President of South Wales Baptist College says we have a lot in common
Wearing a white wrist band representing an international movement against poverty, Dr. John Weaver arranged transparencies on a projector as he addressed Campbell University’s Pastors School recently. The transparencies contained ecological statistics concerning the earth’s climate, the tropical rain forests, the increase in world population and the depletion of world resources. A scientist and educator, Dr. Weaver is also an ordained minister and principal of South Wales Baptist College in Cardiff, Wales. His message to the group was the failure of Christians to be good stewards of the earth.
“Today, we live in a throw-away society,” he said. So much of what we use in our daily lives is tossed out, designed to wear out, disposable. We cut down our forests, pollute the atmosphere with gas emissions and use up the world’s resources. We are consuming the capital upon which our life is based.”
By all appearances, Dr. Weaver could be called an activist as well as an educator and theologian. He refuses to buy goods which are not fairly traded; is an aggressive recycler; and takes every opportunity to speak out on the issues of pollution and conservation.

1999 McCandless Lecture
The McCandless Lecture is given each year in partnership with Georgetown Baptist College, Kentucky, in honour of O. Carlysle and June McCandless. This year's lecturer was Professor Jim McCormick, recently retired Professor of Art at Georgetown, on the theme of `The Reclassification of Ingres as a Romantic'. The college has also been delighted to have received Professor and Mrs McCormick for two terms' sabbatical leave this year.
New ministerial students
Ten new students began their course of preparation for ministry among Baptist churches this year, which means that the ministerial group now numbers 29, one short of the intended maximum. There are almost equal proportions of residential and church-based students, and the group includes seven women.

Some account of the Angus Library
1. Historical background of the library
The original heart of the Angus Library was a large collection of printed and manuscript works by English Baptists and other Nonconformists dating from the early 17th Century left to Regent's Park College by Dr. Joseph Angus, Principal of the College from 1849 to 1893 and later catalogued and enlarged by Dr. George Pearce Gould, Principal 1896-1920. Other significant collections have meanwhile been deposited with or donated to the library and in 1985 the Baptist Union Library, which had earlier incorporated the Baptist Historical Society's Library of manuscript and early printed Baptist materials, became part of the Angus Library. In the summer of 1989, when the Baptist Union and the Baptist Missionary Society moved their offices out of London to new joint premises in Didcot, the archives of the B.M.S. were deposited with the Angus Library and the various collections were brought together and relocated in three large rooms of mobile shelving and one smaller room in the basement of the College. The Angus complex now includes a research room both for College research students and for visitors to the Angus Library. The Library is serviced by two part-time posts: the Librarian for 4 days per week and the Archivist for 2 days per week.

BWA meeting a reunion for some
By Marv Knox Texas Baptist Standard BIRMINGHAM, England-Paul and Eveline Miller had good reason to feel a sense of deja vu during the Baptist World Alliance's (BWA) centennial congress. They attended the 1955 BWA congress in London during their honeymoon. And they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary during the BWA congress in Birmingham this summer. While most other delegates' BWA experiences weren't nearly so historically symmetrical, they also expressed joy and gratitude to attend the worldwide gathering of Baptists from more than 200 conventions or unions. The Millers put off their honeymoon from October 1954 until the summer of '55, and they stalled on their golden anniversary, just so they could celebrate at the BWA again, Paul Miller said. He attended his first BWA congress as a youngster in1939 in Atlanta when George W. Truett of Dallas, a distant cousin, was alliance president. And as a couple, the Millers have been to about 10 BWA congresses since their honeymoon. They served as missionaries at the Nigeria Baptist Theological Seminary in Africa for 30 years before retiring to Fort Worth.

Concern for poor at heart of who God is, panel says
By Robert O'Brien Associated Baptist Press BIRMINGHAM, England - The poor will always be with us, Jesus said. Does that mean we should ignore them? "Certainly not," said Graham Sparkes of the Baptist Union of Great Britain. So what are Baptist Christians going to do about it? "We as Baptists focus on what the Bible says as we respond to the needs of the world," Sparkes told a focus group on the poor during the Baptist Centenary World Congress in Birmingham, England. "Poverty is the context in which the gospel must be proclaimed," he said, citing many biblical passages. "A concern for the poor is at the heart of who God is and what the Bible has to say. The Bible, as Jim Wallis of Sojourners has said, 'is biased for the poor and oppressed.'" Ministering to the poor is an imperative for Christians, said Sparkes and four other focus group leaders - Vivienne Lassetter of the Baptist Union of Great Britain; Stan Rand of the Jubilee Debt Campaign; Nigel Varndell of Christian Aid; and Michael Smitheran of the Micah Challenge. The gap between the rich and the poor grows ever wider, the panelists said, because of at least five complex factors that fuel each other: disasters, economic injustice and trade and debt issues, HIV/AIDS, conflicts and wars, and widespread corruption, speakers said.

"Building God's Mission in Europe" The EBF General Council Meeting in Radosc, Poland
Each September, European Baptist leaders gather for three days of prayer, fellowship, and the sharing of information. This year the meeting was held 24-28 September in Radosc, Poland, and hosted by the Baptist Union of Poland and its president, Andrzej Severyn and general secretary Leszek Wakula. More than 130 participants attended representing almost all Baptist unions in Europe and several from the Middle East. Also present were some of the organizations that partner with the EBF.
This year's theme, "Building God's Mission in Europe," was specially chosen due to the tremendous growth that is being witnessed on several parts of the continent.

Baptist Union of Wales Baptist Union of Wales (Undeb Bedydd wyr Cymru) - a fellowship of Baptist churches in Wales. A General Baptist minister, Hugh Evans, was once of the first Baptists to preach in Wales (ca. 1646). In 1649 John Miles (1621-1683) and Thomas Proud were instrumental in forming a church at Ilston. Miles and Proud were connected to the Particular Baptists in London. In 1650 three Baptist congregations held the first general meeting of Baptists in Wales. The national union was organized in 1866. One of the most notable Welsh Baptist ministers was Christmas Evans (1766-1838). The Baptist Union of Wales is a member of The Evangelical Alliance Wales, The Free Church Council, Cytûn (Churches Together in Wales), the European Baptist Federation, and the Baptist World Alliance. Baptist Union headquarters are in Swansea, West Glamorgan. In 1995 the Union had 544 congregations with 25,384 members. 146 of these churches (with 9552 members) held dual membership in the Baptist Union of Great Britain. Though English is spoken by most citizens of Wales, many churches hold their services in their native Welsh tongue.

Arising in England in the 17th century Puritan Reform movement, Baptists are known for believers' baptism by immersion and for independent congregations. During the 18th century Great Awakening in America, Baptist churches developed in a regional style. Authority in faith and practice rests in the local congregations of baptized believers. Worship usually features a sermon explaining the Bible, prayers, and hymn singing. Today Baptist churches are found in most countries of the world. The Archbishop of Canterbury, the two most senior Roman Catholic archbishops, an Orthodox archbishop, Protestant officials and leaders of the Muslim, Sikh and Jewish communities were among 11 religious leaders whose plea was disregarded. They had warned that the issue had not been fully addressed and that "one slight miscalculation" could lead to irreversible implications for future generations. The move was approved on January 22 by a big majority in the upper chamber, the House of Lords, following its acceptance in December by the lower chamber, the House of Commons.
