Welcome People Events Journal ... Archives Founded in 1908, the Society seeks to advance awareness of Baptist history and principles by promoting lectures, summer schools and publications; by offering an advice and information service and by bringing heritage issues to the attention of the Baptist Union of Great Britain and its member churches. Membership of the Society embraces a wide range of interests including ministers and church leaders, church members, tutors and lecturers, local church historians as well as institutions such as universities, libraries and theological colleges. One important aim of the Society is to make widely available material about Baptist history written by Baptists. There is a constant need to consider the way in which Baptist principles have been rooted in practice in the lives of women and men. One way this is achieved is through the Quarterly magazine and another through our range of publications. Seven volumes of Transactions and thirty-six volumes of the Baptist Quarterly with cumulative indices have been published.

Baptist churches are part of a Christian movement often regarded as an Evangelical Protestant denomination . Baptists emphasize a believer's baptism by full immersion, which is performed after a profession of faith in Jesus as Lord and Savior. A congregational governance system gives autonomy to individual local Baptist churches, which are sometimes associated in organizations such as the Southern Baptist Convention . In the late 1990s, there were about 43 million Baptists worldwide with about 33 million in the United States

Baptist Union of Great Britain Following the decision of the British Government to join the United States in a war against Iraq, the Council of the Baptist Union of Great Britain meeting on 26 March 2003 affirmed the following key messages: * We urge that even in the midst of violence and conflict, the voices calling for peace are heard. The regime of Saddam Hussein is not one we support in any way. However, we lament the failure of war with the misery and suffering that inevitably results, and recall the gospel imperative to engage in the costly task of peacemaking. * We call upon those engaged in war to be fully mindful of humanitarian law, including the Geneva Conventions and Protocols as they affect the conduct of war and the treatment of civilians. We trust that war will be short-lived and that the ordinary people of Iraq will be protected. * We pray for the military personnel and their families, together with the chaplains who are serving in the three Armed Services. We recognise the difficult and demanding ministry that they are called upon to exercise at this time. * We urge that every effort is made to bring humanitarian relief to the people of Iraq as soon as possible, and commit ourselves to offer help with this task.

Baptist Union of Great Britain Text of letter to the Prime Minister (20 September 2002) Dear Mr Blair Over the past year, there have been many of us within the Baptist Union of Great Britain who have welcomed the steps you have sought to take in order to create a global vision for justice and peace. As you said at the last Labour Party conference, we live in an interdependent world where isolationism is not an option. It is for this reason that we view with deep concern the threatened military action against Iraq. While it may be possible to produce evidence of the threat posed by Saddam Hussein, it is vital that a proper consensus be developed through the United Nations in order to determine the course of action that should be taken. We recognise that the regime in Iraq has no moral validity. However, we believe that the use of a pre-emptive strike by one sovereign state against another would be a serious breach of the United Nations Charter, setting a very dangerous precedent. We would also urge that the situation in Iraq be set in a wider context. If we bring yet further violence into this region of the world, it is our contention that this can only deepen the mistrust, divisions and hatred that already provide the breeding ground for terrorism. It must always be remembered that war is a sign of failure, bringing with it death and destruction, poverty and fear. Military conflict cannot address root injustices and inequalities, and cannot of itself result in a true peace and security for all.
