The Baptist World Congress is held every five years when members of the Baptist World Alliance (BWA) meet to worship and share together as Baptist Christians. The BWA was formed at the first ever Baptist World Congress in London in July 1905. Initially based in London, America became the home of the BWA headquarters in 1947 where it has stayed ever since. Today the BWA is a fellowship of 211 Baptist unions and conventions comprising a membership of more than 34 million baptised believers with a worshipping community of 80 million. The BWA aims to unite Baptists worldwide, to lead in evangelism, respond to people in need (through Baptist World Aid) and defend human rights and religious liberty.
A hundred years on from the first Congress, the nineteenth Baptist World Congress is being held in Birmingham. Over 12,000 people from 112 countries are expected to attend. Jimmy Carter, who was President of the United States from 1976-1980, will arrive on Saturday 30 July. He will be a guest speaker at a Friends of the BWA lunch on Saturday afternoon and will present a BWA Human Rights Award in the Saturday evening celebrations at the National Indoor Arena (NIA).

    Baptists in the United Kingdom
The origins of the modern Baptist movement are to be found in the European radical reformation of the early sixteenth century.Small groups grew up known as Anabaptists. Amongst other things these early groups only baptized believers on confession of faith holding that this was the New Testament pattern. They believed in the separation of church and state, religious liberty, and almost all were avowedly pacifist. In the early years of the seventeenth century a small group of people left the oppression of Great Britain to seek religious freedom in Amsterdam. They formed themselves into a church under the leadership of John Smyth (c.1554 - 1612) and Thomas Helwys, here they came under the influence of churches in the Mennonite tradition (an Anabaptist group named after Menno Simons 1496 - 1561), receiving believers baptism. In 1611 Thomas Helwys led the group back from Holland. Helwys was the author of ‘The Mistery of Iniquity’, the first English printed book to plead for full religious freedom. In this work Helwys argued for state and religion to be separated and argued for freedom of religion for all, specifically including in this Islamic, Judaic, and atheistic belief. The successors of Helwys and his friends became known as the General Baptists. They were Arminian in theology and their church order was independent, with the appointment of inter-congregational officials known as ‘Messengers’.In 1633 a group connected with a Calvinistic Separatist church in London broke away on adopting believer’s baptism. This was the origin of the Particular Baptists. They remained Calvinistic in theology but their church order was of the independent type.

Baptist churches are found in almost every country in the world and have about 40 million members worldwide. In Britain 2,150 churches belong to the Baptist Union of Great Britain, between them having 150,000 members. The name "Baptist" comes from the Baptist practice of immersion in water. It was coined in the seventeenth century by opponents to the new movement but rejected by followers themselves. It wasn't until the nineteenth century that Baptists accepted the use of the label to describe themselves. History The roots of the Baptist movement date back to the sixteenth century and the post-Reformation period, although the first Baptist congregation appeared in 1609 in Holland. It was here that the Church of England minister, John Smyth, performed a radical and scandalous act of baptising himself by pouring water on his head. He than baptised his fellow reformer, Thomas Helwys and other members of the congregation. Smyth and Helwys had left England for Holland in 1607 after being persecuted for wanting to purify the Church of England of all traces of Roman Catholicism. Both Smyth and Helwys had joined a group of "Separatists" in Gainsborough in 1606. Their three core beliefs went on to shape later Baptists. They were:
