Discovering the Gods Freyja/Freo Article Thor/Thunor Article Wes hal and welcome to the Heathen/Asatru website of Shawn and Carrie Rowland. On these ever-growing pages you will find our thoughts and understandings of the spiritual path developed by our pre-Christian, and pre-Islamic ancestors. Our religion, in its many regional, familial, and ideological forms is the natural faith of the Germanic peoples. The Germanic peoples now-a-days make up those who can trace their lineage back to the English, French, Germans, Dutch, Lombards, Swedes, Norwegians, Icelanders, and other assorted folks like some of the non-Celtic Irish, Belgians, and Austrians.
Our people are by nature tolerant of other beliefs, and leave such choices always up to the individual as opposed to the peer-pressure and fear tactics often found amongst Christianity and Islam. However, it is a general belief that the naturally developed faith of your ancestors and your culture is the one best suited for you. Heathens then, adhere to the ethics, practices, and beliefs developed by their Northern European folk. This religion, though similar to Japanese Shinto, African Voudun, Indian Dharma, Celtic Druidism, and other ethnocentric faiths, is unique to the Germanic experience just as those other faiths are unique to the experiences of their respective peoples.

124. Asatru
asatru has been based on the surviving historical record; asatru or Ásatrú is an Icelandic word, a translation of the Danish word Asetro.
http://www.magickalmeltingpot.com/Asatru
Asatru Asatru is regarded as one of the Neo-Pagan religions. That includes Wicca, Celtic Druidism, and other ancient Pagan religions. However, many Asatruers prefer the term "Heathen" to "Neopagan" and look upon their tradition as "not just a branch on the Neopagan tree" but as a different tree. Asatru has been based on the surviving historical record; it has been maintained as closely as possible to the original religion of the Norse people.
Asatru or Ásatrú is an Icelandic word, a translation of the Danish word Asetro. The latter was coined by scholars in the mid-19th century. It was intended to mean belief in the Asir, the Gods. In Scandinavia the religion is called Forn Siðr (which means the Ancient way), Forn sed (the Old custom), Nordisk sed (Nordic custom), or Hedensk sed (Pagan custom).
Asatru Beliefs:
Asatru is a polytheistic religion. There are three races of Deities in the Norse pantheon. They are all regarded as living beings who are involved in human life:
The Aesir: These are the Gods of the tribe or clan, representing Kingship, order, craft, etc.

"If, therefore, from the settlement of the Saxons to the introduction of Christianity among them, that system of religion could not be a part of the common law, because they were not yet Christians, and if, having their laws from that period to the close of the common law, we are all able to find among them no such act of adoption, we may safely affirm (though contradicted by all the judges and writers on earth) that Christianity neither is, nor ever was a part of the common law." What is Asatru? Trying to define Asatru can be rather like trying to nail jelly to a tree - whenever one is
convinced it has stuck it finds a way around the nail to land once more at your feet. The word
itself is easy enough - it was invented by Scandinavian antiquarians in the 1830's to describe the
ethical and religious leanings of their forebearers. Literally it means "True to the Aesir", one of
the families of gods and goddesses worshipped by the Vikings. But the concepts go back much
farther, and are indeed much broader than medieval Scandinavia. Five thousand of years ago a people known as the Indo-Europeans swept out of central Asia
across steppe and sea in a wave of conquest, trade and exploration.. Asatru is essentially their
cultural legacy, now worldwide, wherever their descendants roamed. Scandinavia is simply the
last place this culture existed in it's purest form, untouched by the influx of Semitic and Oriental
religion and culture. Asatru is a tribal or folk religion. As such, it shares much with other tribal traditions, including
those of the Native Americans. However, unlike nearly every other tribal religion, Asatru has a

Yes, these pages are still here. And I've finally found some time to work on them again. To wit, I will finally finish the "Why" page before I move on to my journal, and I found all of the interesting tidbits I saved off of alt.religion.asatru before the newsgroup got flooded by a bunch of spammers and trolls. I'm also starting to write political commentary, and I will have links up to that soon (or at least in less than two years).

