A THUMBNAIL SKETCH OF
SEVENTH DAY BAPTISTS
1650 - PRESENT

Seventh Day Baptists
Seventh Day Baptists date their origin with the mid-17th century separatist movement in England. With the renewed emphasis on the Scriptures for Free Church doctrine and practice, men such as James Ockford, William Saller, Peter Chamberlain, Francis Bampfield, Edward and Joseph Stennett concluded that the keeping of the seventh day Sabbath was an inescapable requirement of biblical Christianity. Some maintained membership within the Baptist fellowship and simply added the private Sabbath observance to their other shared convictions. As the power of the state was used to enforce conformity to a common day of worship, separation became necessary. The first separate church of record was the Mill Yard church founded about 1650 in London.
The study of the Scriptures in America brought Samuel and Tacy Hubbard to the Baptist principle of believer’s baptism in 1647, and membership in the First Baptist Church of Newport, Rhode Island. Beginning in 1665, their family and several others became convinced of the seventh day Sabbath and joined in fellowship with Stephen Mumford and his wife who had held Sabbath convictions while members of a Baptist church in Tewksbury, England. When two couples gave up their Sabbath convictions, the others found it difficult to share communion with them within First Baptist. Thus five members joined with the Mumfords in a covenant relationship, establishing the first Seventh Day Baptist Church in America in December, 1671. Even after this seperation, close fellowship with other Baptists remained.

Sun Valley Community Church - The Baptist General Conference What is the Baptist General Conference (BGC)? It is a voluntary association of people like you and me in over 1000 churches across America who share the same beliefs (including biblical inerrancy, church planting and international missionary thrusts) and eagerly seek to accomplish GodÕs purposes in life, community, and the world. The stated purpose of the Conference is to glorify God by making disciples of all peoples Ñ through intentional outreach and starting new churches. The Conference is heavily committed to starting new churches and to foreign missions. From 2000 to 2004, about 200 new churches were started in the U.S., and at present there are over 150 missionaries in 21 nations around the world. Our support of conference ministries is enthusiastic, but not exclusive. We believe God is using many organizations to further His Kingdom. It was the Baptist General Conference who gave the seed money to start Sun Valley. They also purchased our property 10 years before we purchased it from them in order to sell it to us. The Conference creates training opportunities, support and recovery networks and fellowships of Pastors and wives to ensure the health and vibrancy of the church and pastoral staff. We Took a Good Stand and Made a Bad Mistake
Reflections on the Baptist General Conference Annual Meeting, St Paul
July 5, 2000 One of the most significant issues before us as a Conference at the recent annual meeting was whether we would embrace open theism as part of our corporate identity. Open theism teaches that God does not know all that shall come to pass. It says that God's creatures make free choices which do not exist to be known before they are made. God does not know with certainty what his free creatures will choose before they choose. The reason this became an issue in the Baptist General Conference is that at least one influential Bethel faculty member teaches and defends this view. What position did the Conference take on this issue? We passed two resolutions that seem contrary to each other. In fact, they are not necessarily contrary but rather point to a profound mistake in theological and historical judgment. The first resolution we passed said: Be it resolved that we, the delegates of the Baptist General Conference (who are also the delegates of Bethel College and Seminary) affirm that God's knowledge of all past, present and future events is exhaustive; and, we also believe that the "openness" view of God's foreknowledge is contrary to our fellowship's historic understanding of God's omniscience.
