to the Bahá'í Faith in Iran Some Preliminary Observations Susan Stiles Maneck Abstract
In the period between 1877-1921 significant numbers of non-Muslims converted to the Bahá'í Faith in Iran. This was an essential development for the emergence of the Bahá'í Faith as an independent religion possessing a distinct identity apart from Islam. These conversions were largely confined to the Zoroastrian and Jewish communities and did not involve Iran's largest religious minority, the Christians. This study attempts to address some of the factors that were involved in this conversion process. These will include the manner in which Bahá'ís made the transition from Islamic particularism to a universalism that would attract non-Muslims, as well as the manner in which actual conversions took place and the factors surrounding them. Major emphasis will be placed upon examining what factors may have inclined certain minorities rather than others to convert. T he Jewish conversion movement began in Hamadan around 1877, and by 1884, according to the historian of Persian Jewry Habib Levy, involved some one hundred and fifty of the eight-hundred Jewish households there (

An Introduction to
THE BAHA'I FAITH
The Baha'i Faith is a worldwide religion based on the teachings of Baha'u'llah (1817-1892). He stated that the time had come for the people of the world to put aside their differences and to unite on the basis of the teachings that he had brought. In the brief course of its 150-year history, the Baha'i Faith has transformed itself from an obscure Middle Eastern sect into a fast-growing religion that has established itself in every country of the world and is rapidly emerging out of obscurity to take its place alongside older more established world religions. The religion has grown and developed greatly in terms of its numerical strength, geographical spread, and community organisation. The largest Baha'i communities are now in South Asia, Africa, Latin America, and (relative to the size of the population) in some of the islands of the Pacific. In these parts of the world, some villages and areas are more or less completely Baha'i. Here the Baha'is have initiated educational, agricultural and community development projects. The latest available official Baha'i statistics (1994) state that there are between 5 and 6 million Baha'is in the world; that Baha'is live in over 110,000 localities; that there are over 17,000 places where there are organized Baha'i communities with elected local councils (Local Spiritual Assemblies); and 172 national elected bodies (National Spiritual Assemblies). We desire but the good of the world and happiness of the nations.... That all nations should become one in faith and all men as brothers; that the bonds of affection and unity between the sons of men should be strengthened; that diversity of religion should cease, and differences of race be annulled... Yet so it shall be; these fruitless strifes, these ruinous wars shall pass away, and the "Most Great Peace" shall come.... These strifes and this bloodshed and discord must cease, and all men be as one kindred and one family.... Let not a man glory in this, that he loves his country; let him rather glory in this, that he loves his kind.... (words spoken by Baha'u'llah to Prof. E.G. Browne of Cambridge University in 1890)

NINE THINGS YOU WILL KNOW WHEN YOU ARE A BAHA'I:
  • You have realized that you alone are responsible for your spiritual growth, not your preacher, parents or friends. You must develop your own relationship with God. You have hope for the future of the world with spiritual solutions that will work. You have embraced an embryonic world community based on cultural acceptance, not exclusivity, a human family united but rich in diversity. You believe that humankind is one; that all are equal in the sight of God. You believe in a Higher Power, a Benevolent Force called God, or Allah, or Jehovah. You see that all religions share a common foundation. You have fallen in love with the Baha'i Writings and their Author, God's latest Messenger, Baha'u'llah (in English, "The Glory of God"). You have come to realize that women and men are equal, that spiritual qualities are more important than physical ones. You know in your heart that science and religion are not contradictory.

This is a brilliant century. Eyes are now open to the beauty of the oneness of humanity, of love and of brotherhood. The darkness of suppression will disappear and the light of unity will shine. We cannot bring love and unity to pass merely by talking of it. Knowledge is not enough. Wealth, science, education are good, we know: but we must also work and study to bring to maturity the fruit of knowledge. (Abdu'l-Baha, Abdu'l-Baha in London, p. 54)

THE BAHA'I FAITH A Portrait by Dr. Robert H. Stockman
Director of Research, Baha'i National Center, Wilmette, Illinois
The Baha'i Faith is an independent world religion now in the 150th year of its existence. According to the Encyclopedia Britannica Yearbook it is the second most widely spread religion in the world, with five million members residing in 232 countries and dependent territories, and national spiritual assemblies (national Baha'i governing bodies) in 172. The Baha'i Faith began in Iran. Its history is intimately connected with the lives of its leading figures: Ali-Muhammad, titled the Bab Born in southern Iran in 1819, in 1844 he announced that he was the promised one or Mahdi expected by Muslims. He wrote scriptures in which he promulgated a new calendar, new religious laws and new social norms. Opposed by Iran's Muslim clergy and ultimately by its government, thousands of the Bab's followers were killed; in 1850 the Bab himself was put to death. Mirza Husayn-`Ali, titled Baha'u'llah

The Bahá'í House of Worship in Wilmette, Illinois (in Chicago's northern suburbs) is known as the "Mother Temple of the West", since it was the first House of Worship constructed in the Western Hemisphere. It was the second House of Worship to be constructed and is the oldest one still standing (the first one, in 'I sh qábád, was confiscated and ultimately destroyed by Soviet authorities).

The Bahai faith is often included in the " New Age " family of cults Historically, it is a sect or cult derived from Islam . Yet like many new age groups, it attempts to absorb Christianity by claiming that Christianity was a phase in the overall evolution of true spirituality and faith. It tries to build on Christianity with repeated references to Jesus and the ethical teachings of the Christian faith. The belief of the Shi'ite division of Islam is that a "messiah" or Imam will arise at the end time and usher in a world of peace. In 1844, Mizra Ali Muhammed was convinced that God had called him to a similar ministry as John the Baptist. He assumed the title "the Bab" which means "the gate." Some feel that he actually believed he was the Imam. His charisma and message began to draw many. J.E. Esslemont writes of the Bab, "The Bab was the manifestation of God, the Founder of an independent religion," (

Home The Bahá’í Faith in Nashville The Bahá'í Faith has been an active part of religious and social life in Middle Tennessee since the 1930's. We are a recognized advocate for spiritual solutions based on the Teachings of Bahá'u'lláh on issues such as the elimination of all forms of prejudice with an emphasis on race unity, the equality of women and men, the spiritual education of children, the importance of family cohesion, and the establishment of world peace. Bahá'u'lláh is God’s Messenger for this day, a day in which all humanity is spiritually mature and can visualize the reality of uniting to build the Kingdom of God on Earth. Teachings on Christ Bahá'u'lláh fulfills the paradoxical promises of Christ's return "in the Glory of the Father" and as a "thief in the night." That the Faith was founded in 1844 relates to numerous Christian prophecies. Bahá'ís note, for example, that central Africa was finally opened to Christianity in the 1840s, and that event was widely seen as fulfilling the promise that Christ would return after "the Gospel had been preached 'to all nations.'" In Bahá'u'lláh's teachings Bahá'ís see fulfillment of Christ's promise to bring all people together so that "there shall be one fold, and one shepherd."
