Search Agnosticism / Atheism Affirming Humanism Dateline: September 23, 1998 Considering the level and intensity of attacks levied against humanism by religious conservatives in the media, from the pulpit, and on the internet, one might be lead to think that there is something to all of their allegations. But is there? In an intermittent series of essays, I intend to address a variety of those allegations and examine whether or not they enjoy a solid foundation. One common misconception which is often seen being bandied about is the idea that humanism embodies some sort of dogmatic creed . Most humanists will find this laughable, but they should not shrug it off too quickly. Enough people actually believe it that we really need to deal with it. There are any number of documents, historical and contemporary, which attempt to communicate what humanism is all about - are these creeds? Are they dogmatic? Some definitely think that such documents "read like creeds," and then proceed to assume that if they read like creeds, then they must be creeds. Why? The simplest explanation would be that they are so used to statements of beliefs actually

    Atheism and pantheism: religious atheists
Principles of scientific pantheism* by Paul Harrison. Featured, Dec. 12, 1996. Are you a pantheist? Find out now at Scientific Pantheism.
Pantheists don't just want to be negative about Gods and heavens beyond this world. They want to be enthusiastically positive about this life, this earth, this universe. Many famous atheists have had the same feelings.
Theists and other critics have often regarded pantheism as atheism in disguise. Yet atheists often mistrust pantheism and see it as theism in disguise. Some atheists are so concerned with combatting the enemy - theism - that they leap to the opposite extreme, reducing life to blind selfish genes or the universe to bleak meaninglessness. But many atheists - even among the best known and most militant - have also had powerful feelings towards nature and the universe: feelings of reverence, love, awe and sense of belonging to nature and the material universe. Below on this page you will find quotes that show these feelings very clearly, from Hume, d'Holbach, la Mettrie, Shelley, and Sagan. They are so close to the feelings that believers have towards their deities, that they may be called religious. This is exactly the position of scientific pantheism.

    86. Who Is An Atheist? Agnostic? Theist? - Some Definitions
This is just one example of a theist incorrectly defining atheism. atheism isnot a system (ferocious or otherwise), it says nothing about what is above us,

(also some thoughts on theism and agnosticism) The thoughts expressed below are mine. I haven't directly used any material as a source in writing this definitional essay although I should give credit to George Smith and the paper "Freethought Today" for the insights they provided when I read them over a year before writing this. I'm sure there are other sources that I have read in the past which have influenced the thoughts below, but they don't come to mind at the moment. Some of the most poorly understood words are: theism atheism , and agnosticism . In the following paragraphs, I will attempt to provide a definitional framework for the three words. I'm confident that many people who read this will still choose to define the words differently than I. The purpose of the definitions is not to establish some sort of absolute truth but to provide a working definition that at least I can point to and say, "this is what I think the definition is, and this is how I use these words". If you find the definitions useful, feel free to 'label' yourself using them and direct anyone to this site who doesn't know why you call yourself by one (or more) of these terms. Perhaps the biggest reason the above words are misunderstood is that theists tend to define atheism, atheists tend to define theism, and

    http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/rossuk/c-athism.htm
The Unreasonableness of Atheism and other barriers to belief
Heb 11:6 And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him. Love never works coercively, it only works persuasively. The unreasonableness of Atheism: If the definition of an atheist is: someone who believes that there is NO God . Then we can ask 'how does he know?' In order to know that there is no God he must know all that there is to know. And therefore he would be God. But we know that an atheist is just like us, a man with imperfect knowledge. However in claiming to be an atheist he is setting himself up, instead of God, as a kind of mini-god, since he claims that there is no God but is making himself to be a god with all knowledge. This is unreasonable. However in practise there might be other emotional rather than logical reasons why a person chooses atheism. Disillusion with established religion, the problem of evil, personal tragedy, fear, personal comfort and pleasure etc. A much more reasonable position is that of the agnostic who claims that he does not know whether there is a God and is open to the evidence.

