Grace Theological Seminary
Foreword: This sermon was prepared while Dr. Alva J. McClain was the pastor of the First Brethren Church of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Several young men of that church were urged by friends to enter the Masonic lodge and they came to Dr. McClain for counsel in the matter. As the outcome of a conference with them he promised to make a fair investigation of the organization on the basis of such Masonic literature as might be available to the general public, and to report his findings in the form of a sermon to the congregation. Following the delivery of the sermon to a large audience, a number of interested friends made provision for its publication requesting that it be printed as delivered with as little change as possible. This will explain the conversational manner. This booklet has had wide circulation, having gone through six printings. In order to make the documentation up to date, the references in the Encyclopedia of Freemasonry were taken from the "New and Revised Edition" published by the Masonic History company in 1929. BMH Books sends forth this, the seventh printing with the prayer that this important message by the late Dr. Alva J. McClain might serve in an increasing ministry of helpfulness to persons being confronted by Freemasonry, and as Dr. McClain himself said in an earlier foreword, "that its ministry may be used to open the eyes of men, that they may see and honour the Lord Jesus Christ as the 'true God, and eternal life' (1 John 5:20)." The ultimate purpose of the MENNONITE BRETHREN CHURCH in Henderson is to:
CHANGE HEARTS
First, we LOVE GOD by allowing our hearts to be changed.
Jesus replied: "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment.
And the second is like it:
Love your neighbor as yourself."
Matthew 22:37-40
Second we LIVE FOR CHRIST in a way that others' hearts will be changed.
"and he sent them out to preach the Kingdom of God and to heal the sick."
Luke 9:2
Third we are Spirit Led for heart changes are made only by God's power. "It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the Body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ ." Evangelical United Brethren
Dennis Bratcher, ed. From the Discipline of the Evangelical United Brethren Church, 1963 The Evangelical United Brethren Church was formed in 1946 by the merger of The Church of the United Brethren in Christ and the Evangelical Church. In 1968, the Evangelical United Brethren Church merged with the Methodist Church to form the United Methodist Church (US).
We believe in the one true, holy and living God, Eternal Spirit, who is Creator, Sovereign and Preserver of all things visible and invisible. He is infinite in power, wisdom, justice, goodness and love, and rules with gracious regard for the well-being and salvation of men, to the glory of his name. We believe the one God reveals himself as the Trinity: Father, Son and Holy Spirit, distinct but inseparable, eternally one in essence and power.
We believe in Jesus Christ, truly God and truly man, in whom the divine and human natures are perfectly and inseparably united. He is the eternal Word made flesh, the only begotten Son of the Father, born of the Virgin Mary by the power of the Holy Spirit. As ministering Servant he lived, suffered and died on the cross. He was buried, rose from the dead and ascended into heaven to be with the Father, from whence he shall return. He is eternal Savior and Mediator, who intercedes for us, and by him all men will be judged.

  • Year Founded: Brief History: With the end of the Thirty Years War in 1648, the German principalities were given the freedom to choose between the Catholic, Lutheran or German Reformed traditions as their established faiths. But the established churches were not satisfactory for some. Pietism began to gain influence among people who felt that the churches were too mechanical. Alexander Mack agreed with the pietists position that there was a needfor a more personal and spiritual experience in religion. But unlike the pietist who believed that baptism was merely spiritual, he believed in adult baptism and the importance of water in the baptismal act (Brubaker, 2). On a summer day in 1708, Alexader Mack rebaptized eight people in the river Eder, thus initiating the "Brethren movement." The Brethren, officially known as the German Baptists throughout the nineteenth century (Melton, 441), mixed pietism with the Anabaptist tradition, blending a renewed emphasis on spirituality with the Anabaptist emphasis on outward expression of faith. They were specially influenced by the