page is on-line. Feedback page is on-line. I'm still working on content for my journal page; and I have to add some bad news. All of the Usenet posts I had saved over the years have been lost. This includes Rorik's Recommended Reading List, as well as some insightful and interesting posts from a.r.a regulars (pre-spammer attack) like Dirk Buere, Manny Olds, Steelfoot, and many others. The good news is that I may have hard copies of some of it - when I began my journey into Asatru, I printed everything interesting out and began filling a series of large 3-ring binders (and I do mean LARGE). However, I won't be able to get any of this stuff out and begin transcribing until after I move in mid-May. And I might, might have a journal entry ready sometime next week. I don't think it will be popular or pleasant, though.

http://www.gladsheim.org/whatis.html
What is Asatru? Asatru is the modern rebirth of the pre-Christian indigenous faith of the Norse peoples the ancestors of the Norwegians, Danes, Swedes, and Icelanders. This faith honored many Gods and Goddesses, some of whose names are still familiar to us today, such as Thor, Odin and Freyja. The indigenous faith of Scandinavia, upon which Asatru is based, fell into shadow after the year 1100, with the advent of Christianity in Northern Europe. The modern Asatru faith practiced by Gladsheim is part of a revival which began in 1973, when the Asatru Free Assembly was founded in the United States. The same year, Asatru was granted official recognition in Iceland, becoming the second recognized faith in that country, along side the Lutheran Church.
Asatru is one branch of the Teutonic family of beliefs, which includes the pre-Christian faiths not only of the Scandinavian peoples, but also the Anglo-Saxons who founded England, and the ancient German tribes such as the Goths, Franks, and Alemanni. Before they were converted to the Roman Church between the years 450 and 1100, all of these nations worshipped the same two families of Gods and Goddesses, known to the Norse as the Æsir and Vanir.
Asatru is an independent faith. Its tenets are belief in the Æsir and Vanir; the exchange of gifts with the Gods and one's kinfolk, and living one's life in accordance with Nine Virtues of Asatru. The Havamal, also referred to as "The Words of Odin", has several translations, and are words of wisdom, to help guide one in their daily life. Asatru has no ties to any Judeo-Christian religion, nor is it a part of any New Age or "neo-Pagan" belief system, including Wicca.

Who are we?
The Vingolf Fellowship is an Asatru organization dedicated to the worship of the Aesir and Vanir, the Norse Gods and Goddesses.  We currently number eight men and women, most of whom reside in New Jersey (with New York and Massachusetts residents as well).  We gather at least once a month to honor our deities and the Earth, and do everything from brewing to seidh-working.  We also hold open rituals, and workshops at the major pagan festivals in the area.
What is Asatru?
There are as many answers to that question as there are Asatruar. Asatru is a polytheistic religion based strongly on the pre-Christian beliefs of the Scandanavian peoples, including the Vikings.  It is currently a state religion in Iceland.  Asatruar honor all of the Norse deities (the most well-known of which are Odin, Freya, Thor and Frigga), and have a code of ethics based on the virtues of our spiritual predecessors. Asatruar hold the Earth, and all spirits of land and sea, to be sacred, and many of us honor our own ancestor spirits as well, regardless of our own heritage.   We use what archeological, anthropological and literary evidence to reconstruct Asatru as best we can, and we fill in the rest with deep personal insight, making Asatru a living, changing religion with strong roots in the past. Rituals of Asatru

The blot is a common Asatru ritual, and the term "blot" comes from a Norse word for "sacrifice". It's pronounced "bloat". The purpose of the blot is to share an offering to the Gods. Though animal sacrifices were done in the past, it's traditional these days to use mead (if mead is not available, then juice or beer would suffice). The ritual itself is a simple one, and is often part of a larger rite. It usually consists of 3 parts: the offering is dedicated to the Deities, it is shared amongst those present for the blot, then the remaining offering is poured out onto the ground. These are the basic elements, but the blot is usually more of a ceremony:
