British Methodist Episcopal Church (Toronto, Ontario) Christ Church - St. James, BME, known as "the BME Church," one of the oldest Black congregations in Canada, suffered a tragic loss when its building at 460 Shaw Street was destroyed by arson on April 16,1998. The British Methodist Episcopal Church traces its origins back to the 1830s, when ministers from the U.S.-based African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church came to Canada to preach to recent Black settlers who had fled the US via the Underground Railroad. In 1856, the Canadian AME Assemblies decided to sever their ties with the US and the new British Methodist Episcopal (BME) Church was formed. The Toronto congregation itself dates back to 1845 and has occupied church buildings at several locations; in 1955 it moved to 460 Shaw Street upon amalgamation with the Afro Community Church. Here, the BME Church not only ministered to its congregation, but was a vital force in the greater Community. Its many social, educational and recreational programs included orientation for new immigrants, Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts, seniors get-togethers, and services for residents at the Castleview Wychwood Towers nursing home. At the time of the fire, the congregation numbered over 300, with some 50 children on the Sunday School roll. The BME Church had just renovated its kitchen facilities prior to launching a new Seniors Nutrition Program, but this project, and all the Church's activities, were suddenly interrupted by the devastating fire.

The British Methodist Episcopal (BME) Church
It is believed that a Methodist or Baptist Church was at the forefront in every area of Black activity in Canada. Strong religious belief and faith was often the centre of life for Black settlers, including escaped slaves, when they arrived in Canada. Those who settled in Owen Sound were no exception. The British Methodist Episcopal Church in Owen Sound was, from its inception, a safe haven for Blacks during the time of the Underground Railroad and after. It offered a sense of community through its many church-affiliated groups and activities. Although they were free, Blacks still faced racism and discrimination on a daily basis and the church served as a means of support in an environment that was at times hostile.
    Underground Railroad Routes
In Sydenham Village, early church services were held in different places throughout the new settlement. A lay preacher, , the son of a slave, informally served the congregation in 1851. After the Church was established, Father Miller continued to fill in during the absence of ordained ministers. He passed away on October 17, 1911, the same year the congregation moved for its fifth and last time.

    British Methodist Episcopal Church
245 Eleventh Street West, Owen Sound, Ontario This church was an important centre for the community life of early Black settlers in the Owen Sound area. The building had been originally built for the Scrope Street Methodists in 1889 and was described in the Owen Sound Sun Times , October 3, 1889 as a "neat building 40 x 60 feet, veneered with red brick with white facing. Alex Green was the carpenter, Alex Urquhart the bricklayer, Ward and Fox the plasterers, P. Rickard the painter and glazer and Christian Agar the tin-work and gas fittings. The windows were glazed with glass in a variety of tints". The church accomodated a congregation of three hundred. The British Methodist Episcopal congregation acquired the building for $1 in 1911 from the Westside Methodists. Traditionally a Black Church, the B.M.E. denomination was started in 1851 by the son of a slave, the Reverend Thanas Miller (1813-1910). The Owen Sound Sun Times , July 25, 1987, records that Blacks came to Owen Sound as early as 1843. Most came up from the Windsor Chatham area, terminus of the famous "Underground Railroad". A settlement sprang up around Holland Centre and from there many moved to Owen Sound. Some worked as cooks on the Great Lakes steamers and some as cooks and waiters in the Owen Sound hotels. By the mid-1800's Owen Sound had a black population of some three hundred.
