The Amish are famous for shunning technology. But their secret love affair with the cell phone is causing an uproar.
By Howard Rheingold Technology is my native tongue. I'm online six hours a day. I have a cell phone, voicemail, fax, laptop, and palmtop. I'm connected - and lately, I've been wondering where all this equipment is leading me. I've found myself asking a question that's both disquieting and intriguing: What kind of person am I becoming as a result of all this stuff? Of course, I'm not the only one asking. And a while ago it occurred to me that, in addition to measuring my reactions against those of others in comparable circumstances, I might learn something entirely new by looking at a civilization of which I am not a member. The Amish communities of Pennsylvania, despite the retro image of horse-drawn buggies and straw hats, have long been engaged in a productive debate about the consequences of technology. So I turned to them for a glimpse of the future. Last summer, armed with these questions and in the company of an acquaintance with Amish contacts, I traveled around the countryside of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Everywhere, there were freshly planted fields, farmhouses with handsome, immaculate barns and outbuildings. At one farm we passed, a woman was sitting a hundred yards from her house on the edge of a kitchen garden. She wore the traditional garb of the conservative Old Order - a long, unadorned dress sheathed by an apron, her hair covered by a prayer bonnet. She was sitting in the middle of the garden, alone, the very image of technology-free simplicity. But she was holding her hand up to her ear. She appeared to be intent on something, strangely engaged.

A picture from our kitchen window! Amish Links No, I am not Amish. If I were, I wouldn't be on the internet! Because the Amish try to keep apart from the rest of the world, there isn't much decent information on the net. In fact, there are more "joke" sites about the Amish than even tourist sites! To remedy that a bit, I've listed a few decent links ( below ) and provided a brief introduction.
In the late 1500's, along with the more familiar reformation movements such as the Lutherans and the Calvinists, there was a more "radical" movement known as the Anabaptists. As the name suggests, they believed that baptism should come in early adulthood, when one is capable of making a meaningful confession of faith. In addition, they believed in complete separation of the church from affairs of the state, and refused to serve in the military. These beliefs led to considerable persecution.
The Mennonites are a branch of the Anabaptists which began with the teachings of Menno Simons in Holland. Persecution led them to migrate to Switzerland and other areas. There are millions of Mennonites today, spread throughout the world.
In the late 1600's, a group of believers in Alsace, led by Jacob Ammon, split from the mainstream of Mennonites on the basis of a disagreement concerning the practice of avoidance, better known as shunning: If someone persists in deviating from Biblical rules, his community must avoid all contact with him. This practice remains a part of Amish life today.

They are different from other people because they like to be their own person, not like someone else. They shun the advances of the modern world like, televisions, radios, VCRs, and cars. Their agriculture was very important to them because it kept the family together. It kept the family together because they all worked together.
In our research we came across a very interesting Amish person: Raymond the Amish Comic. He was nice enough to let us interview him. At the last minute, we found an interesting article on the Amish and their views on technology. Click here to read what we found out about the Amish and Modern Technology!

Amish
Driving the back roads of the North Country, one is likely to encounter the horse-drawn black buggies of the Amish residents. The Old Order Amish, descendants of the radical Anabaptist Reformation, first came to the area in 1974 in search of available farmland. St. Lawrence County is now home to three Amish communities. In the Norfolk area one finds, for the most part, descendants of the Swiss Amish who settled the Allen County area of Indiana. In the Heuvelton-Depeyester areas are Amish whose ancestors were among the early settlers of Ohio. These communities illustrate how diverse the Amish are in the 21st century, for they differ in a variety of ways, including the German dialect they speak at home, the style of clothing they wear, the approved haircut for boys, and the type of buggy they drive. In the Norfolk area, for example, the Amish use the orange "slow moving vehicle" triangle, while those in the Heuvelton-DePeyster area rely on strips of gray reflecting tape. The church is central to all Amish communities. Each Amish church is distinct and self-defined, separate from not only the "English" or non-Amish community that surrounds it but from most other Amish church-communities as well. For the Amish, strength of the community, guided by the wisdom of the church, is the key to a life worthy of salvation.
