**This page has not been updated since March, 2002.** The Amish by Lee Zook
The Amish and the World Wide Web ! What a peculiar combination, old-fashioned quiet people and the most recent and as yet ungoverned, communication device. But there is an objective behind the aberration. The purpose of the page is:
  • to educate the general public about this particular ethnic group.
  • to provide information to local officials, business people and others who have contact with the Amish, particularly if these contacts began in the recent past.
  • to bring together in one site selected material found on the Web pertaining to the Amish.
  • to highlight the positive influences of diverse ethnic groups in our country. Lee Zook and Kyle White have worked with a variety of Amish groups when they had conflicts with their neighbors. Often these conflicts occur because the Amish avoid many of the modern conveniences and technologies that most post-modern people take for granted. They do so because of their religious beliefs and their tradition. These two items, religious beliefs and traditions, are so tightly interwoven that it is difficult to separate one from the other. As in many religions, for the Amish, belief to some extent flows from tradition.
When confronted with some law or regulation that does not fit their religious belief, Amish sometimes ignore the law. In some cases, these conflicts escalate until Amish find themselves in court defending their actions. Often court cases have been argued using the basic tenants of the

"Early morning milking" - Elizabeth Randy Before dawn, I snuck into the loft of the barn so I could watch Nathaniel from afar. I saw him there as he milked the cows. Grasping each utter with his strong hands, Nathaniel teased each utter with the greatest care to ensure all the milk reached his pail. The cows hesitantly mooed as if they savored his gentle touch with every ounce of their being. "Oh" I thought to myself. "If only I were as lucky as those cows. If only he would squeeze my breasts and milk me." Not hot enough for you? How about this...

This Amish girl suffers from a genetic disorder. (Photo: CBS)
"I don't think the Amish really understand that it's a genetic disorder that causes the handicapping condition."
Iva Byler, mother of three sick sisters
(CBS) It doesn’t get much more peaceful than the simple life among the Amish in rural Ohio. They have no cars, no electricity, no televisions. But their children have medical conditions so rare, doctors don’t have names for them yet, reports correspondent Vicki Mabrey The Amish make up only about 10 percent of the population in Geagua County in Ohio, but they’re half of the special needs cases. Three of the five Miller children, for example, have a mysterious crippling disease that has no name and no known cure. Their father, Bob Miller, says he realizes there is a crisis in the community, which is why he and two other fathers, Erwin Kuhns and Robert Hershberger, have agreed to break a strict Amish rule that forbids them to appear on camera. The three sat for an informal interview.

    113. Leonard Gross Background Dynamics Of Amish Movement
Scholarly article by Leonard Gross on the history of the amish.
    http://www.goshen.edu/facultypubs/GROSS.html
Background Dynamics of the Amish Movement:
Pivotal Individuals within the Swiss Brethren Division of the 1690s; and The Question of Reformed (Calvinist) Influence by Leonard Gross What I hope to do first in this essay is to describe in a nutshell, from one Old Order Amish minister's point of view, what it means to be Amish, both in spirit and in substance. I then hope, secondly, to trace, within the tides of history, the sources of the Amish faith and life. And thirdly, I would like to hint at some of the developments, from the 1690s or so, up to around 1720, where I attempt to weigh the significance of some of the major leaders who helped determine the outcomes of the great Swiss Brethren Division of the 1690s. (And indeed, it was the great Swiss Brethren and not only an Amish Division!) Here is a quick overview of my findings: Certain Low Country Mennonite doctrines from the era of Menno Simons and Dirk Philips were picked up by certain Swiss Brethren Anabaptist groups, probably via the ongoing series of Anabaptist conferences held in the Strasbourg area. Certain of these doctrines slowly found acceptance especially among some Alsatian Swiss Brethren. These very doctrines were then formally promoted through the publication of Menno Simons' Fundamentbuch Foundation Book ) in 1575, and of the Dordrecht Confession in 1664 (both publications issued in German translation). Some Swiss Brethren accepted these new doctrines; other Swiss Brethren rejected these new doctrines, believing them to clash with traditional Swiss Brethren views on the nature of the church, on the nature of congregational discipline, and on the nature of leadership and authority within the church.

    117. Wer Sind Die Amish…
Ein Artikel der kurz auf die Geschichte und die Glaubenseinstellungen eingeht.
    http://www.neohiotravel.com/myweb/German/amishg.html
    Wer Sind Die Amish…
  • geschichtlich gesehen ?

Maryalice Yakutchik takes a personal journey through amish country.
    http://dsc.discovery.com/anthology/unsolvedhistory/yourhistory/amish/amish.html
    September 07, 2005 EDT
Maryalice Yakutchik lives a week among an Old Order Amish family. Follow her journey as she finds out what life is really like among the Amish.
    Day 1: Meeting Esther

Some Amish would contend it's downright impossible to get to know Esther if you're not one of the Old Order Amish. Maryalice dosen't necessarily buy that. Day 2: "Slow Time"
The Amish live according to the sun. And clearly, they live for Sunday. But is it a day of rest? Day 3: Bloom Where You're Planted
The family begin making plans to move as they feel the squeeze of busy roads and electric lines they do not want or need. Day 4: A Stitch in Time
Maryalice crashes a quilting party. But how will she explain she is writing a story for Discovery.com when the computer is verboten among her hosts? Day 5: Teach Your Children Well
How do you get a new born calf to breath? Maryalice finds out. Day 6: "The Hurrieder I Go, the Behinder I Get."
It's a mish-mosh of activities that begins at 5 a.m. and lasts until 10 p.m. ST (Slow Time). Maryalice gets the total Amish farm experience. Day 7: Goofy Time
What do the "summer of love" and a victory parade for sailors have in common? Trival Pursuit the Amish way.
