WORTH A READ?
Rev Bill Stirling, of Broadwood Baptist Church, has sent us the following two book reviews, for your interest:
“The Guide – Truth Under Attack” – vol.1 – Evangelical Press. Eryl Davies - £8.00 – 400 pages
The “primary reason” Davies gives for writing this volume (number one in a series of three) is this: “... in the context of evangelism I met increasing numbers of people belonging to the cults ... I found it helpful to acquaint myself with their teaching.” The heart of everyone involved in evangelism will leap for joy at the availability of this indispensable resource: it meets such a practical need.
In section A and B, Davies deals with 21 churches and movements. Section C with “Personal and pastoral challenges”, followed by a helpful postscript “Summary of major Biblical doctrines”.

Baptist Practices In the following e-mail exchange, the e-mailer's comments are in black and enclosed in "greater than" and "lesser than" signs. My comments are in red In the chapter on baptism in your Scripture Workbook , in support of believers-only-baptism you state that (1) infants "are incapable of trusting Christ" and (2) infants "have no old life needing crucified." It is looking at it from a human perspective. IOW, we cannot "see" someone being regenerated within, but we can hear their confession of faith, at least in someone old enough to make such a confession. And Baptist believe it is only those who have confessed Christ who should be baptized. Personally, I have always thought it was Reformed/ paedo-Baptists who were being inconsistent. Not all children of elect people are necessarily elect (Matt 3:9; John 1:13). So to baptize someone just because their parent(s) are Christians is being inconsistent in my mind. Of course, this all relates to the issue of "covenant theology." See the three part article by Bob Wright on this subject on my site [ Historical Doubts Concerning One "Covenant of Grace"

Easter Sunday and ministers of the cloth come to bless the Fremantle picket by candlelight.
Reverend Howard McCallum from Flying Angels calls for peace and justice on behalf of sacked waterside workers. The church choir sings 'The Internationale'.
Church leaders played a prominent role on the picket lines, holding regular Sunday services to provide spiritual support. Like the children playing in their crèche, the entertainers, artists and actors, it was in stark contrast to the dogs, the hooded guards, the helicopters and search lights, the confrontation and the war of words through the padlocked gates - as different as night and day.
"WA was the only state to use tactical response units against civilians," said assistant National Secretary Paddy Crumlin. "It was extraordinary stuff. At the same time, the port authority thumbed its nose at their own regulations by allowing helicopters to sweep in over the crowd onto the Patrick wharves, bringing in scabs and managers."
This soon stopped after towage workers took industrial action over safety concerns.

MR M. RAHILLY: I seek leave to appear for the respondent to the industrial dispute whoever that may be. The notification appears to name the Baptist Union of Victoria as the respondent but refers to the circumstances of employment by employees of Baptist Community Care Limited. I am not entirely sure what the intent of the HSUA is in relation to the matter or who, indeed, the respondent ought to be. But in any event I do appear for the respondent, Commissioner.
THE COMMISSIONER: Well, it's a lovely day, the sun is shining, the birds are singing and I'm confused because Mr Rahilly, in seeking leave, is not quite sure who he represents. But I note that although the HSUA is here according to this, the cover says it is the ASU versus the Baptist Union of Australia.

THE BAPTIST UNION IN AUSTRALIA. Reading the material from the Baptist Church is beginning to be like reading a UN or NWO propaganda sheet. Can this be really happening? We are viewing an almost total eclipse of the Light of God through His Word, a total revolt against Biblical instructions and God’s world-view in our churches, and no one seems to care, or even know what is going on! In the September 1996 newsletter from Australian Baptist World Aid, the caption of the leading article is: “This year of 1996 has been declared the International Year of Eradication of Poverty”, then the article deals with the suggestion to extend the Year to a decade. Then there are comments about JUBILEE, “Year of Restitution”. Despatch has dealt earlier with these fake redistributions of the worlds’ wealth initiatives of the NWO - New Age socialism for a New World. More about the United Nations inside the Baptist leaflet. (See Despatch Vol. 7:2 26-53.... for fuller expose on JUBILEE, hopefully online in near future). "The Queensland Baptist", September 1996, has news of a Christian ‘counsellor’ on our own Sunshine Coast who will be promoting services in a People Helper Division. This man is a Bachelor in Social Science Psychology. He worked for a government department of Community Services; he teaches the horrific New Age Human Relationships (HRE) program at a primary school here; he has worked as a Adolescent and Family counsellor, psychology. Dear friends ALL these methods and counselling techniques are anti-biblical! When will people realise and go back to God’s Word as the Truth for peoples’ lives? Does anyone these days compare the teachings of the Scriptures with the current, trendy psychological trash? We suggest the following books worth reading, they will sort out a lot of wrong teaching.

John Mark Ministries Priscillas Friends WWW
E. Roberts-Thomson [2] He led Bible study and prayer sessions at the 90th Annual Assembly of the Baptist Union of Victoria in 1952.[54] Then in November 1952 he was appointed the third Principal of the New Zealand Baptist College, to commence from the beginning of 1954.[55] Events in New Zealand brought forward the date; he concluded his ministry at Brunswick on January 31, 1953, and soon after sailed for Auckland.[56] Academic career Edward's academic career began long before 1953. He had demonstrated strong scholarly aptitude over many years. He had studied at the Baptist College of Victoria, Melbourne University, Melbourne College of Divinity, Bristol Baptist College, Western College of Theology and Bristol University.[57] An adaptation of his Bristol Master of Arts thesis, titled Baptists and Disciples of Christ, was published in 1948 by Carey Kingsgate Press. In it he appears to favour union of "immersionist" churches on the ground that unity would lead to numerical strength.[58] He had also taught at the Baptist College of Victoria. The decade of the 1940s was beset by controversy and crisis for New Zealand Baptists, culminating in the forced resignation of Rev Luke Jenkins, the second Principal of the denominational college, which had opened in 1926. A 37-year-old British Baptist, Jenkins had trained at Regents Park, Oxford, and successfully pastored churches in England and Wales. The New Zealand Baptist described him as "keenly evangelical, a convinced Baptist, possessed of evident qualities of leadership, and has a brilliant scholastic career." [59] What many were not aware of was that Jenkins was a pacifist (while a majority of the students were ex-servicemen), he had no lecturing experience, he leaned toward theological liberalism (his MA thesis was on the psychology of prayer), he supported the liberal-leaning Student Christian Movement rather than the staunchly evangelical Intervarsity Fellowship, and - scandalously - his wife smoked tobacco.

Baptist Church
9 Pakington Street, St Kilda In contrast to the exclusivity of the Particular Baptists and the relative grandeur of their church, a General Baptist congregation was established in the valley below St Kilda Hill amidst poor working-class homes. General Baptists believe Christ died for everyone. For thirty-five years, this group met in halls rented from various organisations such as the Australian Natives Association, and in the St Kilda Town Hall. In 1907 a new minister, acting against the advice of the church leaders, bought a block of land in his own name. Eight years later, a Sunday school hall was built on the block. The foundation stone was laid by George Doery, the president of the Baptist Union of Victoria, on 27 March 1915. W. Rain was the architect and H. R. Stewart was the minister. The building was intended as a precursor to the church that would be built when there was sufficient money. There never was enough money — the congregation consisted mainly of poor workers and Baptists rejected any government assistance for the construction of churches.
