Around 2150 churches belong to the baptist union of great britain, each of themself funding and the majority of them financially independent.

The Baptist Faith Introduction An Introduction to the Baptist Faith The Baptist Family Individual Church Members Local Baptist Churches ... The Worldwide Family An Introduction to the Baptist Faith Baptists are radicals in the sense that they believe in returning to the roots of Christian faith ( note that the English word 'radical' comes from the Latin word 'radix' which means root). This means that they seek to root their life together in the Biblical pattern of being the church. Unlike the great state churches of Europe - Anglican, Lutheran and reformed - Baptists have always emphasised the need for personal faith. Instead of baptising babies, Baptists have reserved baptism for those who are able to make a personal confession of Jesus as Lord and Saviour. In the 16th Century when the modern Baptist movement was born, this emphasis on personal faith was perceived as a threat to the state church, to which all were expected to belong, with or without faith. In 17th Century England, Baptists refused to conform and be members of the Church of England, arguing that Christ, and not the King (or Queen), was head of the church. Baptists have been described as 'Dissenters' or 'nonconformists' - they stand in the 'Free Church' tradition. Persecuted for their beliefs throughout the 17th Century, Baptists at one stage developed into two 'streams' of theological thought: the 'General' Baptists believed that when Christ died on the cross, He died for everyone in 'general'; the 'Particular' Baptists, however, believed that Christ died for the 'elect' i.e. a 'particular' group of people. Later these two streams came together to form the present Baptist Union of Great Britain.

Baptists in the Ecumenical Context
A paper presented by Faith Bowers of Bloomsbury Central Baptist Church London to the BWA Congress Heritage Commission Focus Group
6 January 2000 In Adelaide just before Christmas we went to a musical play, `Two from Galilee', about Mary and Joseph and the birth of Jesus. It was described as `a ministry project of the Rostrevor Baptist Church'. Staged at the university, it had a cast of 45, plus a further 30 in the crew, drawn from 25 Christian bodies - six more Baptist churches, and others from right across the Christian spectrum from the Christian Revival Crusade to Roman Catholic. A cast member told us the next Sunday how they all prayed together for forty minutes before each performance, chiefly that some in the audience would be moved to respond to the Gospel. Here were Baptists in the ecumenical context - working happily with other Christians to spread the Gospel. I come from England, where ecumenism is in a fairly advanced state. The primary ecumenical drive was a concern for mission and Baptists therefore felt it was right to join with others to that end. English Baptists have long co-operated with other mainstream Protestant dissenters and with many Anglicans. In 1948 the BUGB (Baptist Union of Great Britain) Secretary, M.E. Aubrey, was one of the committee of fourteen that drafted the WCC constitution, as a forum for discussion, communication and joint witness.

Who are the Baptists?
England
Organised Baptist life in England had two distinct beginnings. In 1611 Thomas Helwys John Smyth Section of The Mistery of Iniquity addressed to the English king, pointing out that
"the king is but an earthly king and he hath not authority as a king but in earthly causes."
The successors of Helwys and his friends became known as General Baptists Particular Baptists New Connexion Dan Taylor Baptist Union of Great Britain Strict Baptists , usually, and have three regional Associations of Strict Baptist Churches. The Strict Baptist Assembly continued until 1976 when they joined the Assembly of baptised churches holding the Calvinistic doctrine of Sovereign Grace to form the Grace Baptist Assembly. The Baptist denomination has, over the years, spread to many lands and is today one of the largest Protestant communions in the world, linked in the fellowship of the Baptist World Alliance , formed in 1905.

Problems of Cataloging Denominational Materials
By Leo T. Crismon
Southern Baptist Seminary From the Proceedings, Fifth Annual Conference of ATLA,
Rochester, N.Y., June 13, 1951
(Updated version of this document was compiled by Kathy Sylvest and Pat Brown, 2002)
Where Denominational Literature Can be Found The idea of the project grew out of my own difficulty in cataloging materials on some of the religious denominations in our country and in other countries because I did not find a place for them in the Dewey Decimal Classification system or in the index to Dewey and because I did not know how they were related to major denominations recognized by Dewey. On the other hand I realize that much material which I catalog as routine may be difficult for others who may not be familiar with it. So it seems that librarians of the various denominational groups can help each other in this matter. .. …It would also be helpful to have answered such questions as: What are the best histories, biographies, and bibliographies of the group? How are statistical materials preserved, printed, etc.? What languages besides English are necessary to be known to be able to do research in the materials? Where are the best collections of materials in historical societies, theological seminaries, etc.?
