Baptist Union of Scotland – an association serving the Baptist churches of Scotland Baptists first arrived in Scotland in the 1650s, but their opposition to Oliver Cromwell , as well as stiff opposition to the Baptists by the Reformers and the Scottish Parliament, brought about their demise. The movement would resurface later in two streams. The first stream includes the work of William Sinclair, beginning in Keiss in , and that of Robert Carmichael and Archibald McLean in Edinburgh in . This stream was called Scotch Baptists , and were very conservative strict Calvinists . This stream was called English Baptists , and were more moderate and less Calvinistic. After overcoming initial hostilities, these groups were able to unite in 1869. The Baptist Union of Scotland was founded in by 51 Churches, comprising about 3,500 members. The purpose of the Union is to provide mutual support, train ministers, engage in evangelical outreach and publish literature. There are currently (

Early English Baptists were divided upon two principles - Calvinism and Arminianism . The Particular Baptists held that the atonement of Christ was particularly for the elect, while the General Baptists held that the atonement was a general one that made salvation available to any man through voluntary faith in Christ. The Particular Baptist Missionary Society for Propogating the Gospel among the Heathen was organised in , under the leadership of Andrew Fuller ), John Sutcliff ( ) and William Carey ). When the Baptist Union was founded in , it was a Particular Baptist organisation. In , it was restructed to allow for membership of General Baptists. THE QUESTION RAISED
For several years past certain members of our churches have expressed disquiet concerning the relationship between Freemasonry and Christianity and the possible influence of the movement within some churches. The matter has been raised on several occasions in recent Assemblies and has been the subject of correspondence in the Scottish Baptist Magazine. Although we have little direct evidence that this constitutes as serious and widespread problem in Scottish Baptist Churches, the Council considered the matter carefully and originally agreed that the Doctrine and Inter-Church Relations core groups should review available literature and compile a document directing churches to sources of information, where it was felt guidance was needed. However, there were those who felt sufficiently strongly about the question to continue to press the Council for firmer action, and at the Council meeting of January 1987 it was agreed to appoint a group to study the relationship between Freemasonry and Christianity and to publish their findings in the form of a Viewpoint booklet. They do this in the conviction that our people need clear guidance in this area.

'For 250 years, the Baptist churches have brought their own unique contribution to the corporate life and witness of the Christian Church in Scotland.
'Evangelical in persuasion and evangelistic in practice, Baptists affirm the need for each individual to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
'We are known primarily for our practice of believers baptism but there are other characteristics which combine to form Baptist distinctives.
'Among them are a commitment to the authority and integrity of Scripture, an understanding of the Church as the gathered community of believers, the separation of Church and State, the obligations of Christian discipleship and the priesthood of all believers.
'These combine to create a spiritual dynamic which, along with flexibility in structure makes a Baptist church vibrant, purposeful and warm-hearted in fellowship. '

What makes a Baptist?
From the Baptist Union of Scotland website There is no one distinctive Baptist belief! Although probably most people think of believers' baptism as the primary Baptist distinctive, Baptists are not the only Christians to practise believers' baptism. Nor are they the only Christians to believe in congregational church government, the priesthood of all believers, or the separation of church and state.

Scottish church decline "is not inevitable"
Scottish Church Census 1 - Findings
May 19, 2003.
SUMMARY Some 11.2% of the population of Scotland attend church on an average Sunday in 2002. This is significantly higher than the 7.5% who attended in England in 1998, and shows that Scotland still has a strong tradition of church going. The results do show the expected decline in church attendance since the 1994 Church Census. However, there are some denominations, some parts of the country and certain groups in the population, which are doing better than might be expected. GROWTH Four of the smaller denominations have grown in the past eight years: Baptists (24,800 - up 1%), Christian Brethren (18,200 - up 6%), Pentecostals (10,100, up 11%) and the Salvation Army (7,000 - up 8%). The percentage of churchgoers who are men has increased (37% of churchgoers in 1984, 40% in 2002) and there has been an actual growth of 1,000 attendees aged 65 and over. Churches with fewer lay leaders were more likely to be growing, suggesting that a smaller team is more able to make strategic decisions and to implement change.

    16. Origins And Early Beginnings Of The Reformed Baptist Church, Inverness, Scotland
We would not be begrudging towards the baptist union of scotland in its recent withdrawal from the Scottish Churches Council now known as Action of
    http://www.wicketgate.co.uk/p1_6/p3_1.html
    The Origins of the Church
The origins of the Reformed Baptist church of Inverness are embedded, to some degree, in a measure of controversy. From 1966 - 1969 I had been the Pastor of the Inverness Baptist church which was in association with the Baptist Union of Scotland. to any degree with that system and still retain a conscience void of offence to the Saviour who was crucified to grant us the gospel. Accordingly, a protest was made to the Baptist Union Assembly in October 1969 that the Union forthwith withdraw from the Scottish Churches Council. This was roundly defeated, and although the Baptist church of Inverness resigned its membership of the Union the resignation, at best, was only half-hearted. This was shown to be the case at a later date when the church returned to the fold of the Union once again. With such an unsatisfactory state of affairs, then, there seemed no alternative but for me to resign the pastorate of that church; this took place in December 1969, when we moved, as a family to Edinburgh. The immediate purpose of the resignation was an attempt to allow the Inverness church to settle into its previous mode of working and thinking. In spite of this, however, the following months were to see some other resignations by a number of people who had come to the same convictions regarding any form of ecumenical involvement, and who had also come to embrace the "doctrines of grace" as the true expression of the gospel of God in the scriptures. Following a meeting in May 1970 with a small group of this number, it was decided that, with God's enabling, a church of "Reformed" and "Baptistic" persuasion be constituted. The necessities of such a move were seen to, and for our own part we returned to Inverness in the November of that year, when I took up the pastoral office of the church
