Brethren in Christ Church
Note: This chapter relies principally on information found on the World Wide Web at www.bic-church.org (Brethen in Christ Denominational website). Description The Brethren in Christ Church began about 1778 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, with a group called the River Brethren. Since their beliefs differed from those of other churches, they formed a Confession of Faith in 1780. The beliefs of the Church were drawn from several schools of thought, including Pietistic, Anabaptist and, later on, Wesleyan. The major alterations to church doctrine were made in 1937 and 1961. There are about 35 congregations currently active in Canada. Brethren in Christ believe in the Trinity: God, the Father/Creator who has made Himself known through the Son, Jesus Christ, and through the Holy Spirit. Jesus Christ died and was resurrected from the dead as an atonement for human sins. The Holy Spirit works in the world, convincing people to repent of sin and guiding them to fullness of life in Christ. The Brethren in Christ doctrine states that God has given humans the ability to determine right from wrong, and so we have the ability to be good or to sin. Humans are predisposed to being sinners because Adam and Eve sinned and transferred that condition to their descendants. Humans are mortal for this reason. God also made humans stewards of the Earth. He created a moral order and hierarchy in the universe, which is described in the Scriptures.

The Mission is located 30 miles south of Bloomfield, New Mexico on 303 acres of the high desert plains. At almost 7000 feet above sea level the weather here is most always beautiful with a good amount of snow in the winter and not too hot summers. Navajo BIC Mission is reaching the Native People of our area through contextual ministryusing things familiar to the culture to share the Gospel. Outreaches include Day Camps, VBSs, Work projects, Mission teams, Christmas Love Gifts and other types of ministry as God leads. We also have a public laundry, public showers and we provide water to those who do not have running water at their homes. Welcome to
Pax Christi Chorale
Who We Are
Pax Christi Chorale has maintained a tradition of fine choral singing for the past seventeen years, performing some of the great masterpieces of the choral literature including Bach’s St. John Passion , Mendelssohn’s Elijah , Elgar’s Dream of Gerontius , Handel’s Messiah , Britten’s Saint Nicolas and Brahms’ Ein Deutsches Requiem . Many of the choristers are local Mennonites, but the choir boasts members from many different faith traditions and cultures, all of whom gather for weekly rehearsals because of their common love of singing. In the fall of 1999, the choir released its first CD, Rejoice! , which is now completely sold out. In December 2003, the choir released a new CD with Trillium Brass, Seasons of the Spirit . A musical journey through the Christian year from Advent and Christmas through Lent and Easter to Harvest, the CD includes works by Mendelssohn, Brahms and Praetorius and has been met with critical acclaim.

Welcome September 7, 2005 - Lonesome Lonesome. Now there's an old-fashioned word we seldom hear nowadays. But it
defines that alusive sense of aloneness that is as ordinary as hiccups.
No one has ever captured the nuances of loneliness like Hank Williams. He had
in the end swallowed him whole. His raw-edged twang would shock the ears of
those accustomed to today’s syrupy sounds, but the man’s songs remain emotional
powder kegs. The initial shock would turn to empathy, for his country-blues
force the listener to crawl up inside that empty place within. In his classic
reluctantly experience it:
“Have you ever heard a robin grieve When leaves begin to die? That means he's lost the will to live I'm so lonesome I could cry.” That's how I'm feeling today - listening to a robin grieve. Or maybe it was Springsteen who best put my mood into words: "Cut loose like a duece, another runner in the night. . ." I don't know, but life does go on, doesn't it?

Both denominations originated early in the 19th cent. and had similarities in organization and polity. The Evangelical Church was begun by the evangelical, pietistic efforts of Jacob Albright , a Lutheran convert to Methodism, who preached among his fellow Pennsylvania Germans. The United Brethren in Christ came into being as a result of the evangelistic preaching of Philip William Otterbein of the German Reformed Church and Martin Boehm Moravian Church are also sometimes called the United Brethren. In earlier years the membership of the Evangelical Church and of the United Brethren in Christ included few who were not German in speech, but later the German-speaking element formed only a small proportion. The newly combined church supported publishing houses in the United States and abroad, four theological seminaries, a number of colleges, and foreign missions. It had an episcopal form of government. In doctrine it was Arminian. Particular emphasis was laid on prayer, a life of devotion to Christ, and the responsibility of the individual. Having long maintained a close relationship with the Methodist Church, it merged with it to found (1968) the

They were popularly known as Dunkards, Dunkers, or Tunkers, from the German for “to dip,” referring to their method of baptizing. The Brethren evolved from the Pietist movement in Germany. The first congregation was organized there in 1708 by Alexander Mack. Persecution drove them to America where, under Peter Becker, they settled (1719) in Germantown, Pa. From that and other settlements in Pennsylvania they spread westward and into Canada. The Brethren oppose war and advocate temperance, the simple life, plain dress, and “obedience to Christ rather than obedience to creeds and cults.” The original group, at present the largest in the United States, is the Church of the Brethren (Conservative Dunkers); the local churches are united by an annual conference that elects a general board to supervise the national church program. From the Church of the Brethren there have been separations into the Seventh-Day Baptists, German Baptists (1728; see Beissel, Johann Conrad
