Piracy
Ships Flags Weapons ... Awards
Over the centuries, pirates have been portrayed as both admirable rogues and bloodthirsty devils. This site is about the reality, myth, and romance of those adventurous souls mainly from the Golden Age of Piracy. Which refers to a time around the late 17th to early 18th centuries. It contains information regarding pirate facts and fiction, with biographies of some of the most famous pirates from this era. You will also find pages devoted to piracy in general, pirate ships, pirate flags, pirate images, pirate weapons and nautical treasure. There is a movie list for swashbuckler fans, and even a dictionary of nautical terms for all ye scurvy landlubbers as well.
The Ports O'Call area is a list of links to most of my favorite seafarin' and pirate related websites. Many of these sites were used as sources of information and inspiration on the subject. Lately I have received many e-mail requests from buggers looking to buy various pirate items. So at the bottom of Ports O'Call there is a new section of links to websites that sell pirate and nautical plunder. Buyer beware.. I have not personally dealt with all of these smugglers sites and have no control over their bloody business practices.
Finally their is a page about sea shanties. These were the work songs used on many of the large sailing ships in the 18th and 19th centuries. Although the majority of these were used after the Golden Age of Piracy, some are based on songs and melodies of that time period. They have been added to give visitors a sense of life aboard a tall sailing vessel. Check back here often as I plan to build on and update this site frequently. In the meantime gather round a keg of rum and enjoy your stay... but you better keep a weather eye open.. for there be treacherous waters ahead... watch your step around here matey... least ye meet yer doom.

104. Honors To Alexander Mack
Interpretation of the life and thought of Alexander Mack, founder of the brethren Church, Church of the brethren, Grace brethren, and other brethren groups.
http://www.cob-net.org/mack/honors.htm
This document may be reproduced, only if remaining intact, with prior acknowledgement to the author. In America today we honor many distinguished persons: former presidents, military heroes, actors and actresses, athletes, and pop singers. We honor them by naming buildings, streets, airports, and cities for them. We inscribe their names on sidewalks in Hollywood or immortalize them in various Halls of Fame.
Religious leaders have also earned places of honor. Stained glass windows in beautiful cathedrals honor many saints of the early church. A monumental wall in Geneva Switzerland honors Protestant Reformers, such as Martin Luther and John Calvin.
In his letter to the Christians in Rome, St. Paul counseled them to give honor to whom honor is due. (Romans 13:7) As the organizer and first minister of the small religious group in Germany who called themselves “New Baptists,” Alexander Mack (1679-1735) is one deserving high honors. Today the Brethren Church, the Church of the Brethren, the Fellowship of Grace Brethren Churches, and the Old German Baptist Brethren, as well as a number of groups in Asia, Africa and South America all trace their denominational origins back to Alexander Mack and a baptismal service of eight persons in the Eder River at Schwarzenau, Germany, in August of 1708.
Mack was born in the obscure agricultural village of Schriesheim, a few miles from Heidelberg, Germany in 1679, more than 300 years ago. His ancestors had been political and religious leaders of the village since their arrival there in 1560. His father was twice mayor of Schriesheim and a successful mill owner. Although Alexander had hoped to attend the University at Heidelberg, the death of an older brother made him a logical heir to the large mill, cutting short his educational aspirations. Schriesheim suffered from successive occupations by invading German and French armies. Three times the Mack family had to flee to nearby hills for safety. Growing up Mack became disillusioned by war and war-making states, and confused by the participation of Christians on both sides of a conflict.

A short description of his connection with the brethren of the Common Life.
http://prayerfoundation.org/favoritemonks/favorite_monks_thomas_a_kempis.htm
F avorite M onks T homas K empis Thomas à Kempis 1379 (or 1380) -1471 Author of The Imitation of Christ ; Thomas was an Augustinian Monk, and a Disciple of Gerard Groot . Thomas was a member of Groot's Brethren of the Common Life , and a proponent of Groot's teachings, called The Devotio Moderna , of which The Imitation of Christ is the best example. Have you received Christ as your Lord and Saviour? Tell others about Jesus like Thomas à Kempis did: Though not all Christians are called to be Christian Teachers, we are all called by God to share our faith (witness) with those who are not Christians. Some Bible verses that you will find helpful for doing this, and that you may want to commit to memory are found on other pages on our web site ( see: Memory Verses; 2nd Set: Salvation! Plan of Salvation , and Statement of Faith by Monk Preston "Hold fast to Jesus both in life and in death and commit yourself to his steadfast love, for he alone can help you when all others fail. Your beloved is such that he admits no other rival; He wants your heart all to Himself and desires to reign there as a king on his own throne." -Thomas à Kempis

History
Purpose
Beginning in the late 1970s historian and genealogist Donald R. Bowman of Brookville, Ohio, a member of the Southern Ohio District Historical Committee of the Church of the Brethren, began accumulating many books, historical records and artifacts from the several Churches of the Brethren in the Miami Valley, Ohio. This collection was housed in the old Happy Corner Church of the Brethren and was opened to the public as "Brethren Heritage Center." By 1999 some old-order Brethren became concerned about preserving their books and records. One of them, Fred W. Benedict, who had earlier pledged his entire library for preservation, met Larry E. Heisey and Mark F. Steury, each of whom pledged to supplement a project from their own extensive collections. At the same time the Happy Corner project needed a new home. In August 2000, Benedict attended a meeting of the Historical Committee and on January 24, 2001, members from several old-order groups, totaling about 30 persons, met in Greenville and agreed to meet with the Historical Committee at Mill Ridge Village, Union, Ohio.

Yarrow Mennonite Brethren Church (Yarrow, BC)
The first settlers of Yarrow arrived in February 1928 and began meeting in the homes of Mennonite Brethren and Mennonite Church families. In the summer of 1928 the group began meeting in a one-room public school. The Mennonite Brethren organized as a separate congregation of 96 members on 3 February 1929 with Peter Dyck as the first leading minister. The congregation's first baptism was held 14 July 1929. In 1930 the church was officially accepted into the Northern District conference of the Mennonite Brethren Church, and became a founding member of the B.C. Conference of Mennonite Brethren Churches in 1931. Johann A. Harder In 1931 Johann A. Harder was elected to serve as leading minister after Peter Dyck moved to Vancouver. Harder served for 18 years and was also an instrumental leader in the larger Mennonite Brethren conference. Soon after the congregation organized, a significant number of members began holding their own services in neighboring Greendale, formally organizing in 1931 as the Sardis Mennonite Brethren Church (later Greendale Mennonite Brethren
