http://www.macomb.com/~ilmcdono/Churches/UB.html
United Brethren in Christ United Brethren in Christ is the title of the church which, in the latter part of the last century, grew out of the religious awakening of Philip William Otterbein and a number of his friends. Philip William Otterbein, the leader of this movement, was a distinguished divine and missionary of the German Reformed church, who was sent by the synod of Holland, in 1752, from Dillenburg, Germany, to America. As a young man he preached with great power and learning. It was not, however, till after his settlement at Lancaster, Pennsylvania, his first charge in America, that Otterbein, after much prayer, realized that God had poured upon him the spirit of grace and power. He began to urge the necessity of a new birth and of experimental godliness. Rev. Martin Boehm, a zealous Mennonite, having himself experienced a similar change of heart, was engaged in a different field in the same work. At a "great meeting" held about 1766, in Isaac Long's barn, in Lancaster county, Pennsylvania, both these ministers, with many others, were present. At the close of a very earnest sermon by Mr. Boehm, Mr. Otterbein arose and embraced the preacher, crying, "We are brethren!" These words suggested, a number of years later, the name for the new denomination which finally sprung from this meeting. For the purpose of uniting and establishing the believers in the new life a conference of the ministers was held in 1789, at Baltimore. In 1800, the societies interested in the movement united and formed the "United Brethren in Christ," with Mr. Otterbein and Mr. Boehm as bishops.

Nicaraguan Brethren in Christ bring water to their village
Tim Shenk
April 29, 2005 MCC photo by Jenna Stoltzfus Until recently, Maria Bernarda Lopez Ruiz spent two to three hours each day filling and carrying eight buckets from her neighbors' water taps because she did not have one of her own. "The houses where the people had good hearts, I would always ask," she says. Lopez has been a widow for 10 years, she says, and has six children four of them still at home. She is a longtime member of the village's Brethren in Christ Church, and in April her pastor led a community project to expand the village's basic waterworks. Now the Lopez family and 13 other households enjoy new water taps of their own. "We grow corn, beans and wheat," he says. "A few people have a pig or two or chickens. None of us have cattle, because we're surrounded by (land owned by) rich landowners. ... So we're working to make them richer." "They said, 'You've got to clean around the water source, and if that doesn't work, you've got to look for other sources of water to supplement this one,'" Jaime says. "The problem is that a lot of those other sources of water are on the land owned by the rich landowners."

Participants came away from the meeting with renewed determination and new ideas to strengthen the peace witness of their churches, the task of working together in the event of a draft and a priority to counter military recruitment of youth and young adults, which was called a "back-door draft" that is already happening across the country. Participants also said the churches need to strengthen their commitment to Christian service whether there is a draft or not, and need to extend the Christian peace witness and the conversation about these issues beyond the peace churches. "This calling is not just for Anabaptists," said Dick Davis, pastor of Peace Mennonite Church in Dallas, Texas, and a former Southern Baptist Army chaplain. "This calling extends beyond our communities. We are agents of reconciliation, ambassadors of Jesus."

United Brethren Archives The Church of the United Brethren in Christ is the first American denomination that was not transplanted from Europe. The denomination began as a meeting between two diverse preachers at a Grosse Versammlung (great meeting) in Lancaster, Pennsylvania on Whitsunday, 1767. At this meeting Martin Boehm, a Bishop of the Mennonite Church, preached a powerful sermon that moved Philip William Otterbein, a German Reformed minister, to the point where Otterbein embraced Boehm and exclaimed " Wir Sind Bruder! " or "We Are Brethren". For the next 33 years this movement spread among the German colonists in Pennsylvania and Maryland. Finally in 1800 the first annual conference was held at Frederick, Maryland and the United Brethren movement was established as The Church of the United Brethren in Christ, electing Boehm and Otterbein as the first Bishops. The United Brethren movement also helped to spawn other pietistic German American denominations including the Evangelical Church, Churches of God and the Brethren in Christ.
