Peace Church Bible Study Home Page
Welcome! This web site is for anyone with an interest in the Bible and the "Historic Peace Churches" (Brethren, Mennonites, Quakers). I hope this site will:
  • Help bridge the gap between academic/scholarly readers of the Bible and non-academics, and between "believers" and those who feel no religious affinity for the biblical text. Help people who want to learn the languages in which the earliest manuscripts of the Bible are written: Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek. I'm particularly interested in those who are studying these languages outside a formal classroom setting for whatever reason. Help Brethren, Mennonites, Quakers (and anyone who feels an affinity for any of these groups) to engage Scripture more deeply. Offer ideas for working with Scripture ecumenically and in interfaith settings. Give me some practice learning HTML and web page design.
Please let me know what you think about how I'm doing with any of this. I'm especially interested in communicating and synergizing with folks who share any of these goals and interests. Thanks! Grace and peace of the Lord to you!

The Evangelical Church of Czech Brethren - Prague 10 Strašnice
A few Words about the Church
The Evangelical Church of Czech Brethren is a Christian church containing traditions of Czech and European reformation, founded in 1918 by the connection of two protestant currents: the Lutheran and the Calvin one. It is a church based on testimony of the Bible, first of all on the gospel. Though some of its traditions go back up to the 15th century, it tries to be a modern church dealing with up-to-date world’s problems. Its organization is formed by principles of democracy. Since its foundation in 1930 until the summer 2001, the congregational house hadn’t been reconstructed and so its facade remained the same. Original colors couldn’t been recognized any longer, the house became one of gray buildings in a gray street for many years. Just a copper chalice with the Bible at the front wall announced the difference from other houses – but even this was damaged and hard to be noticed. There was a need for reconstruction for a long time, but first for inside rooms and for the roof of the assembly hall. Nowadays the facade is brand new with new front doors and with reconstructed chalice above them. In the opposite of the original look, remained on photographs, the new surface has changed both colors and a few of “important details”. It is not the end of itself. The author of the design, Ondøej Smolík, an architecture student, says:

SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKE DEDICATION
The Smith Mountain Lake Community Church, a new church start of the Church of the Brethren, dedicated their newly purchased five-acre site March 19. Located seven miles south of Burnt Chimney, Va., in the Roanoke area, this property was secured through a partnership of the Community Church and the congregations of the Virlina District.
Pastor Jerry Naff spoke on the importance of giving thanks to God for this expression of vision, faith and hope, and Virlina district executive David K. Shumate led those assembled in a dedicatory prayer. The service concluded with a ground-breaking service followed by remarks by John Hamilton, trustee of the Hamilton Trust from which the property was purchased. Members of the Smith Mountain Lake Building Committee, chaired by Clinton Wade, expressed the hope that they will be in their new building by November. Completion of the building will require a $230,000 indebtedness. The fellowship reports having received pledges totaling $103,000 toward this goal. The Smith Mountain Lake Community Church began in 1995, located in a resort community. Judy Mills Reimer, current executive director of the General Board, was the founding pastor. Top: A sign announces the coming new church building; Middle: Pastor Jerry Naff, Cami Jones and Rick Taylor lead in the service. Bottom: A group attending the service gathers at the site around an original log cabin on the property which was last used as a store.

What is the Brethren Church?
The Brethren Church began in Schwarzenau, Germany in 1708 primarily out of a desire for religious freedom and in reaction to the government controlled churches of the day. By the mid 1700's the Brethren Church had migrated to America in pursuit of that same religious freedom. The heritage of the Brethren church would be similar to that of other "Anabaptist" denominations such as the Mennonite, German Baptist Brethren, Church of the Brethren and Grace Brethren. The Brethren maintain that the entire Bible (Old Testament and New Testament) is the inspired Word of God and that Jesus Christ is the Son of God who gave His life as a sacrifice for our sins. We also believe that Jesus rose from the dead on the third day and that He has ascended into heaven where He intercedes on our behalf. Having ascended into heaven, Jesus sent His Holy Spirit to live in the hearts of His people as our comforter, counselor and friend. We believe that those who have acknowledged Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior will have the assurance of a home in heaven with Christ for all eternity. The Brethren Church seeks to live out their faith in Christ on a daily basis. Obedience to Christ is demonstrated through a commitment to a daily relationship with God and involvement in the ministries of the church. We believe that God empowers His people to this obedient service through the gifts of His Holy Spirit. Each person who believes in Christ is equipped by God to perform some meaningful function within the context of the Body of Christ.
