the very opposite of the Gospels"; that the church is "a terrible hodgepodge of Greek philosophy and Judaism, of asceticism, of hierarchical order, etc." Further, he shared Nietzsche's view that originally Christianity "tolerated no connection with politics and state policies; it cannot in any way be a religion of the masses."

member of Hutterian Brethren, Anabaptist sect that found refuge from persecution in Moravia and the Tirol; it stressed community of goods on the model of the primitive church in Jerusalem. The community, which acquired the name of its charismatic leader, Jakob Hutter (tortured and burned as a heretic in 1536), still survives, mostly in the western sections of the United States and Canada with a population of about 20,000. In colonies of 60 to 150 persons, they operate collective farms ( Bruderhof ) and, not unlike the Old Order Amish, remain aloof from outside society, taking no part in politics. Children are educated inside the colony until age 14 or until a minimum age decreed by state or province.
