  • Our Business In A Nutshell We're a group of churches (currently about 875 of them) who cooperate to help people in the U.S. and other countries hear and understand the good news of Jesus Christ as it is explained in the Bible. The good news is this : God has made a way for the pain and self-centeredness of people to be removed forever. That way is through the birth, life, death and resurrection of Jesus. Any man, woman, young person or child who begins to understand that God loves them, even though they deliberately choose to think and do wrong things, may turn to Jesus and find forgiveness and the help to change. God is able to forgive anyone who comes to Him because, in His death, Jesus personally suffered every person's punishment for wrongdoing. That's why He is called the Savior of the world. His resurrection, on the other hand, is proof that God is not only able to forgive but to remake a person's life.

Welcome to the Baptist General Conference of Canada. We are a movement of 102 Canadian Churches stretching from Vancouver Island to Nova Scotia. We are baptistic in theology and gentle in spirit. Our background can be traced to the immigration of Swedish pietists coming to Canada in the late 1800's. Our congregations reflect a broad variety of culture and traditions. Some are postmodern in thinking and methodology, others are very traditional. Some are filled with long term Canadians, others reflect the mosaic that Canada has become in this last generation. We speak English, French, Mandarin, Tagalog, Spanish, Cantonese and maybe even one or two other languages on any given Sunday in our movement.
We are looking to begin churches wherever we sense God opening the door to further ministry. Some of our congregations are large (over 1000 attenders) and located in urban areas but many of our congregations are smaller (under 150) and carry out faithful ministry in the rural parts of our nation.
Organizationally, our national office is located in Edmonton, AB. Our Executive Director is Jamey McDonald. It is the role of the national office

Swede-Finns and the Baptist General Conference
by Clifford Anderson Most of us know that immigrant Swedes were the beginning of the Baptist General Conference. But most of us don't know the part that Swede-Finns played in the development of our denomination. Swede-Finns were Swedish-speaking people who lived in a part of Finland just across the Gulf of Bothnia from Sweden. Signs in some of those town are still in both Swedish and Finnish. (Finnish is not related to the other Scandinavian languages but is more closely related to Hungarian and Estonian.) Many of the people living in this section of Finland now speak both Swedish and Finnish.
East Little Fork Baptist Church Sweden was once a world power and after the 12th century had strong influence over the territory of Finland. Many Swedes settled its western area. However, in 1809 Russia gained control of Finland until 1917 when Finland won its independence.

In , Gustaf Palmquist emigrated from Sweden to the United States . Forty-seven days after his arrival, he and 3 others organized a Swedish Baptist church in Rock Island, Illinois . Frederick Nilsson, who was instrumental in leading Palmquist to Baptist views, arrived in America the next year with 21 immigrants. Some of these united with the Rock Island church, while others organized a church at Houston, Minnesota . Nilsson traveled widely, founding and strengthening churches. Anders Wiberg was another pioneer among these churches from 1852 to , when he returned to Sweden as a missionary. Christian experience was a major emphasis among these Swedish Baptists, and they prospered from the awakenings in the 19th century. Immigration, aggressive evangelism and conversion through revivals brought rapid growth. John Edgren founded
