Baptists in the United Kingdom The origins of the modern Baptist movement are to be found in the European radical reformation of the early sixteenth century.Small groups grew up known as Anabaptists. Amongst other things these early groups only baptized believers on confession of faith holding that this was the New Testament pattern. They believed in the separation of church and state, religious liberty, and almost all were avowedly pacifist. In the early years of the seventeenth century a small group of people left the oppression of Great Britain to seek religious freedom in Amsterdam. They formed themselves into a church under the leadership of John Smyth (c.1554 - 1612) and Thomas Helwys, here they came under the influence of churches in the Mennonite tradition (an Anabaptist group named after Menno Simons 1496 - 1561), receiving believers baptism. In 1611 Thomas Helwys led the group back from Holland. Helwys was the author of ‘The Mistery of Iniquity’, the first English printed book to plead for full religious freedom. In this work Helwys argued for state and religion to be separated and argued for freedom of religion for all, specifically including in this Islamic, Judaic, and atheistic belief. The successors of Helwys and his friends became known as the General Baptists. They were Arminian in theology and their church order was independent, with the appointment of inter-congregational officials known as ‘Messengers’.In 1633 a group connected with a Calvinistic Separatist church in London broke away on adopting believer’s baptism. This was the origin of the Particular Baptists. They remained Calvinistic in theology but their church order was of the independent type.

Here and there the vapour thins a little and a vague outline of what is taking place can be discerned; but presently the veil falls again and the outline is lost until it once more emerges and takes definite form. From an article upon Rattray Street Baptist Church, appearing in the Scottish Baptist Magazine of May 1917, the following interesting account of the beginnings of the denomination in the town are culled. " In 1769, some persons who resided in Dundee, went to Edinburgh to be baptised, and strongly solicited Mr. Carmichael, one of the pastors, to go and preach in Dundee as there was a prospect of considerable success. He accordingly went, and during his stay, baptised several. Later on he settled as pastor, Mr. Thomas Boswell being associated with him in office. Mr. Boswell died after only three years' service, and two years later, Mr. Carmichael returned to Edinburgh in failing health, where he died in 1774."

CONTEXT Name of creator(s) Duncan, Moir Black (1861-1906) Duncan, Jessie Chalmers (1864-1966) Administrative/Biographical history : Moir Duncan was born on 17th August 1861, on the farm of Reinchall, near Aberdeen in Scotland, the son of Alexander Duncan and Margaret Black. The youngest of thirteen children, he determined to better himself, and became a draper's apprentice in Glasgow. It was here that, at the age of 15, his attendance at the Cambridge Street Baptist Church led to his baptism and a committment to becoming a missionary in China. To this end, aided by the Baptist Union, he enrolled at Glasgow University, where he excelled in English and Moral Philosophy, followed by Medicine and Science. After gaining an MA from Glasgow, he went on to study Theology and Chinese at the University of Oxford, leading to his ordination in 1888. In the meantime, Janet Chalmers Lister was born in Leslie, Fife, on 20th March 1864, the youngest of four children of Thomas and Isabella Lister. She became known as Jessie, and was schooled in Fife where she was also baptised at the Baptist Church in Leslie, which had been founded by her brother, the Reverend Thomas Whitson Lister. She went on to attend Queen Street Ladies' College in Edinburgh from 1877-79, and then undertook teacher training in Glasgow. It was here that she met Moir Duncan whilst he was studying at Glasgow University; they subsequently became engaged. In 1883 Jessie Lister began teaching in Sheffield, returning to Scotland the year after to spend six years teaching in King's Kettle, Fife. During this time she also read for the degree of L.L.A. (Lady Literate of Arts), becoming one of the first women to graduate (in 1889) from St Andrews University.

New Ethical Framework In general we welcome the proposals for a new ethical framework for local government and in particular we agree that this should also cover the other public bodies listed in Schedule 2. We support the idea of a statement of general principles, like the example in Annexe C. It is important that principles such as Duty, Selflessness, Integrity, Propriety, Objectivity, Openness, Confidentiality, and Honesty are emphasised rather than just a detailed list of what is and what is not allowed. However, we would question why it is considered that Members of the Scottish Parliament do not need to be subject to this ethical framework.

Baptists in the Ecumenical Context A paper presented by Faith Bowers of Bloomsbury Central Baptist Church London to the BWA Congress Heritage Commission Focus Group 6 January 2000 In Adelaide just before Christmas we went to a musical play, `Two from Galilee', about Mary and Joseph and the birth of Jesus. It was described as `a ministry project of the Rostrevor Baptist Church'. Staged at the university, it had a cast of 45, plus a further 30 in the crew, drawn from 25 Christian bodies - six more Baptist churches, and others from right across the Christian spectrum from the Christian Revival Crusade to Roman Catholic. A cast member told us the next Sunday how they all prayed together for forty minutes before each performance, chiefly that some in the audience would be moved to respond to the Gospel. Here were Baptists in the ecumenical context - working happily with other Christians to spread the Gospel. I come from England, where ecumenism is in a fairly advanced state. The primary ecumenical drive was a concern for mission and Baptists therefore felt it was right to join with others to that end. English Baptists have long co-operated with other mainstream Protestant dissenters and with many Anglicans. In 1948 the BUGB (Baptist Union of Great Britain) Secretary, M.E. Aubrey, was one of the committee of fourteen that drafted the WCC constitution, as a forum for discussion, communication and joint witness.