Make it known on the Discussion Forum If there is anything as misunderstood and misrepresented as atheism, it must be agnosticism. There are many misconceptions about agnosticism, agnostics, and the reasons why anyone would adopt a position of agnosticism in the first place. This is unfortunate, because whether agnosticism is conceived of as a philosophy or simply an isolated position on the existence of gods, it is eminently reasonable and defensible. The definition of agnosticism is one of the more contentious issues - even many agnostics continue to hold to the idea that agnosticism represents some sort of "third way" between atheism and theism. Not only evidence from standard dictionaries but also a careful comparison between agnosticism and other ideas like theism and atheism reveal that calling oneself an agnostic by no mean excludes being either an atheist or a theist.

    The Philosophy of Atheism
    by Emma Goldman
First published in February 1916 in the Mother Earth journal. To give an adequate exposition of the Philosophy of Atheism, it would be necessary to go into the historical changes of the belief in a Deity, from its earliest beginning to the present day. But that is not within the scope of the present paper. However, it is not out of place to mention, in passing, that the concept God, Supernatural Power, Spirit, Deity, or in whatever other term the essence of Theism may have found expression, has become more indefinite and obscure in the course of time and progress. In other words, the God idea is growing more impersonal and nebulous in- proportion as the human mind is learning to understand natural phenomena and in the degree that science pro- gressively correlates human and social events. God, today, no longer represents the same forces as in the beginning of His existence; neither does He direct human destiny with the same Iron hand as of yore. Rather does the God idea express a sort of spiritualistic stimalus to satisfy the fads and fancies of every shade of human weak- ness. In the course of human development the God idea has been forced to adapt itself to every phase of human affairs, which is perfectly consistent with the origin of the idea itself. The conception of gods originated in fear and curiosity. Primitive man, unable to understand the phenomena of nature and harassed by them, saw in every terrifying manifestation some sinister force expressly directed against him; and as ignorance and fear are the parents of all super- stition, the troubled fancy of primitive man wove the God idea.

One of the more dramatic debating maneuver used by Christian apologists against atheists is to argue that atheists can provide no objective reason for not raping people. This startling claim follows from the apologists' wider claim that atheists can provide no objective moral reasons for anything. In this paper I will examine both claims in context of the debate between atheism and theism. I will maintain first that the theists' assume without good argument that an atheistic morality must be subjective. Second, I will argue that the theistic position on rape does not escape a special case of the Euthyphro dilemma:[ ] Does God disapprove of rape because it is bad or is rape bad because God disapproves of it? On the first interpretation of the dilemma theists can provide objective reasons for not raping, but so can atheists. On the second interpretation, theists can provide no objective reasons for not raping so that if atheists cannot, they are no worse off than theists. To be sure, some theists attempt to escape from the dilemma by appealing to God's character. But I will argue that they do not succeed and in fact beg the question against atheists. Finally, I will maintain that the Biblical view of rape should not be our moral guide: Not only does the Bible seem to condone rape on certain occasions but its attitude toward female victims of rape is insensitive and chauvinistic.

Inasmuch as the concept of God generally represents the dominant forms of consciousness of an age, atheism is historically associated with political radicalism. (See also Monotheism Theism Deism Agnosticism and Pantheism The ancient philosophers listed above speculated that phenomena had natural causes, in opposition to animist or other religious or teleological beliefs. This kind of atheism was necessarily naïve and speculative as they did not have a sufficient basis of empirical knowledge to develop a consistently atheistic view. The Middle Ages in Europe were dominated by the Church and atheism made little progress, while in China atheism experienced a series of setbacks and forward steps, where no church ever gained a serious foothold. Progressive social currents tended to attack the legitimacy of the Church in Europe or to restrict the relevance of Church doctrine, unable to reject the existence of God outright. Meanwhile, in the Middle East, the golden age of Islam embraced questioning and all forms of scientific pursuit, thus Islam never faced a direct philosophical assault. Atheists Unfriendly to Homeschooling
This Comment First Appeared in a private forum: I often wonder why it is that atheists, who have managed to wrest their minds fairly free from religion, are so often not among those who seek to be free of authority in other realms, such as health, parenting, learning and privacy. Why is it that we can so easily see the importance of being free from government in matters of faith, and yet are willing to be told what to think and do in other areas of our lives? What will it take for us to understand how important it is to have these other freedoms? Will it take having the tables turned on us, so that one or two new wrong minded Supreme Court justices manage to reshape public schools in ways we don't like?
